Embodied music cognition – a new approach to mediation technologies
There are two important trends in modern science that will have a large impact on music research and media research in general. The fist trend concerns the shift from disembodied cognition to embodied cognition. Embodied music cognition offers a framework for dealing with music, based on a hypothesis about the relationship between musical experience (mind) and sound energy (matter). In this mind/matter relationship, the human body is seen as a biologically designed mediator which transfers physical energy to an ontology of action-oriented meanings, that is, to a mental level in which experiences, values and intentions form the basic ingredients of music signification. Also the reverse process is possible, namely, that the human body transfers an idea, or mental representation, into a material or energetic form. This two-way mediation process is largely constrained by the body, which is assumed to play a central role in all musical activities. The recent focus on multimodal processing using different types of sensing technologies offer a straightforward approach to embodied music cognition. It is based on measurement of gestures and adaptation of technology to action-oriented intelligence. Under certain conditions, the natural mediator (the human body) can be extended with artificial mediators so that mental activity naturally extends to the new environment that is covered by the artificial mediator. The second trend is the shift embodied music cognition to social music cognition. A better understanding of the natural mediation between human mind and brain, through the human body, will lead to a better understanding of social cognition, that is, how music has impact on groups of people. Social music cognition brings in the interactions among listeners, among players, and between players and listeners and opens up a new fild of technological involvement that is related to social computing. Music research, given the close relationship between perception and action, and between the individual and the social, is at the cutting edge of new explorations in science and technology with a number of applications in fields ranging from entertainment to music therapy, interactive music systems and music information retrieval. This lecture will give a number of examples of recent research results in the field of embodied and social music cognition.
Biographie
Marc Leman is professor in systematic musicology at Ghent University, Belgium(Gent). He is head of the Dept. Art, Music, and Theater Sciences and director of IPEM. His research activities deal with questions related to musical meaning formation, the effect of music on human cognition and emotion, the description of musical content, and the understanding of gestures, musical imitation and corporeal resonance. His research is focused on finding regularities in human sensory, perceptive, cognitive, synaesthetic/kinaesthetic, social and emotional/affective information processing, using methods that bridge the gap between natural and cultural sciences.

Abstract:
Given a network in which nodes are associated with a list of attributes, how can we define and characterize communities? How can we spot anomalous communities and anomalies within communities? Networks have long been studied and focus has most recently shifted to 'networks with content'. Long-studied network questions, such as ranking, clustering, and similarity, are reconsidered for such networks, as the new information such as node/edge attributes and types help enrich the formulations and increase our understanding of real-world networks. In this talk, I will introduce our work on spotting anomalies in networks with node attributes. Our main approach to anomaly mining in attributed networks is through communities. In particular, we quantify the degree that a community can be characterized through (a subset of) attributes on which its members 'click'. We then use such a quantity as a 'normality' score, based on which we identify individual anomalous nodes inside communities as well as communities that are anomalous as a group of nodes due to their low normality.

Léman (department)
Léman was the name of a department of the First French Empire. Its name is the French name of Lake Geneva, Lac Léman. It was formed in 1798, when the republic of Geneva was occupied by the French. Léman also included districts that were previously part of the departments of Mont-Blanc (northern Savoy) and Ain (around Gex). Its territory corresponded with the present Swiss canton of Geneva and parts of the present French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie.
The capital of the Léman department was Geneva. The department was subdivided into the following arrondissements and cantons (situation in 1812):
Its population, in 1812, was 210,478 and its area was 280,000 hectares.
After the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815, the former republic of Geneva became a Swiss canton, and Savoy was returned to the Kingdom of Sardinia. The area around Gex returned to department of Ain.

