Oliver Letwin foot-in-mouth over social mobility (05Apr11)
Conservative MP Oliver Letwin has a foot in mouth moment on the issue of social mobility, when he supposedly suggested that maybe it's better for people in Sheffield not fly anywhere on cheap holidays. This is from two video segments joined together just because the way they were individually presented made more sense of the context of the Letwin comment. Recorded from Sky News, 05 April 2011.

Surprisingly I have had a confirmation from the "care of" that they will ensure he sees the email. I was not expecting a response as I wrote to my MP about my situation 15 months ago along with dozens of news outlets.

Oliver Letwin and Danny Alexander - Coalition Government and the policy making process | 21.07.10
Oliver Letwin and Danny Alexander are at the heart of Coalition policy making. Oliver is Minister for Government Policy at the Cabinet Office and Danny is Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Both played a leading role in the creation of their respective party manifestos and both were involved in the initial negotiations that led to the formation of the Coalition Government. The two Ministers gave us an insight into the policy process in the new Government, and explained the philosophy and thinking behind the Government's policies.

We don't want more people from Sheffield flying away on cheap holidays Oliver Letwin
Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin has become the second most unpopular man in Sheffield for reportedly saying: "We don't want more people from Sheffield flying away on cheap holidays." Whether or not, like Marie Antoinette and her Qu'ils mangent de la brioche, he was misreported, what matters is that it suits the narrative of the time -- uncaring Tory laughing at poor people while dressed as Monopoly Man and lighting a cigar with £50 note with his legs resting on a servant. This is the same Letwin who already has that dreaded "Old Etonian" cross to bear, who said he would "go out on the streets and beg" rather than send his children to an inner-city comprehensive in London. That perfectly reasonable comment -- you have no idea what I'd do to avoid it -- caused outrage, and so has his Sheffield comment, leading to some ridiculous over-reactions: The leader of Sheffield City Council Paul Scriven has written to Mr Letwin demanding an apology and has asked him to visit the South Yorkshire city to explain his comments to residents. Councillor Scriven said: "If the reports are accurate then Mr Letwin should apologise and take up my invitation to come up to Sheffield to explain himself. I won't sit by and see Sheffield people put down." telegraph.co.uk
