Was asked by a young gentleman to upload this clip. Hope he enjoys it. Clip from Argyle TV film 'Shipyard Sally' starring Gracie Fields. The film is a 'flag waver' trying to highlight the plight of Clydebank workers in the late 1930's.

Gracie Fields -1978 Royal Variety guest appearance -Full Song!
Dame Gracie Fields makes her 10th Royal Variety Appearance as a surprise guest at the end of the 1978 tribute to the Queen Mother. Gracie, aged 80 here, performs her theme song 'Sally.' It was Gracie's penultimate public performance, but final TV performance in the UK. This is the best quality version of this that has ever been uploaded to Youtube, and the full song too, which is rarely seen in its entirety. It's a shame that the announcer's introduction is missing, as he describes Gracie very touchingly, "She's come home for us tonight." (If anyone has the full 1978 RVP, then please let me know). Three members of the Dame Gracie Fields Appreciation Society --Shaun Hewitt, Chris Webster and myself were granted special access recently to view Gracie's iconic 1978 dress in person, and what a privilege it was too! --Some photos show this at the end of the video. It's great to see Gracie's fellow artists in awe of her --look at Rula Lenska, for example. And of course, Max Bygraves sings the opening bar of 'Sally' too early and Danny La Rue's over the top laughter. Check out my other Gracie Fields and Elaine Paige uploads, and join 'The Dame Gracie Fields Appreciation Society'.

Rare clip of Gracie Fields on Arthur Askey's 'This Is Your Life' -1974
A recently discovered clip of Gracie Fields paying tribute to the great entertainer 'Arthur Askey' on Christmas Day, 1974. Gracie, then aged 76, talks about her time in France with Arthur as members of ENSA. She doesn't mention in this edition going for lunch with Maurice Chevalier here, but when she told the story on 'Arthur's 70th Birthday' in 1970, she discusses dining with Chevalier -and even sings a version of Arthur's 'I'm A Busy Bee'! Many thanks to Tony Lee of www.bigredbook.info for this video clip, and the other clip of Gracie with Alberto Semprini. Check out his website and Facebook page, it is a great, ever-growing resource of one of TV's longest running entertainment programmes. The audio MAY be out of sync with the video. This is a problem occured during the transfer of the film to Windows Movie Maker, and is a problem I'm not sure how to get rid of. The original file is perfect though. Gracie Fields - Sally (medley 1932)
Born over a fish and chip shop owned by her grandmother in Molesworth Street, Rochdale, Lancashire, she made her first stage appearance as a child in 1905. Her two sisters, Edith and Betty, and brother, Tommy, all went on to appear on stage, but Gracie was the most successful. Her professional debut in variety took place at the Rochdale Hippodrome theatre in 1910 and she soon gave up her job in the local cotton mill. She met comedian Archie Pitt and they began working together. Pitt would come to serve as her manager and the two married in 1923. The two continued to tour Britain together until 1922 in the revue Mr Tower of London and Gracie came to major public notice when Mr Tower of London came to the West End. Her career rapidly accelerated from this point with straight dramatic performances and the beginning of a recording career. The late 1930s saw her popularity peak and she was given many honours: the Order of Officer Sister of St. John of Jerusalem (for charity work), the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) (for services to entertainment) in 1938, and the Freedom of the Borough of Rochdale. World War II was declared whilst she was recovering and Fields travelled to France to entertain the troops. In 1940, she married film director Monty Banks. She was forced to leave Britain for North America during the war. Although she continued to spend much of her time entertaining troops. Nevertheless, she performed many times for Allied troops, travelling as far as the ...

Gracie Fields Capri Cemetery
As it is nearly thirty years to the day when Gracie died, I thought I'd post this clip taken on a visit to Capri in 2002. The clip shows Gracie's final resting place in the non Roman Catholic cemetery, together with her husband Boris. The grave is/was well tended although it is not in a very quiet spot!
