  Genoa  /ˈdʒɛnoʊ.ə/ (Italian: Genova [ˈdʒɛːnova] ( listen); Genoese and Ligurian Zena [ˈzeːna]; Latin and, archaically, English Genua) is the capital of Liguria and the sixth largest city in Italy, with a population of 608,676 within its administrative limits on a land area of 243.6 km² (94 sq mi). The urban zone of Genoa extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of 718,896. The urban area of Genoa has a population of 800,709. In the metropolitan area live between 859,000 and 1.4 million or 1.5 million people. Genoa is one of Europe's largest cities on the Mediterranean Sea and the largest seaport in Italy.
  Genoa has been nicknamed la Superba ("the Superb one") due to its glorious past and impressive landmarks. Part of the old town of Genoa was inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006 (see below). The city's rich art, music, gastronomy, architecture and history, allowed it to become the 2004's European Capital of Culture. It is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.

  The Venetian Ghetto was the area of Venice in which Jews were compelled to live under the Venetian Republic. It is from its name in Italian ("ghetto"), that the English word "ghetto" is derived: in the Venetian language it was named "ghèto".
  The English term "ghetto" is an Italian loanword, which actually comes from the Venetian word "ghèto", slag, and was used in this sense in a reference to a foundry where slag was stored located on the same island as the area of Jewish confinement. An alternative etymology is from Italian borghetto, diminutive of borgo ‘borough’.
  The Ghetto is an area of the Cannaregio sestiere of Venice, divided into the Ghetto Nuovo ("New Ghetto"), and the adjacent Ghetto Vecchio ("Old Ghetto"). These names of the ghetto sections are misleading, as they refer to an older and newer site at the time of their use by the foundries: in terms of Jewish residence, the Ghetto Nuovo is actually older than the Ghetto Vecchio.

  Allan Corduner (born 2 April 1950) is an English actor.
  Corduner grew up in a secular Jewish home in North London with his mother, father and a younger brother. His mother had escaped to England from Nazi Germany with her family in 1938. His father was born in Helsinki, Finland of a Finnish mother and a Russian father of Sephardic Jewish ancestry, although his father's family later moved to Stockholm, Sweden. Corduner's parents, too, first settled in Stockholm, but the family moved to London when Corduner was one year old. Interest in arts and music was always encouraged at home, and Corduner's early ambition was to become either an orchestra conductor or a concert pianist. He attended University College School in Hampstead, London NW3. Although Corduner developed into a very skilled jazz and classical pianist, musical aspirations had taken second place by the time he went to study at Bristol University and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
  Corduner is a character actor who has worked extensively in theatre in London's West End and on Broadway, television as well as in film. He has also appeared in several BBC Radio 4 plays including The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and Insignificance. His voice is familiar to listeners of audio books such as The Book Thief. Recent TV appearances include Exile with John Simm, We'll Take Manhattan for BBC4, and ITV's Midsomer Murders. This summer Corduner will start filming Da Vinci's Demons playing Verrocchio.

  Anton Rodgers (born Anthony Rodgers; 10 January 1933 – 1 December 2007) was an English actor and occasional director. He performed on stage, in film and in television dramas and sitcoms.
  Rodgers was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, the son of Leonore (née Wood) and William Robert Rodgers. His early education was at Westminster School. Later he was educated at the Italia Conti Academy and LAMDA. He appeared on stage from the age of 14. He was well known for his television performances, specifically his long-running roles in the television sitcoms Fresh Fields in the 1980s and May to December from 1989 to 1994.
  However, he also had a long career as an actor on both stage and film, with his stage roles ranging from contemporary comedy and satirical farce to Restoration comedy, Ibsen, Shaw and Wilde and Peter Nichols. He appeared in films such as The Fourth Protocol (1987), The Day of the Jackal (1973) and Scrooge (1970) (in which he performed the Academy Award-nominated Best Original Song "Thank You Very Much"). He made his West End debut in a double bill of Harold Pinter's The Lover & The Collection at the Comedy Theatre in London, and in the same year played the Duke of Crowborough in the ITV drama series Downton Abbey. He also appeared in Kleist's The Prince of Homburg, playing the title role, at the Donmar Warehouse in London in 2010. He played the part of St. Josemaría Escrivá in the 2011 Roland Joffé film There Be Dragons. Also in 2011, Cox signed on to play a recurring role in the second season of the Martin Scorsese-produced HBO original series Boardwalk Empire as an Irish immigrant with ties to the IRA.