Child development
Child development refers to the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. It is a continuous process with a predictable sequence yet having a unique course for every child. It does not progress at the same rate and each stage is affected by the preceding types of development. Because these developmental changes may be strongly influenced by genetic factors and events during prenatal life, genetics and prenatal development are usually included as part of the study of child development. Related terms include developmental psychology, referring to development throughout the lifespan, and pediatrics, the branch of medicine relating to the care of children. Developmental change may occur as a result of genetically-controlled processes known as maturation, or as a result of environmental factors and learning, but most commonly involves an interaction between the two. It may also occur as a result of human nature and our ability to learn from our environment.

Embodied music cognition
Embodied music cognition is a direction within systematic musicology interested in studying the role of the human body in relation to all musical activities.
It considers the human body as the natural mediator between mind (focused on musical intentions, meanings, significations) and physical environment (containing musical sound and other types of energy that affords human action).
Introduction
Given the impact of body movement on musical meaning formation and signification, the musical mind is said to be embodied. Embodiment assumes that what happens in the mind is depending on properties of the body, such as kinaesthetic properties.
Embodied music cognition tends to see music perception as based on action. For example, many people move when they listen to music. Through movement, it is assumed that people give meaning to music. This type of meaning-formation is corporeal, rather than cerebral because it is understood through the body. This is different from a disembodied approach to music cognition, which sees musical meaning as being based on a perception-based analysis of musical structure. The embodied grounding of music perception is based on a multi-modal encoding of auditory information and on principles that ensure the coupling of perception and action.

There are two important trends in modern science that will have a large impact on music research and media research in general. Abstract:
Given a network in which nodes are associated with a list of attributes, how can we define and characterize communities? How can we spot anomalous communities and anomalies within communities? Networks have long been studied and focus has most recently shifted to 'networks with content'. Long-studied network questions, such as ranking, clustering, and similarity, are reconsidered for such networks, as the new information such as node/edge attributes and types help enrich the formulations and increase our understanding of real-world networks. In this talk, I will introduce our work on spotting anomalies in networks with node attributes. Our main approach to anomaly mining in attributed networks is through communities. In particular, we quantify the degree that a community can be characterized through (a subset of) attributes on which its members 'click'. We then use such a quantity as a 'normality' score, based on which we identify individual anomalous nodes inside communities as well as communities that are anomalous as a group of nodes due to their low normality.

Fauconnet launched the Évian mineral water company (Société des Eaux Minérales d'Évian) and purchased the cities' two main springs (the better-known being the Cachat spring named after the family that sold it) in March 1827. M. Fauconnet's company eventually went bankrupt, and the springs were bought by the Hôtel des Bains. In the following years, many hotels (Hôtel des quatre saisons, Hôtel de France, Hôtel des Alpes) were built, helping the town's popularity as a holiday resort.

The springs of Evian were still rather unknown at the time of the French Revolution. But the First Empire's interest for spa towns inspired a scientist to analyse the Evian springs in 1807 and 1808.
A lakeside port and a new road (RN5) connecting the town to Milan and Paris were constructed in 1809. In 1823, Genevan entrepreneur M. Fauconnet launched the Évian mineral water company (Société des Eaux Minérales d'Évian) and purchased the cities' two main springs (the better-known being the Cachat spring named after the family that sold it) in March 1827. M. Fauconnet's company eventually went bankrupt, and the springs were bought by the Hôtel des Bains. In the following years, many hotels (Hôtel des quatre saisons, Hôtel de France, Hôtel des Alpes) were built, helping the town's popularity as a holiday resort.
The Cachat mineral waters SA (Société Anonyme des Eaux Minérales de Cachat) was created in December 1859 by Parisian investors, selling Évian water, and in 1865 the small town changed its name to Évian-les-bains to promote its rise as a spa town. Three other springs joined the Cachat (Guillot, Bonnevie, Corporau). Improvement in transportation (a railroad station) helped make the town a more famous spa.
In the late 19th century, the city contained more than 20 hotels. The hills and the lakeshore were covered with noble houses and luxurious villas and a theatre and a casino were built on the lakeside. In 1902, the baths were constructed and in 1909, the architect Hébrard built one of the most luxurious hotels: the Royal Hotel. Evian considers itself one of the top European spas, claiming popularity with high society figures such as Countess Anna de Noailles, Frédéric Mistral, the Lumiere Brothers and Marcel Proust.

