Suarez Gold: Afro-Colombian miners defending their heritage
A Minority Rights Group International production by acclaimed Colombian filmmaker Hollman Morris. Afro-Colombians have been carrying out small-scale mining in Colombia's Cauca region since their ancestors settled there in 1637. Today their descendants continue to chip away at the red rock in search of gold, seeing it not only as a means for earning a modest living, but also as an activity deeply linked to their culture. Between 2002 and 2010, Colombia's government gave out 7500 mining exploration titles to national and foreign companies eager to exploit the country's precious resources. In the film we hear of the Afro-Colombian community of La Toma's brave, and sometimes deadly, struggle to prevent the invasion of mining companies and defend their ancestral livelihoods at all costs. The documentary will be premiered in Madrid, Spain, on 9 December. Visit www.minorityvoices.org for more information.

Dr. Bettina Ng'weno: Afro Colombian Citizenship Struggles: Separate or Equal Legal Standing?
Over the last two or three decades Afro-Colombians increasingly organized over issues of discrimination and marginalization. They have demanded equality and justice in a number of ways including in education, employment and land rights. A section of these demands have been in the form of claims to autonomy and to territory as ethnic groups under the rubric of Law 70 and the 1991 Constitution. Others in the form of civil rights as marginalized racial groups under the rubric of the 1991 constitution and constitutional court ruling T 422. In combination these legal structures include provisions for education, for representation and for collective territories. In the process of mobilization and recognition there is a divide between claims to equality within the law and claims to equality through separate laws. To put it another way, there is a divide between claims to civil rights and social justice on one hand and to autonomy on the other. In this moment of transforming states what do these claims mean for citizenship? I suggest that claims by Afro-Colombians profoundly challenge what it means to be a citizen in Colombia and further afield. Bettina Ng'weno is an Associate Professor of African American and African Studies at the University of California, Davis. Trained in anthropology and originally from Kenya, she conducts research on states and property in Latin America and Africa. She has recently published Turf Wars: Territory and Citizenship in the Contemporary State ...

Roundtable on Afro-Colombian Outreach: President Bush Participates (2007)
thefilmarchive.org March 11, 2007 Afro Colombians refers to Colombians of African ancestry, and the great impact they have had on Colombian culture. Notable Afro-Colombians include Colombian scientists like Raul Cuero, writers like Manuel Zapata Olivella and politicians: Piedad Córdoba, Paula Marcela Moreno Zapata, and Luis Gilberto Murillo, Miss Colombia 2001 winner and fashion model Vanessa Alexandra Mendoza Bustos, and Major League Baseball player Edgar Renteria. In the 1970s, there was a major influx of Afro Colombians into the urban areas in search of greater economic and social opportunities for their children. This led to an increase in the number of urban poor in the marginal areas of big cities like Cali, Medellín and Bogotá. Most Afro-Colombians are currently living in urban areas. Only around 25%, or 3 million people, are based in rural areas, compared to 75%, or 9 million people in urban zones. The 1991 Colombian Constitution gave them the right to collective ownership of traditional Pacific coastal lands and special cultural development protections. Critics argue that this important legal instrument has not been enough to completely address their social and developmental needs. Available estimates range from 4.4 to 10.5 million Afro-Colombians. Afro-Colombians make up approximately 21% (9154537) of the population according to a projection of the National Administration Department of Statistics (DANE), most of whom are concentrated on the northwest Caribbean ...

Afro Colombian Mural in Washington DC - interview with artst Joel Bergner
Inauguration of the Afro Colombian Mural last Saturday September 12, 2009 in Washington, DC. Located at the 1300 block of historical U Street NW, this mural has been painted by DC based artist Joel Bergner, who dedicated this mural to the culture and the hopes of the Afro Colombian displaced people living in the DC area. More than 4.5 million Colombians have been displaced in the last few years -mostly Afro Colombians and Indigenous peoples- by the government of Colombia, and as a result of the internal violence of that country. Colombia is the biggest recipient of military aid from the US after Israel. Carlos in DC blog .
