Musical Director Carmel Dean is responsible for many different aspects in a musical production, from collaborating with the director to overseeing music rehearsals and conducting performances. Dean traces her theater career from performing in high school musicals in Australia with Heath Ledger, to attending NYU where she met adjunct faculty/composer William Finn, and went on to work with him on "Elegies" and The "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee". For "American Idiot", she's worked closely with music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator Tom Kitt, and is seen here running daily vocal rehearsals and in performance conducting the onstage band.

After leaving University, Jon began his career as a Piano Teacher in North London. In 2008, Jon decided he wanted to move on and within 5 years has built his career to become known as one of the major Musical Directors in the industry. Currently, he is looking after all aspects of live music for the world's biggest boy band, One Direction.
From 2008-2013 Jon has worked with Katy Perry, Marina and the Diamonds, X-Factor, Bryan Adams, Jessica Mau-boy, Olly Murs, Ndubz, Pixie Lott and Tulisa, to name a few. His Arranging, performances and recordings can be seen and heard on iTunes, concert DVD's and on the last 4 years of Radio 1's Best of Live Lounge albums. He is also Visiting Faculty for Tech Music School, coming back to teach and perform whenever his schedule allows him.
Spending the last 2 years with One Direction, 2013 sees Jon's biggest project to date. Musically Directing and playing Keyboards for a colossal 9 month world tour, visiting 131 arenas over 5 continents.

A music director may be the director of an orchestra, the director of music for a film, the director of music at a radio station, the head of the music department in a school, the co-ordinator of the musical ensembles in a university or college (but not usually the head of the academic music department), the head bandmaster of a military band, the head organist and choirmaster of a church, or an Organist and Master of the Choristers (a title given to a Director of Music at a Cathedral, particularly in England).
The title of "music director" or "musical director" is used by many symphony orchestras to designate the primary conductor and artistic leader of the orchestra. The term "music director" is most common for orchestras in the United States. With European orchestras, the titles of "principal conductor" or "chief conductor" are more common, which designate the conductor who directs the majority of a given orchestra's concerts in a season. In musical theatre and opera, the music director is in charge of the overall musical performance, including ensuring that the cast knows the music thoroughly, supervising the musical interpretation of the performers and pit orchestra, and conducting the orchestra.

Justin Randall Timberlake (born January 31, 1981) is an American singer, actor, and businessman. He achieved early fame when he appeared as a contestant on Star Search, and went on to star in the Disney Channel television series The New Mickey Mouse Club, where he met future bandmate JC Chasez. Timberlake became famous in the late 1990s as the lead singer and youngest member of the boy band 'N Sync, whose launch was financed by Lou Pearlman.
In 2002, he released his debut solo album, Justified, which sold more than seven million copies worldwide. The album was a commercial success, spawning the hits "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body". Timberlake continued his success with his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006), debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, and produced the US number-one hit singles "SexyBack", "My Love", and "What Goes Around... Comes Around".
Timberlake has won six Grammy Awards and four Emmy Awards. His first two albums made him one of the most commercially successful singers in the world, each selling in excess of 7 million copies. He also has an acting career, having starred in films such as The Social Network, Bad Teacher and Friends with Benefits. His other ventures include record label Tennman Records, fashion label William Rast, and the restaurants Destino and Southern Hospitality.

Plot: Amidst a huge publicity blitz by ABC-TV (including an iron-clad, long term contract) and considerable speculation as to whether he could win over the Baby Boomers as he had their parents, entertainment legend Milton Berle attempted a prime-time TV comeback with this comedy-variety series taped at the Hollywood Palace theater. Unfortunately, high budgets and big-name guest stars couldn't lure viewers away from competing shows, primarily the hugely successful "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." In 2008, Jon decided he wanted to move on and within 5 years has built his career to become known as one of the major Musical Directors in the industry. From 2008-2013 Jon has worked with Katy Perry, Marina and the Diamonds, X-Factor, Bryan Adams, Jessica Mau-boy, Olly Murs, Ndubz, Pixie Lott and Tulisa, to name a few. His Arranging, performances and recordings can be seen and heard on iTunes, concert DVD's and on the last 4 years of Radio 1's Best of Live Lounge albums. He is also Visiting Faculty for Tech Music School, coming back to teach and perform whenever his schedule allows him.
Spending the last 2 years with One Direction, 2013 sees Jon's biggest project to date. Musically Directing and playing Keyboards for a colossal 9 month world tour, visiting 131 arenas over 5 continents.

