Scientific Explanation 1 - The Deductive-Nomological Model
It is often thought that science doesn't merely describe and predict what happens in the world, it also gives us explanations of why things happen. What is a scientific explanation? This video outlines the deductive-nomological model of explanation, proposed by Carl Hempel, which claims that to explain X is to show how X can be derived from statements of laws of nature plus initial conditions.

Scientific Explanation 2 - Objections to the DN Model
As we have seen previously, the DN model requires that scientific explanations appeal to laws of nature. However, most sciences don't seem to be based on universal laws in the way that physics is. I first examine Hempel's attempt to modify the DN model so as to accommodate explanations without universal laws. Next, I outline some important objections to the DN model.
