Syrian Armed Forces Fire Scud Missiles at Free Syrian Army and Rebels?
Syrian government forces have fired Scud missiles at insurgents in recent days, escalating the two-year-old conflict against rebels seeking to overthrow the regime, US officials said Wednesday. Speaking on condition of anonymity, two officials said forces of President Bashar Assad have fired the missiles from the Damascus area into northern Syria. These officials asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly. That has further isolated Assad's regime and opened a way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling to oust him. One official said there was no indication that chemical weapons were aboard the missiles. Officials have said over the past week that they feared rebel advances were prompting Assad to consider using chemical weapons. This official estimated that the number of Scuds fired was more than a half dozen, confirming details first reported by The New York Times. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Assad has fired missiles, but wouldn't specify what kind. "As the regime becomes more and more desperate, we see it resorting to

Unnamed US officials said the regime had fired the weapons from the capital Damascus into northern Syria. A Nato official also said that a number of short-range ballistic missiles had been launched inside Syria this week. It was not immediately clear why President Bashar al Assad's forces would deploy scud missiles, which can have a range of up to a few hundred kilometres and are best-known internationally from the 1991 Gulf War when the then Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein fired them at Israel. The White House said if true, it was a sign of Mr Assad's "desperation" amid a growing army of rebel fighters, "more unified and organised" than ever before. News of the development comes on the same day as a car bomb and two other explosives ripped through the main entrance of the Syrian interior ministry in Damascus, reportedly killing and injuring dozens of people. White House spokesman Jay Carney, said he could not confirm the report of scud missiles being used, but told reporters: "If true, this would be the latest desperate act from a regime that has shown utter disregard for innocent life. Forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad's regime have fired Scud missiles at rebel fighters in Syria, according to US and Nato officials, in what appears to be a further escalation of the conflict. In Brussels, a Nato official expanded on a report in the New York Times, saying that a number of short-range ballistic missiles had been launched inside Syria. "Allied intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets have detected the launch of a number of unguided, short-range ballistic missiles inside Syria this week ... Trajectory and distance travelled indicate they were Scud-type missiles," said the Nato official. Meanwhile, Syria's new opposition body received full political recognition from more than 100 countries on Wednesday in a move that takes it a step closer to being declared a government-in-exile. The nascent organisation, known as the Syrian National Coalition, immediately reached out to the country's Alawite community, a core Assad constituency which has largely remained loyal to the regime throughout the 21-month crisis. Chastened by criticism that opposition members had done little to convince minorities that they have a stake in a post-Assad Syria, the coalition's new leader, Moaz al-Khatib, called on Alawites to rise up against regime rule. "We send a direct message to the Alawite brethren," he said. "The Syria revolution is extending its hand to you, so extend your hand back and start civil disobedience against the regime because it repressed you like it
