Firefight in Afghanistan's Arghendab valley Camp Nolan Sept 10 2010.
Story US soldiers cleared a suspected arms cache in Afghanistan's Arghandab valley on Friday (September 10) before coming under fire when they returned to their base. Soldiers from the 101st Airborne patrolled an orchard near their Outpost Nolan base, with the assistance of a trained dog and metal detectors, and destroyed an arms cache at the site. The Arghandab river valley is an important infiltration route used by the Taliban to attack US forces and smuggle weapons and men a few miles east to Kandahar city. US troops have launched a series of operations in Arghandab and other districts around Kandahar in a bid to drive the insurgents out of their spiritual heartland. The militants in Arghandab, however, are tying up a brigade of US troops with mines and hit-and-run attacks launched from thick cover in ripening grape and pomegranate plantations. The area is the birthplace of the Taliban and insurgents have taken a heavy toll on US soldiers in outlying combat bases, with many maimed by buried mines and bombs, and several armoured vehicles destroyed. The soldiers later came under fire at their camp and entered a firefight with gunmen positioned in the mountains.

US casualties on rise in Afghan war
On Saturday four US soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Southern Afghanistan. The deaths bring to 396 the toll of foreign soldiers killed so far this year, compared to 520 for all of 2009. The icasualties.org website puts the number of soldiers to have died since the Afghan insurgency began in 2001 at 1964, with 1204 of them Americans. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher has been on patrol with US troops in the Arghandab river valley, used by the Taliban to stage attacks in neighbouring Kandahar. He reports on the perseverance of the 82nd Airborne Division soldiers.

Ability of Afghan police questioned
Afghan security forces are valued by foreign forces for their local knowledge, but there is also widespread evidence of drug use, corruption and desertion among them. Despite a $27 billion international investment programme, in many cases, the Afghan National Police remain unfit for duty. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher is embedded with US soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, which is patrolling with their counterparts from the local police force. He sent this report from the Arghandab River Valley.

Fierce fighting in Afghanistan's Arghandab Valley
US and Afghan soldiers have launched a series of raids against the Taliban in the Arghandab Valley in southeastern Afghanistan. With the American soldiers being ill-prepared for the kind of war the Taliban is fighting, attempts to defeat the enemy have not yet been successful. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher reports from southern Afghanistan.