  Harewood was born and grew up in the Small Heath area of Birmingham, England, where he attended St. Benedict's Junior School and Washwood Heath Comprehensive School. He is very well known for his television appearances on The Vice and Fat Friends and for his movie roles in Blood Diamond and The Merchant of Venice.   Fisher was born in Glasgow and following the death of his parents was brought up in Edinburgh, Langholm and Neilston and attended Barrhead High School. He attended the Royal School of Music and Drama in Glasgow, at which he did not complete his studies.
  He is best known for his portrayal of his character Rab C. Nesbitt in the sitcom of the same name. He starred in the TV show Naked Video, where the Nesbitt character originated, along with the Baldy Man who also obtained a spin-off series. Baldy Man is also particularly associated with the Hamlet advert in which he cannot get a satisfactory passport photo from a photobooth and lights up a cigar to calm himself down. Fisher also worked with the late Scottish comedian Rikki Fulton on the hit sketch show Scotch and Wry. Another Scottish comedian he worked with was Hector Nicol in the 1979 BBC drama Just a Boys' Game.
  He appeared in Michael Radford's 1984 film Nineteen Eighty-Four as Winston Smith's neighbour Parsons. In 1988, he had a leading role in a dramatised television documentary telling the story of the creation of the Christmas carol Silent Night, called Silent Mouse.   Goldenhersh was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in St. Louis. A graduate of Juilliard, Goldenhersh made her film debut in 1996 with her role in an adaptation of Herb Gardner's I'm Not Rappaport. From then on she appeared in films such as Swallowed, The Great Gatsby and The Believer, often in pivotal roles.   In 2006, Goldenhersh auditioned for the show The Class, a sitcom created by David Crane (one of the creators of Friends), and Jeffery Klarik (an executive producer of "Mad About You") and was cast in the part of Lina Warbler.   Jocelyn Pook (born 14 February 1960, Birmingham, England) is a British composer, pianist and viola player.
  Jocelyn Pook’s distinctive style is a product of her diverse experiences in classical, commercial, and so-called world music. After graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she performed with many pop artists including The Communards and Massive Attack, and formed Electra Strings for whom she wrote original material. She has worked extensively with eminent dance companies such as DV8 and Shobana Jeyasingh, and in 2002 she was commissioned by the BBC Proms to write a work for The King’s Singers in collaboration with Poet Laureate Andrew Motion.
  As one of the Leytonstone Contingent, Pook recorded on two occasions with pianist Jeremy Peyton Jones for Rough Trade and later for Century XXI. About a year later, she joined Anne Stephenson and Audrey Riley to accompany Virginia Astley both on stage and record. Session work followed and alternated with her co-founding of the Electra Strings with Australian violinist Sonia Slany and an album on the Village Life label. This neoclassical chamber quartet later transformed into the Brilliant Strings after she and Slany had gone their separate ways.

  John Gibb Marshall (born 11 January 1953), better known by the stage name John Sessions, is a Scottish actor and comedian.   Sessions was born in Largs, and spent some of his earliest years in Kempston, Bedfordshire and St Albans, Hertfordshire. He has an elder brother and a twin sister. Sessions is openly gay. He graduated with an M.A. in English literature from Bangor University, where he had begun to appear to audiences with his comedy in shows such as "Look back in Bangor" and "Marshall Arts". He later studied for a PhD from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, although he did not complete the doctorate.
  This period in his life was unhappy. In a 'Worst of Times' column for The Independent from around 1990, he talked of how the freezing Canadian weather had depressed him, he was smoking 'far too many cigarettes', 'had a couple of disastrous flings' and described his PhD dissertation as '200 pages of rubbish'.

  Kristopher "Kris" Marshall (born 1 April 1973)^{[citation needed]} is an English actor, best known for his role as Nick Harper in My Family, and as Adam in the adverts for BT Group since 2005.
  Marshall started acting at an early age, making an appearance in British TV series The Bill, but it was in 2000 that his major breakthrough role came as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family. In 2003 he appeared in the popular film "Love Actually" as Colin Frissell the disgruntled Brit who goes to America to find love. In 2004, Marshall appeared as "DS Luke Stone" in a police drama series entitled Murder City. Since 2005, Marshall has appeared in TV and print adverts for the BT Group alongside Esther Hall. Since his departure from a full-time part in My Family in 2003 he has returned twice. The first time was for one episode in season five (2004) and the second was for a Comic Relief special in 2005. In an interview, he claimed that playing the part of Nick was awkward, as he was a lot older than the character he was portraying. He finished working on Heist at the end of 2006, which aired on 23 April 2008 on BBC Four. During the summer of 2008 he appeared in the first UK run of Neil LaBute's play Fat Pig at the Trafalgar Studios. In 2011 be became a regular character, Ethan, on TV series Traffic Light.

