Disaster risk reduction
Every year, on the second Wednesday of October, the world marks the International Day for Risk Reduction. Reducing disaster risk is a priority for the International Federation. We believe that by tackling vulnerability we can significantly reduce the risk of disaster and we can build safer and more resilient communtities. We do this through a combination of disaster preparedness and community-led mitigation measures. More information: www.ifrc.org Year: 2009 Duration: 3 minutes 12 seconds

Francis Ghesquiere speaks on Disaster Risk Reduction
Francis Ghesquiere, manager of the World Bank's Disaster Risk Management Practice Group and Head of the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) Secretariat, visited AusAID, Canberra on Thursday 27 September. Mr Ghesquiere shared his experience of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction (DRR) in different country and regional contexts and explained its place in the current debate on how to build resilience to natural hazards and other shocks. He also discussed other trends in the DRR space such as risk modelling, disaster risk financing and links to social protection. GFDRR is active in many countries of key interest to the Australian aid program: Indonesia, Vanuatu, the Philippines, Mongolia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Horn of Africa and West Africa, and the Caribbean and Latin America. It is now developing an Islamic strategy that will see its resources and operations expand in the Muslim world.

Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia Pacific
For more information: www.ifrc.org Asia Pacific is the most disaster prone region of the world , suffering on average, 40% of global disasters each year. For decades, the IFRC has been working with Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies and hazard prone communities on disaster risk reduction projects. This film explores the scope of these interventions. It includes vulnerability capacity and assessment training in Sri-Lanka, disaster simulations in Indonesia and mangrove reforestation in Vietnam. The video is also a call to action to governments to invest more in disaster risk reduction and to enact legislation and policies that supports risk reduction efforts at the local level.

Tackling Disasters One Rhyme at a Time
An innovative Disaster Risk Management program developed by Caritas Australia has armed some of the most vulnerable people in our region with nursery rhymes and simple actions to minimise the damage in this year's cyclone season. The South Pacific cyclone season runs from November to April each year and sees our region exposed to more cyclones and floods throughout this period. Caritas Australia's Disaster Risk Management project in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu has a primary aim of getting the most vulnerable people in disasters, young children, to safety as quickly as possible. Children are taught nursery rhymes with accompanying actions that contain memorable and simple emergency response information. The video shows the children performing the rhymes and actions and interviews Jennifer Enriko, Teacher at Bubumala Early Childhood Centre, West Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. This video footage forms part of our educational DVD to train teachers across the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. A project that was funded by AusAID to help extend the reach of this Disaster Risk Management program.

EU Development Days 2012: Disaster Risk Reduction in the Age of Climate Change
On 16-17 October Brussels (Belgium) hosted the 7th edition of the European Development Days (#EDD12). "Disaster Risk Reduction in the Age of Climate Change" was one of the High Level Panels (HLPs) which were being held. Climate change has sparked a dramatic rise in natural disasters around the world, with over-population, unplanned urbanisation and poor development policy all fuelling the problem. The HLP, which was organised by the European Commission, European Community Humanitarian Office -- ECHO, European Network of Political Foundations -- ENOP, Red Cross / EU Office -- RC EU, delved into the importance of strengthening resilience to disasters by linking relief, rehabilitation and development. Organised by the European Commission, the EDD is Europe's premier forum on international affairs and development cooperation. The EDD is a policy-making laboratory for practitioners from the field and decision-makers to share their experience and generate new ideas. The forum is a truly collaborative platform where everybody has a say. Join us on: www.facebook.com www.twitter.com #EDD12 Follow our latest updates: www.eudevdays.eu

"Act Now. Save Later" Campaign: International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which falls on the 13th of October every year, UNDP Lebanon, "Strengthening Disaster Risk Management Capacities in Lebanon" project, is broadcasting this short movie at the cinemas across Lebanon during the month of October. This social media campaign launched by two United Nations bodies calls on member states to boost funding for disaster preparedness in order to significantly reduce the often devastating economic impact that floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters have particularly on developing nations. The Act Now, Save Later campaign-- a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-HQ) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) -- sheds light the exorbitant cost of recovery assistance following natural disasters, and urges wealthy nations to spend now in order to save later. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the stark economic and human costs of natural disasters. Not only have natural disasters killed more than a million people and affected over a quarter of the global population since 2000; they have also cost the world upwards of US$1 trillion.

Community People are Trained for Disaster Risk Reduction for Safer Environment
Armenia -- A disaster risk reduction training session, conducted by World Vision Armenia, was held in Aragats community in cooperation with Ministry of Emergency Affairs, along with Aragats Community Administration to educate community members about how to act in the event of an emergency as well as the process of risk reduction. The residents of Aragats community face the same disasters as a result of bi-annual floods. They often find themselves hastily trying to protect their homes and save their animals from the floodwaters -- a common problem in this area. "Each year we face the same problem, the same issue," says Colonel Shamiryan, head of the emergency department of Aragatsotn Marz. "The melting waters from mountains reverberate in spring time and heavy rains on Autumn time result in the increased water flow which becomes greater and greater and often goes off-track, ruining the dams and causing flash floods in the village." "We should be aware of and prepared for the disasters," adds Gagik Poghosyan, the leader of Aragats community. "Clean-up works in storm-sewers should be incessant work. We should start learning today to act tomorrow." "World Vision Armenia trains people to be prepared for disasters which can help them have less loss. The team members are from Ministry of Emergency Affairs, from World Vision Armenia staff, as well as main the community members, who help us to determine the area's vulnerabilities and capacities, as well as monitor the risks and ...

Disaster Risk Reduction in Nepal
Nepal is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. In partnership with the Asian Development Bank, AusAID provides technical assistance to the Government of Nepal to retrofit schools to make them earthquake resistant. Proofing schools against earthquakes and other disasters has the additional benefit of these buildings being available for community shelter and coordination during a crisis.
