The Ancient Island of Crete - Knossos
Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, transliteration: Krētē, modern transliteration Kriti) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8336 km² (3219 square miles). Crete is one of the 13 peripheries of Greece and covers the same area as the Greek region of Crete from before the 1987 administrative reform[1]It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece; while it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), Cretans identify themselves as Greeks. Heraklion is the largest city and capital of Crete. The first human settlements on the island, dating to the aceramic Neolithic, used cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and dogs as well as domesticated cereals and legumes; ancient Knossos was the site of one of these major Neolithic (then later Minoan) sites.[2] Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilisation; the Minoan. Early Cretan history is replete with legends such as those of King Minos, Theseus, Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus passed on orally via poets such as Homer. Crete was involved in the Mithridatic Wars, initially repelling an attack by Roman general Marcus Antonius Creticus in 71 BC. Nevertheless, a ferocious three-year campaign soon followed under Quintus Caecilius Metellus, equipped with three legions and Crete was finally conquered by Rome in 69 BC, earning for Metellus the title "Creticus". Gortyn was made capital of the island, and Crete became a Roman province, along ...

KNOSSOS Crete, Greece
Around 7 kilometres southeast of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is the Palace of Knossos, the largest of all the Minoan palaces, located on the picturesque, partly tree-covered Kephala Hill. As parts of the palace have been rebuilt, its former splendor makes a visit to Knossos even more worthwhile. At the beginning of the 20th century, large scale excavations of the former Minoan palace were carried out under the leadership of Englishman, Arthur Evans. In just three years, Evans and his team of archaeologists excavated an area of almost 20000 square metres. Visitors can move around the newly built areas of the palace and imagine the former life of the Minoans. Almost all of the palace's 1200 rooms and splendid inner courtyards are asymmetrical, which is in contrast to the subsequent Ancient Greek epochs of strict symmetrical architecture. As with other Minoan palaces in Phaistos and Malia, around 1700 BC, the first palace in Knossos was destroyed by a devastating earthquake. Around 100 years later, the palace was rebuilt and was simply known as the 'New Palace'. These buildings have also been referred to as the 'Labyrinth of the Minotaurs'. But if the legendary Minotaurs actually resided in the Palace of Knossos, it has yet to be confirmed by the world of archaeology!

Knossos - Crete
crete-kreta.com Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, probably the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture. It has been substantially and imaginatively "rebuilt", making the site accessible to the casual visitor in a way that a field of unmarked ruins is not.

Knossos
A video segment, sans narration, so you can hear the underscore. This is the famous palace on the island of Crete - home to the Minoans. Good king Minos lived here. The labyrinth was here, and so was the dreaded Minotaur. Daedalus and Icarus were escaping from here when they made their famous wings of wax and poor Icarus flew too close to the sun. The civilization was wiped out by massive tidal waves around 1500 BC (if memory serves me correctly) when the volcano on nearby Santorini erupted. From the murals found at the site, it appears that this was a very handsome people who lived a very pleasant life. Bull leaping was a popular sport with them, and that is what the music plays most - the pleasant lifestyle and bull leaping. The segment is still rough and I will tighten it up when the narration is recorded.

Ritual and Worship at Knossos (Minoan Bronze Age)
This movie presents scenes of worship at Knossos and other sacred sites of the Minoan Bronze Age with the following themes: 1. Shrines, 2. Priestesses wielding the power of the Goddess, 3. Men worshipping the Goddess, 3. Ceremonial processions, 4. Invoking the Goddess and private prayers, 5. Ritual dances, 6. Rites of Initiation, 7. The Holy Chalice drinking ritual. The Minoan culture was a Bronze Age civilization in the Aegean ocean that emerged on Crete during the 27th century BC and came to dominate surrounding islands such as Thera (Santorini), Mycenea and numerous others. Their religion originated in Southeastern Europe and Anatolia, and religious symbolism show a strong connection to Stone Age civilizations in Greece and Anatolia (present day Turkey), such as Catal Höyuk and Hacilar. Their religion was centered around the worship of a Great Goddess and women were as powerful as men (if not more). Their civilization was peaceful and highly prosperous and wielded great political, spiritual and economic power in the Eastern Mediterranean, as the Minoans dominated the oceans. They maintained a strong exchange of trade and ideas with Egypt and the Middle East (Sumer, Assyria etc), yet were different from these cultures insofar as they kept internal peace and somehow also managed to keep the peace with their surrounding cultures that had become more warlike and hierarchic. The myth of King Minos is just that a myth, as recent research has shown that there was no king at ...

Greece: Crete, Knossos and the Minoan Civilization ~ Psarantonis ~ Yannis Markopoulos
Crete and her Minoan Art and Minoan Civilization.... The video starts with sceneries from Crete as it is nowadays to create an introduction for the historical monuments of Knossos, for the Art of a Bronze Age civilization that flourished on the Mediterranean island of Crete from about 3000 BC to 1000 BC. The term originates from the legendary King Minos, ruler of Crete in Greek mythology, and was first used in 1894 by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, whose extensive excavations on the island form the basis of our understanding of Minoan art. Knowledge of Minoan culture is based almost entirely on archaeological evidence rather than written sources, and in many ways the culture remains mysterious. However, the quality and quantity of surviving art-facts show that the island was highly prosperous (it has a good climate and plentiful natural resources and was well situated for trade in the ancient world), and it seems to have enjoyed lengthy periods of peace. The civilization was evidently destroyed shortly before 1000 BC, perhaps partly because of an earthquake and partly because of invasion. The most important city of ancient Crete was Knossos, and the huge palace there is the best remaining example of Minoan culture. There were at least two later palaces on the original site, built between 2000 BC and 1600 BC, which was the high point of Minoan culture. The palaces were complex and sophisticated in design, with numerous courtyards and staircases, and they were ...