  Sir Lewis Thomas Casson MC (26 October 1875 – 16 May 1969) was a British actor and theatre director, and husband of actress Dame Sybil Thorndike.
  Lewis Casson was born at 18 Alfred Road, Birkenhead, Cheshire. He was the son of a bank manager and amateur organ-builder, Thomas Casson, from Wales, and his wife Laura Ann. When he was young the family moved to Denbigh in Wales and Casson was educated at Ruthin School. In 1891 Casson's father decided to make a business of his hobby of building organs, and the family moved to London. Lewis soon began working in his father's business. When this failed, he began to study chemistry, but then trained as a teacher at St Mark's College, Chelsea, where he gained a teaching certificate. In 1900 Casson's father began another organ making business and Lewis worked in this for the next four years.
  Casson had always been interested in acting and had taken part in amateur productions in his youth. He continued to act semi-professionally until 1904, when he left his father's business to work as a professional actor. He joined the Royal Court Theatre under Harley Granville-Barker and remained there until 1908, when he joined a repertory company founded by Annie Horniman at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester, the first repertory theatre in the country.

  Paul Mackenzie Crook was born in Maidstone, Kent, and grew up in Dartford. His father, Michael Crook, worked for British Airways, and his mother, Sheila, was a hospital manager. He has two sisters. As a child he was put on a course of hormone therapy for three years due to a growth hormone deficiency. In the summers he spent time with his uncle at his tobacco farm in northern Zimbabwe, where he developed his love for painting. He was educated at the Wilmington Grammar School for Boys,, where he was the illustrator and cartoonist for the school magazine, Orion. He joined the Orchard Youth Theatre in Dartford when he was about 15 years old.

  Wanting to be a graphic artist, aged 18 he applied and was turned down three times for courses at the Kent Institute of Art & Design. He spent a while doing part-time jobs in a publisher's, a hospital, Halford's and Pizza Hut.

A right-handed batsman and a left-arm fast medium bowler, he averaged 5.54 in 94 innings with the bat, with a high score of 22. His bowling return was 276 wickets at 24.57, with a best of 9-43. He toured Pakistan with the MCC in 1955. A back injury caused his early return home, and prevented him playing in 1956.

  William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

  She was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire to Arthur Thorndike and Agnes Macdonald. Her father was a Canon of Rochester Cathedral. She was educated at Rochester Grammar School for Girls, and first trained as a classical pianist, making weekly visits to London for music lessons at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
  She gave her first public performance as a pianist at the age of 11, but in 1899 was forced to give up playing owing to piano cramp. At the instigation of her brother, the author Russell Thorndike, she then trained as an actress.
  At the age of 21 she was offered her first professional contract: a tour of the United States with the actor-manager Ben Greet's company. She made her first stage appearance in Greet's 1904 production of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. She went on to tour the U.S. in Shakespearean repertory for four years, playing some 112 roles.
  In 1908 Sybil was spotted by the playwright George Bernard Shaw when she understudied the leading role of Candida in a tour directed by Shaw himself. There she also met her future husband, Lewis Casson. They were married in December 1908, and had four children - John (1909–1999), Christopher (1912–1996), Mary (1914–2009) and Ann (1915–1990).

  William Shakespeare
  William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
  Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

• Zuleikha Robinson
  Zuleikha Robinson (born 29 June 1977) is a British television and film actress, brought up in Thailand and Malaysia by a Burmese-Indian mother and an English father. She is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, and best known for playing Ilana in the ABC show Lost.
  In 2006, she played a Bengali character called Moushumi Mazumdar in Mira Nair's acclaimed film The Namesake, based on the book of the same name. Robinson had a supporting role in the HBO series Rome, and played Eva Marquez, a NYPD detective, in the television drama on Fox, New Amsterdam.
  Robinson joined the cast of Lost in 2009 during its fifth season, as recurring character Ilana, and was promoted to series regular for the sixth season.
