The principal route, the single track North-South Railway running between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, accounts for 1,726 kilometres (1,072 mi) of the network's total length of 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi). The national railway network uses mainly metre gauge, although there are several standard gauge and mixed gauge lines in the North of the country. The first railways in Vietnam were established in the 1880s; these included a tram running between the ports of Saigon and Cholon, and a regional rail line connecting Saigon with Mỹ Tho. Railway construction flourished soon afterwards, during the administration of Paul Doumer as Governor-General of French Indochina from 1897 to 1902. It was during this time that construction of the Yunnan--Vietnam and North--South railways began. Construction of the North-South line took over thirty years, finally beginning operation in 1936, during which time other branch lines were also completed. Beginning in World War II, the entire rail network became a target of bombing attacks by a number of groups, including both North Vietnamese and South Vietnamese troops during the Vietnam War. Although the main lines—particularly the North--South line—were quickly restored and returned to service once conflict ended, many branch lines were abandoned and dismantled at their expense, their infrastructure used to replace damaged sections of the main lines, or sold as scrap. With increased economic growth brought on by the Doi Moi reforms of the late 1980s, the railway system has entered a renewed phase of development.... A high-speed rail link between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has also been proposed, which would reduce journey length from 30 hours to around 6 hours... Throughout the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese railway network—especially the North--South Railway—was a target of bombardments and sabotage by both North Vietnamese and South Vietnamese forces. In the South, American aid allowed the South Vietnamese government to reconstruct the main line between Saigon and Huế, and several branch lines were also completed. As reconstruction efforts advanced, however, bombardments and sabotage of the railways by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese intensified, reducing the transportation capacity and effectiveness of the railway, and eventually forcing the abandonment of many large sections of the track. In 1964, Typhoons Joan and Iris, the worst to strike Vietnam in sixty-five years, damaged the railway system even further, restricting operations to five separated segments. A second reconstruction effort, assisted again by the U.S. government, began in December 1966, and progressed in those areas where security was re-established. The system reopened 340 kilometers of main line in areas where security was restored. In North Vietnam, American bombing of railways was concentrated on key targets such as bridges, both along the North--South Railway and along the lines north of Hanoi, such as the Hanoi--Lào Cai and Hanoi--Dong Dang lines... Operation Rolling Thunder was the first large-scale bombing campaign carried out by the U.S. Air Force, taking place from March 2, 1965 until November 1, 1968, when US President Lyndon B. Johnson temporarily called off air raids. Large-scale air raids resumed from May 9 to October 23, 1972, for Operation Linebacker, and again from December 18--29, 1972, for Operation Linebacker II, with fewer target restrictions than Rolling Thunder. Railway engineering troops from the People's Republic of China, deployed in late June 1965, were tasked with repairing the damage caused by the bombing... A particularly difficult target for U.S. Air Force bombers was the Thanh Hóa Bridge, a well-defended combined road/rail bridge... The bridge was eventually destroyed by laser-guided smart bombs during separate raids on April 27 and May 13, 1972, as part of Operation Linebacker. After the Fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975, the Communist government of the newly unified Vietnam took control of the former South Vietnamese railway. The heavily damaged, war-torn North--South line was restored and returned to service on 31 December 1976, promoted as a symbol of Vietnamese unity...

