Privatized Prisons and Prison Labor IS Slavery
American Drug War - The Last White Hope a film by Kevin Booth John O'Neill Project Part 15: The Mother of All Conspiracies - The Global Drug Trade In this project, I will post supporting documentation for all of the points made in the movie, Who Killed John O'Neill. Below is a list of all of the clips from that movie with all of the parts from Part 15: The Mother of All Conspiracies - The Global Drug Trade. For Part 15, I used the 2007 Documentary by Kevin Booth, American Drug War - The Last White Hope. One can conclude from this documentary that the quagmire known as the War on Drugs has only created more problems than solutions, more addiction than recovery, and more drugs and gangs in society. I am so outraged about the drug war, that I am willing to devote my entire life to fighting it. So if there is someone out there that needs a soldier in the war against the war on drugs, contact me. A note about the titles in this series: I tried to maintain a system of naming clips according to their individual points made. If I failed to do so, it is only because the inconclussive nature of taking a clip out of the context of the entire film, and I appologize. 01 who was john o'neil 02 CIA Created Islamic Fundamentalism 03 Al Qaeda was an Intelligence Ops from the Start 04 ISI + CIA = The Death of Daniel Pearl 05 In a Post 911 World - You Cannot Trust Anybody 06 Wasting your Life with these Conspiracy Theories 07 Further Investigation into 911 is Required 08 Controlled ...

ALEC Exposed - Prison Labor
90 Second Summaries: Season 2, Episode 21 Spotlight on the States: The Prison Industries Act ALEC model legislation -- introduced nationally in 1995; updated in 2004 Watch this episode of 90 Second Summaries at bit.ly Status: According to the Bureau of Justice Assistance, 37 states and four other jurisdictions have certified PIE programs in place. As of 6/30/2010, 30 of those programs were active. Purpose: Congress created the Prison Industry Enhancement Certification Program (PIECP) with the Justice System Improvement Act of 1979. This program was designed to "establish employment opportunities for inmates that approximate private sector work opportunities", thereby helping them gain skills to find work upon release. PIE provided both a cheap source of labor to participating private companies and an effective way for prison administrators to keep inmates busy while helping defray their cost to the state, but was scantily used by the states until the advent of the Prison Industries Act. For years, the use of prison labor by private companies had been legally barred to prevent unfair competition. Summary: Originally crafted in 1993 by Texas State Rep. Ray Allen, the Prison Industries Act is designed to better incentivize use of prison labor by private companies and more effectively enrich these companies. The PIE program stipulates that inmates must be paid a prevailing market wage, although up to 80 percent of that wage (after taxes) can be diverted to the state to offset ...

GOOD-Prison labor: Made in USA- 1/3
Prison Labor: Made in the USA Prison labor is every US Corporation's dream: cheap labor, no sick leave, no time off, no holidays and employees that can be easily replaced. For human rights activists however, it's a nightmare for the very same reasons - but on the other side of the coin: forced labor, no unions, low pay and no protection for employees. The US has used or currently uses prison labor for anything from holiday coffee for Starbucks, cutting airplane components for Boeing, Game Boys for Nintendo, equipment for the war in Iraq, shrink wrapping mousses for Microsoft, making dentures, down to sewing lingerie for Victoria's Secrets. It's a multi-billion dollar business. Today, FSRN brings you an exclusive documentary, Prison Labor, Made in the USA, with reporter Karen Miller.

Inveraray Jail - Penal Labour
Ali first displays how the crank machine works, this is part of some penal labour meant for the prisoners. "Penal labour or penal servitude is a form of unfree labour. The term may refer to several related situations: labour as a form of punishment, the prison system used as a means to secure labour, and labour as a form of occupation of convicts" My brother then comes along with his Daughter to have a good go at it!

Chinese prison labor in manufacturing surgical towels for US companies
The basically free prison labor is utilized in manufacturing surgical towels for US companies, such Medline, Cardinal and A Plus. The same practice also happens in apparel industry. One set of Nautica shirt and pant is priced at 4 dollar to Nautica via a middle company in China. A normal Chinese manufacturer can't make it happen. It was made in Chinese prison with basically free labor. It's illegal! It's illegal to import prison-made products into the US

'Chasm of Sorrow' Anton Chekhov and Sakhalin Island
Chekhov’s single largest work is not a play or a collection of short stories, but an account of the most notorious penal colony in Tsarist Russia. In 1890, aged 30, coughing the tubercular blood he knew would kill him; he travelled for 3 months, across Russia and beyond Siberia to the penal island of Sakhalin. Once there, he collected data from 10,000 prisoners, exiles, prison officers and governors. Sakhalin was used for long term, hard labour convicts who, once their sentence was served, were never allowed back into Russia. Often wives and children would follow. Chekhov’s account is poetic in its description of the island, frequently humorous and biting, but as one would expect, forensic and dispassionate in describing conditions on the colony and the dehumanizing effects of its brutality, cruelty and depravation.
The book is a documentary, travel book, census, sociological and medical study, polemic, and a work of literary genius, full of human detail, appalling vignettes and scientific analysis.. He describes the incidence of diseases; TB, syphilis, diphtheria, scurvy, progressive paralysis and marasmus, domestic violence and suicide. A son of a convict, Dmitry Gerof, later joined Scott’s Antarctic expedition and was one of the men that found the frozen bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers. The aim of this project is to take us back to Sakhalin, to gain new insights into one of the greatest writers in literature. Sakhalin consumed years of his short career and probably reduced his lifespan. As he explores how depravity corrupts all exposed to it, we begin to understand his motivation and how Sakhalin informed his other, more famous, work.
Chasm of Sorrow is supported by The Wellcome Trust and is a collaboration between Artist Andrew Dawson, neuroscientist Jonathan Cole, Marius Turda, a medical historian and Chekhov’s biographer, Donald Rayfield with the support of the Bristol Old Vic theatre.
The project will culminate in a theatrical workshop looking at a dramatic adaptation of the book. This, and an accompanying exhibition, will explore Chekhov’s relevance today as pioneering epidemiologist and biomedical historian, and how his experience in this penal colony influenced his subsequent, more famous, literary output.
