Russell Leslie Brown (born 17 September 1951) is a Scottish Labour Party politician. He is Member of Parliament for Dumfries and Galloway.

Early years[link]

Russell Brown was born in Annan, Scotland, and attended the local Annan Academy. In 1974 he began work as a plant operative at ICI and remained with the company until his election to Westminster.

In October 2010 he was appointed to Labour's front bench team as a Shadow Defence Minister.

Political history[link]

He was elected as a branch chairman within the Transport and General Workers Union 1979-1985. In 1986 he was elected as a councillor to the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council, and was the Labour Group Leader 1995-1997, Between 1988 and 1996 he also served as a councillor on the Annandale and Eskdale District Council.

He was selected to contest the seemingly safe Conservative and Unionist seat of Dumfries at the 1997 UK General Election. The MP of 33 years, Hector Monro retired and the Conservative and Unionist candidate was Struan Stevenson. The Conservative Party was completely wiped out in Scotland in 1997, and Russell Brown was elected as the Labour MP for Dumfries with a majority of 9,643, and has remained an MP since. He made his maiden speech on 7 July 1997.

Russell Brown became a Member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee in 1999, and left the committee after the 2001 General Election. He was made a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the House of Lords Gareth Wyn Williams in 2002. When Williams died in 2003 and he continued in the same position with his successor Valerie Amos. In the major redistribution of Scottish seats, his constituency of Dumfries was abolished and the new seat of Dumfries and Galloway was created. At the 2005 General Election he faced the sitting Conservative MP for Galloway and Upper Nithsdale Peter Duncan. Brown was elected with a majority of 2,922. Following the election he became the PPS to the Secretary of State for Scotland Alistair Darling and his successor Jim Murphy.

In the 2010 General Election Russell Brown was again challenged by Conservative Peter Duncan, who is now a councillor on Dumfries and Galloway Council. Despite Labour losing the election nationally, Russell Brown's local popularity meant he almost tripled his majority to 7,449.

In October 2010 Russell Brown was appointed to Labour's front bench as a Shadow Defence Minister. His brief is Shadow Minister for International Security Strategy.

Personal life[link]

He married Christine Margaret Calvert in 1973 and they have two daughters. He speaks French and German. Brown is a supporter of Queen of the South. He has appeared on television speaking about the club,^[1] and tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons congratulating them on their reaching the semi-final of the 2008 Scottish Cup.^[2]

Andrew "Andy" Wheating is an American middle-distance track athlete. Wheating competed for the United States in the men's 800 m at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. He is a professional runner for Nike.^[1]

Wheating was born in 1987, the son of Justin and Betsy Wheating. His father, born in South Africa, was a field hockey player.^[2]

High school[link]

Wheating ran two seasons of cross country and one season of track during his stay at Kimball Union Academy. During his first season of track in his senior year, he burst onto the track scene, ranking fourth nationally with a time of 3:54.28 in the 1500 meters. He led the nation with a 14:55.28 indoor 5000 meter time. His coach was Jeff Johnson. Wheating became one of the four incoming freshman at the University of Oregon that ranked top ten nationally in the 1500 m.

College career[link]

Wheating attended the University of Oregon in Eugene; his major was sociology. During his first year of track during the 2006-2007 season, Wheating ran the 800 m for the first time, and led the Ducks in the 800 with a time of 1:50.17. He got points in Pac-10 competition and was part of three relays that were all top five in school history. In addition, he was ranked seventh nationally in the 1500 metres with a time of 3:45.17. Wheating skipped his freshman year of cross country, making 2007 his first season. He was on the All-Pac-10 Second Team for finishing top fourteen in league competition.

During his second season of track in his sophomore year, Wheating became one of the leaders in both the 800 and 1500 nationally. He won eleven straight races in the 800 m races before losing by .01s to Jacob Hernandez in the NCAA Division I national championship. He also excelled in the 1500, clocking a time of 3:38.60, good enough for sixth all time on the University of Oregon list. His time in the 1500 was an NCAA best in 2008, but chose to compete in the 800 instead in both NCAA Nationals and the Olympic Trials. His time of 1:45.03 at the Olympic Trials was good for second on the all-time Univ. of Oregon 800 metres list. He was the NCAA champion in the 800 in both 2009 and 2010. In winning the 1500 at the 2010 NCAA championship he became the first Division I man to win both the 800 and 1500 in the same season since fellow Duck Joaquim Cruz in 1984.

2008 Olympic Trials & Games[link]

At the 2008 Olympic Trials, Wheating ran a personal best time of 1:45.03, finishing in second place behind Nick Symmonds and earning a spot on the US Olympic Team. In Beijing, he finished fourth in his qualifying heat and failed to advance to the semifinals.^[3]

On July 16, 2010, Wheating improved on his personal best in the 800 m with a time of 1:44.62.^[4][5] Six days later, on July 22, Wheating improved on his personal best in the 1500 m with a time of 3:30.90.^[6] That was nearly seven seconds better than his previous best and the fourth-best mark in U.S. history.^[7]

The Rt Rev Russel Featherstone Brown^[1] (also spelled Russell; 7 January 1900 - 7 January 1988) was an eminent Anglican priest, who became the eighth Bishop of Quebec.^[2]
Educated at Bishop's University, Lennoxville^[3] and ordained in 1933,^[4] his first post was a curacy at Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal. After this he was Priest in Charge of Fort St. John, British Columbia and then Rector of Sherbrooke until 1954 when he became Archdeacon of Quebec - a post he held until his elevation to the Episcopate. After 11 years he resigned to teach in Papua New Guinea. From 1976 he was an Assistant Bishop of Montreal.
In 2008 a memorial Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral was unveiled in his honour.^[5]