Ravi often referred to mononymously as Ravinderloo, is an Indian music director, who has composed music for several Hindi and Malayalam films. After a successful career in Hindi cinema, he took a break from 1970s to 1984, and made a successful comeback under the stage name Bombay Ravi.
Biography
Ravinda Sharma gave several hit songs and received Filmfare nominations for these films: Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Do Badan (1966), Humraaz (1967), Ankhen (1968), and Nikaah (1982). He won Filmfare awards for Gharana(1961) and Khandaan (1965).[1] His other successful films include Waqt, Neel Kamal and Gumraah. His songs Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai, Babul ki duyaen leti ja and Doli chadh ke dulhan sasural chali became very popular in wedding celebrations. He was one of the music directors who shaped the career of Asha Bhosle with songs like Tora man darpan. He was also instrumental in making Mahendra Kapoor a popular singer in Bollywood. After a successful career in Hindi films during 1950s and 1960s, he took a long break after 1970 till 1982. In 1982, he gave music for the Hindi film Nikaah, and one of the film's songs Dil ke armaan aansooyon main beh gaye sung by Salma Agha won her the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award. He has used the instrument been for the song Man dole mere tan dole (film Naagin).
In 1980s, he made a comeback as a music director in Malayalam (and some Hindi) films as Bombay Ravi. During 1986, the famous Malayalam director Hariharan convinced him to start a second innings especially for his lovers in South India. The first movie was Panchagni. The songs saagarangaLE and aa raatri maanju poyi (sung by Yesudas and Chitra) were hits. Same year Hariharan's "Nakhakshathangal" also came out and Chithra won her second national award for the song "Manjalprasaadavum" from the same film. All the songs from the malayalam movie "Vaisali" released in 1989 were super hits and Chithra won her 3rd National Award for the song "Indupushpam Choodi Nilkum" from the same movie. Ravi released some albums thereafter. Ravi has composed for many films produced by South Indian banners - Ghoonghat, Gharana, Grihasti, Aurat, Samaj ko badal dalo (Gemini), Meherban, Do kaliyan (AVM) Bharosa, Khandaan (Vasu films). In fact he mentions that he was close to the late Sivaji Ganashan.

Same year Hariharan's "Nakhakshathangal" also came out and Chithra won her second national award for the song "Manjalprasaadavum" from the same film. All the songs from the malayalam movie "Vaisali" released in 1989 were super hits and Chithra won her 3rd National Award for the song "Indupushpam Choodi Nilkum" from the same movie. Ravi released some albums thereafter. Ravi has composed for many films produced by South Indian banners - Ghoonghat, Gharana, Grihasti, Aurat, Samaj ko badal dalo (Gemini), Meherban, Do kaliyan (AVM) Bharosa, Khandaan (Vasu films). In fact he mentions that he was close to the late Sivaji Ganashan.

Aucilla Christian Academy’s fourth grade class presented the exciting musical “Jailhouse Rock!” on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in ACA’s auditorium. Joey Mix plays the trombone and has been a musical director on ships since 2001. He explains the role of the MD and how an act should conduct themselves during a rehearsal with the band. GET YOUR MUSIC RIGHT
As you'd expect, Pete's main concern is the quality of the musical arrangements the band is asked to play. Too many acts think of the music as an afterthought. It should be the main priority.
First impressions count for a lot so as well as being technically well arranged your music should be clearly laid out so it's easy to read. It should look good. The pages should be clear and free from endless scribbles and annotations. If necessary have your parts re-copied so they're very clear. Remember you'll only have around 90 minutes to rehearse a 50 minute show. There isn't time to keep stopping and starting to explain things. If the music is clear and correct the band will read it right first time. Asking them to deal with crappy charts is insulting and ultimately looks bad on you.
CLICK TRACKS
Musicians don't really like using click tracks. They prefer to work live without an electronic pulse in their ear. It can take away from the feel and their creativity. Unless you're really worried about tempos or an orchestral sound try to use them sparingly.
Pete's Tips for New Acts:
- Keep chat down to a minimum. Unless you've got something of real interest to your audience, don't bother.
- Take care with your musical arrangements. Don't skim. Spend money to get them right first time.
- Try to avoid cliches. Do we really need someone else singing Wind

