Up River. East Kalimantan, 'Heart of Borneo'.
In mid October last year I travelled 400 kilometres up the Kayan, Pujungan and Bahau rivers in East Kalimantan with a team from WWF Indonesia. We spent six days in a long boat visiting and speaking to custom and village heads about conservation and culture in the area. I collected stories about the up start of eco tourism initiatives, the local economy, music and dance, traditional conservation techniques and the reopening of a WWF research station in Kayan Mentarang National Park. These video snapshots also show time at the research station, the clever navigation of particularly rocky patches in the river, exploring, dance, music, art and the friendly faces along the way. It was a really special week with a wonderful group of people; one where my basic bahasa was put to good test! I felt very lucky to experience this beautiful part of the world. I hope you enjoy this brief glimpse. Music by The Piano Guys - "Without You"

A Trial In East Kalimantan: The Benoaq Dayak Resistance - PREVIEW
Purchase: www.der.org This film, shot in Indonesia in 1999, gives us a rare insider's look at the beginnings of democracy during a period of political unrest and economic turmoil throughout the country. On the island of Kalimantan, a Dayak village organizes a sit-in to protest the destruction of their agricultural land and the desecration of sacred funeral sites by a multinational palm oil company. During the sit-in, eleven community leaders are arrested on charges of vandalism. We follow the fates of Petrus Dukung and Benyamin Tawwakng, the two young Dayak leaders, as they face a corrupt political and judicial system. The involvement of human rights lawyers, student groups, and other activists bring the Dayak struggle to the attention of the media. We witness the power of organized demonstrations as activists question their government and voice doubts about the court's commitment to justice. a film by Sandeep Ray, produced by Karma Foley distributed by Documentary Educational Resources

East Kalimantan
As a major producer of oil and timber, East Kalimantan is at present the most industrially advanced province of the island and the second largest province in Indonesia. It is also the home of the original inhabitants of Kalimantan, the Orang Gunung or Mountain People. The tribes are collectively called Dayak, although this name is not embraced by many tribes-people themselves, who prefer to be known by separate tribal names such as Iban, Punan and Banuaq. Local tribes traditionally live in communal long houses called Lamin or Umaq Daru. They are built on wooden piles, sometimes 3 meters high as protection against wild animals and flooding. The Punan people are nomadic hunter-gatherers, and only use the long house at the height of the rainy season. Steeped in tradition, the interior of the long house is typically divided into separate family quarters with a communal areas connecting each of the families. It is in these communal areas that village meetings are held and ceremonies performed, thereby reinforcing the strong tribal bonds in the face of rapidly advancing 20th century technology. Guardian statues are normally placed in front of long house to protect them against evil's spirits who bring disease and bad fortune. The more remote and traditional tribes-people have pierced earlobes, which over the years have become stretched by the weight of heavy gold or brass rings, and beautifully elaborate tattoos. Local jewelry and designs are intricate and powerful, often ...

East Kalimantan Nowadays.mp4
Forests cleared to make way for oil palm plantations. Orangutan considered as pest and COP work hard to save them from genocide. Afterward, the rescued orangutans send to Nature Resources Conservation of the Ministry of Forestry (BKSDA). As government has no any rescue centers, orangutans should be handed over to BOS Foundation. Unfortunately, the Foundation has limited resources. The funds for orangutan living cost become a main issue now. While you're watching this video, these poor orangutans may be in the rain inside the cage of BKSDA. They will undergo suffering forever, unless you help him. Please send an email to: dirjenphka@dephut.go.id. Ask the Director-General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation about what help they want so the orangutans could be evacuated immediately to BOS Foundation's Rescue Centre.

Kakaban Island - Underwater
Kakaban Island is part of the Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The island has an area of 774.2 hectares (1913 acres) and is quite steep with limestone cliffs covered with dense jungle right down to the water's edge and few beaches. The wall drops to 180 metres (590 ft) and currents can be strong with upwelling, downcurrent and reversing directions. The marine riches of this fantastic site are largely unexplored and you may even discover new species during your visit and be the first to document their existence. DAMN! I LOVE INDONESIA!
