Robert Noyce - Semiconductor Pioneer
Robert Noyce is credited with Jack Kilby for the invention of the integrated circuit and co-founded both Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel. In this 1984 lecture, Robert Noyce reviews the development of the integrated circuit from its infancy in the 1950s to the early-1980s as well as its impact on technology and society. Noyce discusses the innovations in transistors that lead to the creation of the integrated circuit. Next, Robert Noyce talks about the technical challenges of building increasingly more compact and more powerful semiconductors as well as the overall effects of Moore's Law. Finally, Noyce looks ahead to the future of semiconductor development that was uncertain at the time of this lecture, but is now in our past. Robert N. Noyce was born in Burlington, Iowa and grew up in Grinnell, Iowa. A physics major at Grinnell College, he graduated with a PhD in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953. William Shockley hired him from Philco Corporation to work at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratories in 1956. With eight other employees he left to found Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation in 1957. As general manager of the Fairchild semiconductor operation and a vice president of Fairchild Camera and Instrument, he presided over a decade of innovation in semiconductor technology including co-invention of the integrated circuit. In 1968 Noyce co-founded Intel Corporation with Gordon Moore where he served as President until 1975 when he became Chairman ...

Video shot and edited by: Julie K. Munden, Barton Coordinator of Video & Public Relations. Additional video shot by: Barton PR student employees: Kevin Manase & David Berry. Additional photos and video supplied by: Brandon Steinert and Jessica Vsetecka-Barton Community College. Barton's Ninth Annual Jack Kilby Science Day draws hundreds of high school students October 18, 2012 Story and photos by Brandon Steinert Floating through space hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth on Christmas Eve of 1968, Frank Borman of Apollo 8 ended a live broadcast with, "And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth." These words came on the heels of arguably one of the worst years in recent history. From some of the gloomiest and bloodiest days of the Vietnam War to race riots and more, it was no picnic. Director of Education at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center Tom Holcomb said that moment changed humanity for the better, forever, as people witnessed their tiny blue planet from the perspective of astronauts orbiting the moon. He said the view caused a paradigm shift in the minds of people everywhere as they realized "we're all stuck on the same tiny rock, and we can't get away." That was the primary message of his speech as the keynote speaker at the Ninth Annual Jack Kilby Science Day at Barton Community College Thursday morning. The popular event features several sessions for ...

Jack Kilby Science Day 2010
Jack Kilby Science Day is free for high school students from throughout central Kansas. This activity also is open to high school science, technical and vocational teachers, counselors and administrators. Attendance is arranged through pre-registration by the high schools or home schools in the area. The college has close to 600 high school students, teachers and staff pre-registered for the day. In addition, this year for the first time, local fifth and sixth graders and local seventh and eighth graders will come to the campus to attend sessions at 1 pm and 2 pm, respectively, to witness Mahoney's keynote presentation. Simmons said more than 500 students are expected for each of those afternoon shows. Mahoney will present his keynote program for high school students 9 am "He captivates his audience from the very beginning," said Simmons, who attended one of his shows at the Oklahoma Science Museum. "He is able to teach science while entertaining. He gets the students interested in science and that starts the day with a bang." His experiments with fire and explosives, and some well-placed science jokes are bound to get the students' attention. In addition to Mahoney's presentation, participants in Jack Kilby Science Day have opportunities to explore science and technology in numerous sessions that will kindle and reinforce in students an enthusiasm for science and related careers. The event is sponsored by the college and funded in part by Farmers Bank and Trust NA and ...