It's no surprise that the main concern musicians have with acts on ships is the quality of their musical arrangements. I talk to Hamish about the importance of good charts and how a new act with no charts and no money can get started. There's some great advice here. I wish I'd had this conversation when I was starting out, it would have saved me a lot of money and stress.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ARRANGER
Some cruise lines use just one horn some two, three, four or five. It's hard to know how to have your music scored to deal with these different line ups. It's also hard to choose the right arranger. I've written a lot out this in chapter 7 of Cabaret Secrets “Love Your Musicians”. There I lay out in exact detail the method I use to cover all eventualities.
Hamish's tips
- Invest money in your arrangements.
- If you have a small budget don't waste money on poor charts. Spend what you have on your key songs (e.g. the opener, closer and maybe two or three more in the show) and include a few standards where you can use basic lead sheets (for free) just for the rhythm section. - - - They'll sound small, but good. Build your pad as your budget allows.
- Look at the length of the cruise. If it's a short cruise stick to well known material. If it's a world cruise where the guests are onboard for four months, they will appreciate more varied and interesting material.
- Look at where the ship is sailing from so you know the nationality of the guests on board. Cunard now sails out of Hamburg so on those cruises you'd be wise to say a few words or sing something in German.

Ghulam Haider initiated his journey in the world of music by starting lessons with Babu Ganesh Laal. He joined the Alfred Threatrical Company in Calcutta as a harmonium player after five years. Ghulam Haider initiated his journey in the world of music by starting lessons with Babu Ganesh Laal. He joined the Alfred Threatrical Company in Calcutta as a harmonium player after five years.
In 1932, he got the chance to compose music for A. R. Kardar’s film, Swarg Ki Seerhi, made in Lahore. Soon after in 1939, he wrote the musical score for D. M. Pancholi’s Punjabi venture, Gul-e-Bakawali. It was a huge hit, especially Baby Noorjahan's songs, 'Shala Jawaniyan Mane' and 'Pinjra De Vich Qaid Jawani'.
His major hit was Khazanchi in 1941 which established him not only with the audience but also in the music industry. Haider was innovative and he blended popular ragas with the rich verve and rhythm of Punjabi music.
Haider moved to Bombay and worked in films like Chal Chal Re Naujawaan (1944), Phool (1944), Humayun (1945), Bairam Khan (1946) and Shama (1946). The soundtrack of Shama was unforgettable for his use of the tabla in songs like 'Gori Chali Piya Ke Des', 'Ham Gharibon Ka Bhi Poora Kabhi Armaan Kar De' and 'Ik Tera Sahara'. Shamshad Begum sang some of his most famous compositions.
In 1948, Ghulam Haider also composed music for Majboor, featuring Lata Mangeshkar's 'Dil Mera Toda'. He also composed for movies like Padmini, Barsaat Ki Ek Raat, Patjhad and Shaheed. Shaheed featured the patriotic song, Watan Ki Raah Mein Watan Ke Naujawan Shaheed Ho, which was a hit.
Eventually he moved back to Lahore and started his own firm, Filmsaz. Its first production, Gulnar was released in November 1953. Ghulam Haider passed away a few days later. The Cine Musicians' Association in Mumbai called a special meeting to mourn the loss of this great composer.

The J.S. Bach Foundation has embarked on a remarkable undertaking: over a period of some 25 years, the Foundation will perform the complete vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685--1750).
Each month, one of the over 200 Bach cantatas is performed in the idyllic town of Trogen in Appenzell, Switzerland. With a rhythm of 12 cantatas per year, the project is estimated to conclude in the year 2030. All introductory workshops, concerts and reflection lectures on the cantata texts are recorded on DVD and CD; the texts of the lectures are published in a continually expanding Bach Anthology.
The main aim of the J.S. Bach Foundation's ambitious project is to provide a living Bach experience for today's listeners and to deepen our understanding of the great composer's works. The artistic director of the foundation is Rudolf Lutz, who rehearses and conducts all performances with the choir, orchestra and solo vocalists.

Off-Broadway productions are known for their artistic qualities and mass appeal. There was a musical that drew attention in 2015 and it was none other than "Comfort Women: A New Musical." It shed light on the issue of the Japanese Imperial Army's enforced sexual slavery during the wartimes through a heart-rending story of the enforced sex slaves. It left a strong impression, with its compelling story and artistic factors.
The director behind the musical is Kim Hyun-jun, who wanted to tell the world the tragic history of Korea and the atrocities committed against its people. After working on the musical production and enduring challenges and struggles for many years, he made a successful directorial debut in the U.S.A.
The INNERview crew went to Daehangno, often described as the "Broadway of Korea," to meet Director Kim, and hear his journey to putting on the inspiring musical, "Comfort Women," from the production process to the debut performance.
