The Higher Education Bubble
America is facing a higher education bubble. Like the housing bubble, it is the product of cheap credit coupled with popular expectations of ever-increasing returns on investment, and as with housing prices, the cheap credit has caused college tuitions to vastly outpace inflation and family incomes. Now this bubble is bursting. Learn more at: www.encounterbooks.com

Why Is Higher Education So Expensive?
It's no secret that US college tuition costs are rising dramatically, and the high cost of a college education burdens young people and their families. How can we make college more affordable? Many suggest that the best way to keep tuition affordable is by increasing government assistance through student loans, grants, and tax credits for education. Professor Daniel Lin shows that doing so will actually lead to higher college costs, because loans/grants/tax credits are directly related to the increasing cost of education. Before we can find any solution, it is important to understand the root cause of the rising prices. Professor Lin finds that increased demand—fueled by improved job prospects for graduates and increased government assistance—is to blame for soaring tuition prices. Knowing the cause should inform our search for a solution.

Is a college degree worth the cost? You decide.
President Obama promotes the myth that everyone must go to college. That if you don't go, your life will be ruined -- that you will end up waiting tables, or trapped in some other mundane occupation. The truth is, even with a college degree, you may still end up waiting tables, you'll just begin your "career" four or five years later, tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Here is an example of some of the plumb jobs college grads were able to land during the Obama administration. Not just liberal arts majors mind you, but graduates with degrees in mathematics, robotics, neuroscience, engineering, accounting, business administration, economics, biology, communications, graphic design, marketing, and linguistics. Of course when it comes to education, it's not just the Obama administration that deserves a failing grade. For years, politicians of both parties have pandered to students by promising more aid in the form of direct or subsidized student loans. As a result, colleges and universities are freed from competitive forces that would otherwise keep tuition low. Easy access to cheap credit enables students to bid up tuition, benefiting the educational establishment at their expense. Politicians secure student's votes by promising relief from skyrocketing tuition by providing even more loans. Ironically, the loans themselves are the very reason tuition is so high in the first place. Before the Federal Government got involved, college degrees were much more affordable, and ...

Why I Hate School But Love Education||Spoken Word
As the cyclical and seemingly never ending debate about education rages on, the topic - somewhat ironically, often poses more questions than it provides answers. But what is the value of mainstream schooling? Why is it that some of the most high profile and successful figures within the Western world openly admit to never having completed any form of higher learning? Paying homage to Jefferson Bethke's "Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus", a piece that received 22 million views in the space of a week, I address a number of these issues in my offering "Why I Hate School, but Love Education". With scores of school leavers wanting to further their education with no guarantee of their dream job at the end of it, we should ask ourselves whether qualifications still hold the same value now as they did in previous years? Does success in the school system correlate to success in life? Or is the school system simply geared towards fact retention and regurgitation? What is true education? @sulibreaks universityofsulibreaks.tumblr.com Director: @KevinNgongo www.youtube.com/kevinngongo Graphics: www.mikegallardodesigns.com Music: Sunshine: Surface Of The Sun - John Murphy - Adagio in D Minor

Education For Whom and For What?
Noam Chomsky, a world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist, spoke at the University of Arizona on Feb. 8, 2012. His lecture, "Education: For Whom and For What?" featured a talk on the state of higher education, followed by a question-and-answer session. Chomsky, an Institute Professor and a Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he worked for more than 50 years, has been concerned with a range of education-related issues in recent years. Among them: How do we characterize the contemporary state of the American education system? What happens to the quality of education when public universities become more privatized? Are public universities in danger of being converted into facilities that produce graduates-as-commodities for the job market? What is the role of activism in education? With unprecedented tuition increases and budget struggles occurring across American campuses, these are questions that are more relevant than ever.

Investing in fair student loans
More than 10 years ago, Shamengo pioneer Felipe Vergara conceived of an investment fund in Chile that would help students, many the first in their families to pursue higher education, to attend university. Students would pay back loans gradually based on their post-graduation salaries. The program has enabled students to successfully complete their studies and find employment, while the investors who bet on their success have seen solid returns. Want to join our community and hear more about the adventures of our pioneers? Subscribe to our YouTube channel & uploads to get a peek of every new Shamengo pioneer as soon as they appear!
