Since independence, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with the People's Republic of China. The HAL Tejas is a lightweight multirole fighter developed by India. It is a tailless, compound delta-wing design powered by a single engine. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21 fighters. Later the LCA was officially named "Tejas", meaning "Radiance" by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Tejas has the delta wing configuration, with no tailplanes or foreplanes, and features a single vertical fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, advanced digital cockpit, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, advanced composite material structures and a flat rated engine. IAF targets Gaza Cells

On Monday, Two Palestinian terrorists were killed when Israeli aircrafts targeted a rocket-launching cell in northern Gaza. Several hours after the Air Force struck, rockets were fired at the Ashkelon area as air raid sirens sounded in the region. Early Tuesday, the IDF detected the launching of four rockets, which apparently hit open areas south of Ashkelon. The Air Force fired at a Palestinian terror cell as its members were attempting to plant an explosive device near the central Gaza Strip border fence. The army said the attack target was hit and that the IDF would not tolerate any bid to harm the State of Israel's citizens and would continue to operate against any element that utilized terror against the State of Israel. No injuries or damage were reported.

Indian air force to get heavy lifter Chinook Helicopter

US defence major Boeing has won the deal to supply 15 heavy-lift helicopters to the Indian Air Force defeating its rival Russian Mi-26 in the tender expected to be worth around one billion dollars.The Chinook CH47D has emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender and would be offered the deal to supply 15 of these helicopters to the IAF. The Ministry will now hold commercial negotiations with the US firm to determine the price and finalise the procurement. According to Indian defence procurement procedures, the firm emerging as the lowest bidder in the contract and fulfilling all the requirements of the tender is awarded the contract. The IAF will use these helicopters to supply heavy-duty equipment in the higher reaches in the northern and northeastern states and will replace the existing fleet of Mi-26 choppers acquired by it in the Soviet era. In this contract, the IAF determined the lowest bidder by taking into account the cost of operating the chopper through out its life span of 30 years.

On the 80th anniversary of the Indian Air Force and the show of the force's might was on display. The vintage 1930s Tiger Moth biplane joined the flying display team for the event. The aerobatic display by the Suryakiran planes and Sarang helicopter squad was missing this year. The Suryakirans are being as those planes are now being used for training rookie pilots. The Air Chief NAK Browne said the IAF is in the process of raising a new aerobatic display team with Advanced Jet Trainer 'Hawk' aircraft.
