West Hampstead to St Johns Wood and Highgate
It was physically impossible to park in 99% of Camden I drove through, and had to rely on traffic lights and inventiveness to film anything at all, then I crossed into Haringey and had an almost free run. Same roads, one didn't need resident's parking, and neither did the other which has it. Camden are the true fascists of Greater London boroughs and this showed them up at their worst, following the previous exposure of their previously free car park charges, which are almost empty now as a result.

The Doll Lab
(PRODUCER'S CUT)
A weekend project. They gave me the music and with no budget, no time, and no resources I was promptly asked by a producer at a record label to come up with something. He gave me a new artist (Bee-Bop) and three of her tracks to mashup, and my friends (most of whom have never done anything in video before) ran into the woods in 30F-40F foggy weather and came up with this on the spot without even a damn script lol. It was a very fun, challenging weekend. Although, they made me change much of my video, and then ended up discarding it afterward. I don't regret it because it was a good learning experience, made me tougher, and I got to spend wondering bonding time with my friends.
On our way out of town I picked up an old down feather sleeping bag and some kindergarten fingerpaint, hehe...
One of the most interesting things I did in the video was I had to direct the artist over skype from Seattle while she was in London. Very hard but great learning experience. :)

Sugar Jesus Colour Test - Canon 5d
Sugar Jesus Colour Test - Canon 5d
Last weekend I made a few videos for The Divine Secret in one big go and posted some shots I had over-coloured, a process I like to do to see how far I can push things before I edit them. Last Thursday I shot a video for Sugar Jesus and decided to do the same and put the test shots up for that too.
This video was a lot less planned and more impromptu, I'd had the idea a week or so ago and mentioned it to the band over email, as I knew I'd be filming them live that evening. I had an idea and suggested filming some scenes to go around the live video and here are some of the results.
NOTE: When I originally rendered this the video came out all glitched and weird, and not smooth. But as it turns out I actually like this strangeness and decided to leave it as it was and add the music. Strange it may be, but I think it's also kind of fun like this.
The song these scenes will be edited too is called Solarize and so I wanted to shoot lots of flaring shots into the sun. I shot all of this on Hampstead Heath between about 3pm and 5.30pm when the sun was starting to set to try to get some Magic Hour light. It was all essentially improved on the spot from various scene ideas I had had but thankfully due to the camera and the light it doesn't look too bad. Also since we're at a very high point, you have great views from Parliament Hill looking into London which lends itself well to some nice landscapes.
The premise will be that our bizarrely attired hero spots a pretty girl, has a brief chat before her aggressive older brother spirits here away. Our hero then trains to become big and tough and goes to see the girl at a Sugar Jesus gig, winning her heart and vanquishing the brother in the process. Of course our hero will also need to learn compassion along the way, hence feeding the ducks! I also grabbed singer Andrei, put a helmet on him and grabbed a quick to camera performance scene with him holding my arms and so the camera as he walked about.
We got a lot of strange looks, as you can imagine, and a few 'unbalanced' types following us muttering aggressively which was weird but we managed to avoid them!
I wanted to use my Glidecam on last weekends shoot and also on this one, whereas it hadn't come last weekend, it arrived on Wednesday, the day before we shot so I could have used it on this shoot, but, uh, I couldn't get it balanced so didn't! And they said it was meant to be easy...
I also wanted to use my Glidetrack but decided not to take it, which probably proved a smart move because we attracted less grief by looking like someone taking a photo than looking like a whole camera crew. Since it was mostly just me and our hero, Nick, for most the day, we could at least keep our profile lessened, well as much as you can with a guy in a robot costume and wrestling mask with glasses!
I shot on the 5d again, keeping to 100, 160, 320, 640 and 1250 ISO to get the cleanest image. The Fader ND was very useful again, even if it does have vignetting issues, in allowing me to get a well exposed image. I like how I can just turn it to get the right result.
The shots above are the h.264 originals and have, as ever, been overly colour corrected to test things out, see how well it holds up etc. I had wanted to do some slow motion really, but with the 5d firmware still not out that wasn't possible. The 7d would have come in useful here and now I'm looking at the new 550D as a B-camera for that reason.
I sold my Letus Extreme last week too, on Saturday in fact, after this and the weekend before's Divine Secret shoot. I really loved getting beautiful images out my Ex1 + Letus combo but I can get 90% of the way there, with better low light, tiny form factor and ease of use from the 5d which keeps it a winner in my book. Using the 5d, the natural light from the sunset and the Fader ND gave me lots of nice images without really having to do much else.
I shot in Neutral -4 -4 -2 profile and used the Canon 50mm f1.4 and 28mm f1.8 lenses. I had the 85mm f1.8 with me but didn't use it as I actually prefer a nice wide angle!
I used my Litepanels MicroPro again as a top light to light the night scenes, I like it as a combo w/the 5d as it's quick and easy and light and bright enough to give me what I need. I wish it could light further but there you go.

Nick Drake - In Hampstead
Here is a short film I made from video I shot on my camera in August 2004 in Hampstead London. The music is Nick Drake singing 'Place To Be' from his final album 'Pink Moon' The photos of Nick Drake were taken by Keith Morris in November 1971. Camden Council have changed the light fitting on the lamp at the bottom of the passage so i am glad I captured this with the same lamp as were there when Nick was photographed there.

Hampstead Heath: The Musical
A number of eccentric regulars from a well known North London park were stopped by a film maker and asked if they wanted to be in a musical. Many of them had never sung or danced before... Meet the pagans, swimmers, dog whisperers, kite fliers, artists, gay crusiers, jugglers, and weirdos of Hampstead Heath!