CHINA - THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road is the world's oldest, and most historically important overland trade route. For over 2000 years, traders and merchants travelled the deserts of central Asia exchanging goods between the Chinese empire and the rest of the world. As a result, the oases of the desert sprang up into dynamic cities. A vast network of interconnected caravan routes that stretched for over 6,500 klm enabled the exchange of products and ideas between China and the rest of the world. The Silk Road began around 329 BCE, when Alexander the Great conquered the entire known world and promoted trade to the east and got its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade along it. Though silk was certainly the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded, and various technologies, religions and philosophies. The great story of the Silk Road is that Buddhism travelled on it, from India. The dry climate has preserved many ruins, while many ethnic groups make their home in this part of China. The Ancient Silk Road started at Xian and then it reached Dunhuang, where it divided into three, the Southern, Central and the Northern Route. The pictures in this video start in Xian and cover the northern route. Xian is one of the oldest cities of China with more than 3,100 years of history. It is home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The terracotta warriors, is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210--209 BC and whose purpose was to protect him in his afterlife. Lanzhou is the next stop. 100km SE on the Yellow River, are the Bingling Temple Caves. The first begun around 420 CE at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty. Work continued and more grottoes were added during the Wei, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Their inaccessibility spared them from destruction during the Cultural Revolution, while an 80-foot Buddha is carved into the cliff. Dunhuang is located between the Taklamakan desert and Gobi desert. Taklamakan is the world's second largest shifting sand desert after Sahara. The Mogao caves, also called Thousand Buddha caves (the first was carved in 366AD) have the best Buddhist murals in the world. In Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region, China's largest province with only 20 million inhabitants, we visit Turpan, Urumqi and Kashgar. Turpan's, "Flaming Mountains", the hottest place in China, overshadow the cradle of the Turpan ancient civilization and oasis agriculture. Here we see the Gaochang city ruins, the former Uyghur capital (1st c BC) and the ancient Buddhist city of GaoHe Kerez (2nd c. BC). Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and once an important station on the Silk Road, famous for being a major city furthest from any ocean. Kashgar, or Kashi, is a city with a history of more than 2,000 years. It was historically considered as the gateway and hub for the transfer of goods from China to Central Asia and Europe along the ancient Silk Road. Kashgar preserves the most complete Uygur culture, art and architecture with over 90 percent of the residents being Uygur people and is famous for its bazaar and animal market. Starting in Beijing, The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, to protect the Chinese Empire against the enemies, while its border controls allowed the imposition of duties of goods transported along the Silk Road. The entire wall with all its branches measure 21,000 klm. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC. Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political center of the country and is renowned for its palaces, temples, gardens, tombs, walls gates and art treasures. The Dong-Feng 21 (DF-21; NATO reporting name CSS-5 - Dong-Feng (Chinese: 東風; literally "East Wind") is a two-stage, solid-propellant, single-warhead medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) in the Dong Feng series developed by China Changfeng Mechanics and Electronics Technology Academy. Development started in the late 1960s and was completed around 1985-86, but it was not deployed until 1991. It was developed from the submarine-launched JL-1 missile, and is China's first solid-fuel land-based missile. The U.S. Department of Defense in 2008 estimated that China had 60-80 missiles and 60 launchers.[7] Originally developed as a strategic weapon, the DF-21's later variants were designed for both nuclear and conventional missions. As well as a nuclear warhead of around 300 kt, it is thought that high explosive, submunition and chemical warheads are available. The latest DF-21D was said to be the world's first anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM). The DF-21 has also been developed into a space-capable anti-satellite/anti-missile weapon carrier. The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military arm of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the de facto armed forces of the People's Republic of China, consisting of land, sea, strategic missile and air forces. Initially called the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army, the PLA was established on August 1, 1927 which is celebrated annually as "PLA Day". The People's Liberation Army's insignia consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for "Eight One", referring to August 1 (Chinese: 八一), the date of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising. The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,250,000 personnel (about 0.18% of the country's population). The PLA comprises five main service branches, consisting of the PLA Ground Force, PLA Navy (PLAN), PLA Air Force (PLAAF), Second Artillery Corps (strategic missile force), and the PLA Reserve Force. Military service is compulsory, in theory, for all men who attain the age of 18; women may register for duty in the medical, veterinary, and other technical services at ages as young as 14. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[14] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau).[15] The PRC also claims Taiwan -- which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity -- as its 23rd province, a claim controversial due to the complex political status of Taiwan and the unresolved Chinese Civil War.[16] The United States Armed Forces[N 1] are the military forces of the United States of America. They consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.[6] The U.S. has a strong tradition of civilian control of the military. The President of the United States is the military's overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. The DoD is headed by the Secretary of Defense, who is a civilian and Cabinet member. The Defense Secretary is second in the military's chain of command, just below the President, and serves as the principal assistant to the President in all DoD-related matters.[7] To coordinate military action with diplomacy, the President has an advisory National Security Council headed by a National Security Advisor. Both the President and Secretary of Defense are advised by a seven-member Joint Chiefs of Staff, which includes the head of each of the Defense Department's service branches as well as the chief of the National Guard Bureau. Leadership is provided by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[8] The Commandant of the Coast Guard is not a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.) or America, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district.
