Fault Lines - US Colombia Base Agreement
english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com At the end of October, the United States quietly signed a deal with Colombia -- its staunchest ally in Latin America, and the largest recipient of US military aid in the hemisphere. The agreement guarantees the United States access to Colombian military bases for the next ten years. The event went practically unnoticed in Washington. But it raised a storm of protest from South American governments threatened by the specter of US military intervention in the region. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to investigate why US access to the bases is a cause for so much consternation.

The Columbian Exchange: Crash Course World History #23
In which John Green teaches you about the changes wrought by contact between the Old World and the New. John does this by exploring the totally awesome history book "The Columbian Exchange" by Alfred Cosby, Jr. After Columbus "discovered" the Americas, European conquerors, traders, and settlers brought all manner of changes to the formerly isolated continents. Disease and invasive plant and animal species remade the New World, usually in negative ways. While native people, plants, and animals were being displaced in the Americas, the rest of the world was benefitting from American imports, especially foods like maize, tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and manioc. Was the Columbian Exchange a net positive? It's debatable. So debate. US and Colombia vs. Venezuela?
Colombia and the United States have signed an agreement that would grant the United States access to seven military bases in the South American country. The two countries say that this is all part of an effort to boost anti-drug and counterinsurgency operations. This deal, however, is not going over too well with leaders like Hugo Chavez who say that this pact will destabilize the region. RT's Dina Gusovsky speaks to author and journalist Eva Golinger from Caracas, Venezuela.

Fault Lines - Colombia's gold rush
Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations. Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed. The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. The rural workers and artisan miners who've mined for generations, and some whose ancestors were enslaved during the first gold rush centuries ago. Others are former coca farmers, put out of work by the US-led Plan Colombia. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr ...

Deportation of US Teen to Colombia Latest Failure of Immigration System
democracynow.org — The family of a Dallas teenager Jakadrien Turner is demanding answers after she was deported to Colombia, despite the fact that she is a US citizen and speaks no Spanish. Turner, a 15-year-old African-American runaway, was living in Houston when she was arrested for shoplifting and gave police a fake name that belonged to a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant from Colombia with warrants for her arrest. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) reportedly discovered Turner's fingerprints did not match those of the Colombian national's, but deported her anyway. "The country has no idea that we have got a rogue police force. That rogue police force is called ICE," says Ralph Isenberg, a Dallas businessman who has become an advocate for immigrants. "I'm hoping that Black America — who have a history of understanding the destruction of our families, because of what slavery has done to our families — will at some point wake up and understand that the problem of immigrants is something we can not ignore," adds Dallas Reverend Peter Johnson, a longtime civil rights advocate who has worked with the Turner family. Democracy Now! also speaks with Jacqueline Stevens, a political science professor at Northwestern University who recently published an exhaustive report on US citizens who have been detained and deported. Frost over the World - Alviro Uribe - 25 Sep 09
Colombia has South America's second-largest population, and under President Uribe has firmly aligned itself with the US in the fight against guerrilla insurgents and drug traffickers. Indeed, the country recently signed a new agreement to allow US bases in Colombia. Sir David asks President Uribe if American boots on Colombian soil is a price worth paying.

Latin America v. Obama: US Policy Under Fire at Colombian Summit
DemocracyNow.org - Historian Greg Grandin analyzes the US-Colombia "free trade" deal and the deepening split between much of Latin America and Washington following the Summit of the Americas in Colombia. The summit, which was marred by a US prostitution scandal, concluded Sunday without agreement on the key questions of whether Cuba should be allowed to attend the regional meetings and on the issue of the legalization of drugs. Latin American leaders said Cuba should be invited to the next Summit in Panama in 2015, but the United States and Canada dissented. Ecuador's President Rafael Correa boycotted this year's meeting because of Cuba's exclusion. On Sunday the United States announced that a free trade agreement with host country Colombia will come into effect in May, far earlier than expected. The agreement had earlier been deferred because of Colombia's weak record on workers rights, including murders and attacks on union activists.

David Beriain is a Spanish war correspondent that has covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo, Colombia and Kashmir, among others. He is currently in charge of coordinating the fea- ture section at Medina Media, a production com- pany based out of Spain.
Beriain is one of the few reporters in the world that has managed to infiltrate the FARC guerrilla camps in Colombia. His work there made him a finalist for the Bayeux-Calvados, the most pres- tigious international award for war correspon- dents. He has interviewed the Taliban command- ers who killed Spanish soldiers, met with the twelve-year-old hitmen that Colombian druglords exploit as child soldiers, and even accompanied the American Army on some of their most danger- ous military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His latest TV documentary took him to Eastern Congo, where he covered the conflict between the Congolese Army and the rebels who fight, kill and rape in order to gain the control of the Coltan and Cassiterite mines.
During his time at Sea Bites, Beriain was in charge of producing the story and coordinating all the members in the team. He was the one who convinced everyone to get on board and as a true leader, he turned a group of people who did not know each other into a real team.

CRACKER BARREL 'By Hand'
With two delightful spots for Cracker Barrel, Director Nieto of Paranoid US creates a magical breakfast voyage, traveling through the preparation of a meal at the famed restaurant. The spots are a debut for Euro RSCG/Chicago’s new brand campaign entitled “Handcrafted by Cracker Barrel”. Through the use of miniature sets built in connected wooden boxes, various scenes take place to reveal a story of comfort and home, concepts that are synonymous with the diner/country store.
Two very important factors contributed to the success of these spots: a detailed set and well-crafted transitions. To create the set’s meticulous features, the team turned to Production Designer Damon Fortier, who brought his extensive experience in model construction. The set was a combination of found objects, such as vintage suitcases, reclaimed wood and old doors, as well as actual Cracker Barrel paraphernalia used in their local stores, which was then shipped out for the Los Angeles production. Custom-made miniature furniture was also fashioned to produce exact dimensions to that of the furniture in the store.
To retain authenticity, both Nieto and the agency were determined to craft as much of the subtle trickery as possible in-camera. In pre-production, the creative team constructed a large-scale mockup of the planned set to assess proportions and sizes. Nieto then did a pre-visualization of the mock-up, which he later converted into a 3D scale. Since virtually every box was a different pass it was important to be completely accurate on set. The shots were ultimately composited in post, by tracking and then combining takes, to create a thoroughly seamless storyline. As both space and time were constrained, Nieto took special care to pace the action perfectly, so that the concept actually worked. The spots were color graded by Mark Gethin at MPC Los Angeles to enhance the warm tones of country life.
And to think Nieto, a Colombian-born director living in France, evokes the American cultural experience of Cracker Barrel so well!