Prior to Hertz, Joy worked at Medicus International, where she was responsible strategic scientific communications, marketing and promotional planning for global brands. She began her sustainability career in Australia as a sustainability consultant for the New South Wales (NSW) Business Chamber and then the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice.
How did you first get involved in the green industry?
I received my bachelor’s degree in life sciences and environmental science from Kansas State University and did my graduate work in sustainability in Australia. After grad school, I became a sustainability consultant for the NSW Business Chamber and also the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice. While there, I led sustainability strategy development and implementation for new and medium-sized businesses and eventually for juvenile justice detention centers and regional offices.
After returning to NYC, I managed strategic scientific communications, marketing and promotional planning for global brands. Next, I joined Hertz, where I was able to jump back into developing and implementing global sustainability strategies.
What interests you most about being green?
To me, tackling the challenge of making “green living” and sustainability interesting to consumers is what excites me the most. I feel as though environmental movements around sustainability are sometimes misdirected in that people and groups often use scare tactics. These tactics actually drive away mainstream audiences that want to hear something more positive. There’s a common misconception that just one person cannot make a difference, which definitely isn’t true. Every individual has a lot of power to make change through simple actions, whether it’s how they travel or where they make their purchases from. It really comes down to the simple decisions people make in their everyday lives.
Another thing that interests me is working with companies and through partnerships to create solutions and strategies that better address environmental issues and also drive business. If we can fundamentally change how we operate and produce goods, the impact potential is incredible, for people and the planet.
I also love taking into account the travel aspect of green. I love to travel and there can obviously be a very large environmental footprint around most forms of travel. The perspective you get from traveling and learning how to be greener while traveling — including from other cultures — is priceless. Again, it all comes back to those little things we can do to make a difference.
What is your biggest "green" pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is when people leave the water running while they’re brushing their teeth. Another one that gets to me is “green washing,” as well as when people use scare tactics to get others to be more environmentally friendly.
What green trend is most exciting to you or your industry?
From an industry perspective, one of the most exciting trends to me is the use of innovation and technology to improve travel options and the way people get around. Such as, better utilization of assets through a shared economy and travel planning through apps and collaborative information sites are changing how people experience new places. An example of this would be the Airbnb or car-sharing trends: making use of fixed assets across a large group of people versus individual ownership that often sit idle are great for both the environment and the economy. This will become even more critical as populations grow and shift toward urban living. Another example would be using a Hertz NeverLost Navigation tablet so you can more efficiently and quickly get to your destination, thus saving gas.

Waiting is often the most difficult part of the heart transplant process.
You're always wondering when that organ will come.
Wait lists and times depend on several factors, including age, weight, blood type and distance.
Frequent lab work and clinic visits may be required prior to transplant.
Remember, there is no traveling outside a 4-hour driving distance from Cincinnati Children's hospital while on the waiting list.
Also, remember to notify your provider if you're ill or having symptoms.
We will notify you when we accept and organ. We will then give you information about when to stop eating and how to prepare for the surgery. You will then be admitted to the CICU.
Please keep in mind that once the doctors get to the donor hospital and see the donor heart, they may determine that it's not good for transplant. However, if they feel like it is good, we will move forward with the surgery.
You'll recover here, in the CICU. You can expect a lot of lines, tubes and a breathing tube. But don't be scared, this is just so the doctors can monitor you closely.
It will take you a little while to recover from surgery. You may feel nauseas and not want to eat. But that is OK. Give yourself some time, and it will improve.
You will have to be on a lot of medications, some even for the rest of your life.
Post transplant, you'll have to stay within 9 miles of Cincinnati Children's hospital for up to three months. Following that, your normal life can start to resume.
