SOAS Academic Shirin Akiner is Uzbekistan Regime Agent
Lecturer in Central Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, Dr Shirin Akiner has been condemned by human rights groups, liberty campaigners and Craig Murray (ex-UK Ambassador in Tashkent) as an apologist for brutal Uzbek dictator President Karimov. This short report on the Andijan massacre concludes with an interview with Dr Akiner in which she attempts to downplay and justify the horrific murders by Karimov's regime. In late 2005, shortly after this video was first broadcast, complaints against Akiner flooded in to the then Director of SOAS, Colin Bundy. Mr Bundy, to the outrage of many, publicly defended Akiner in her justification of the massacre of the peaceful Uzbekistan opposition. SOAS continues to employ Akiner in a prominent role, whilst mainstream British broadcast media outlets appear to have decided to no longer invite her to comment on Central Asian affairs. Viewers may wish to complain to her present boss: Professor Paul Webley, Director and Principal of SOAS Email Address: pw2@soas.ac.uk Telephone: +44 207 898 4014 Fax: +44 207 898 4019 A further interview with Akiner may also be of interest: www.youtube.com

Stephen Chan, School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London (7 November 2011)
Stephen Chan OBE, Professor of International Relations at the School of Oriental & African Studies at the University of London, gave the "Third Hans Singer Memorial Lecture on Global Development" on 7 November 2011 at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in Bonn. He answered the following questions in his interview: - In your Hans Singer Memorial Lecture "Mercy and the Structures of the World", you propose the imagination of a moral universe. What does this really mean and how does it relate to the Singer-Prebisch thesis, which states, that rich countries which deal in manufactures are winning over those, dependent on unprocessed commodities. - Your model of a moral universe comprises various elements -- meaning philosophies, religion and political beliefs -- which struggle for dominance. In your view, does this automatically lead to a violent clash of civilizations as Samuel Huntington has suggested? - As our world becomes ever more globalized, the need for international cooperation is growing rapidly. What are promising principles of global cooperation which could bridge cultural divisions and facilitate effective problem-solving?

Alan Watts - Love Of Wisdom - 1969 Lecture
Alan Watts was born in London in January of 1915 at the start of the first World War. At a young age he became fascinated with the arts of the Far East, and by the time he was ten or eleven he began to read thriller stories by Sax Rohmer about about mysterious Oriental villains. This interest led him in turn to the works of Lafcadio Hern, Christmas Humphreys, and DT Suzuki, and by fourteen was writing on Eastern themes, and was published in the Journal of the London Buddhist Lodge before producing his first booklet on Zen in 1932. He moved to New York in 1938 and then to Chicago where he served as an Episcopal priest for six years before leaving the Church. In 1950 he moved to upstate New York, and in late 1950 visited with Joseph Campbell and, composer John Cage, and Luisa Commaraswamy at his Millbrook farmhouse. Then in 1951 at the invitation of Frederic Spiegelberg he moved to San Francisco to teach at the Academy of Asian Studies. Worldview Alan Watts was profoundly influenced by the East Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Buddhism, and by Taoist thought, which is reflected in Zen poetry and the arts of China and Japan. After leaving the Church he never became a member of another organized religion, although he wrote and spoke extensively about Zen Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoisim. Some American Buddhists criticized him for not sitting regularly in zazen, even though he recorded several guided meditations teaching a variety of mediation techniques. Alan Watts responded ...

So You Want to Study at SOAS
Full disclosure: I am two exams away from graduating next month with a BA in Politics and Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies. The experiences alluded to in this clip are all things that have actually happened to some of my wonderful friends in the past three years. Happy graduation! Funny to think we were all this adamantly idealistic once. SOAS, I love you anyway. -Lily twitter.com facebook.com paintedlily.tumblr.com
