EN - PES Congress - MEP Tanja Fajon (S&D;, SI ; LIBE Committee) introduces debate on Migration EU: "What kind of migration policy is necessary?" - Workshop: "Challenges for Social Democracy in XXI Century" - 22.08.2015 - Budapest, Hungary. Tanja Tajon: "This new distribution key, it's not a problem of Greece or Italy, or the other countries: we have to show solidarity. And the first step is to help people not to die, to bear in mind that these are refugees of war and violence, escaping their homes, maybe having completely a life of dignity and families, and they lost their dignity. And I think many leaders, political elites or others, even our citizens, are not aware that we are trying to save people lives. And this is first thing: we should not build a Fortress Europe, we should leave the door open. And Socialists and Democrats are in the forefront in this war in the European Parliament, to talk about solidarity and help. And we are supporting the initiative of the European Commission, but I am seriously concerned that in view of our experience and of the reluctance of the European governments I don't think that much will happen in the end. And this is where Europe can really ... it's a shame ! It's really a shame. And this is a thing, legal and safe way, policy proposal you said. And let's not see migration as a problem, but as a solution. In Slovenia, we had after the Balkan Wars 50-60,000 refugees, and we had no problem at that time to resettle them or to take them. Today we are discussing about 700 people, and people are discussing about terrorists, "Who is coming to our countries?", it's a fear ! Who is a refugee ? Who is this person that will come and take our jobs ? It is a very critical discussion, but we have to talk with people, to kill the fears, not to connect the migrant crisis with the terrorism. This is very dangerous. People who are coming are coming through the Mediterranean ; there, I don't think that the chance that there would be a terrorist, we should not make this connection. So, another thong is what is happening as well is human trafficking, it's a big issue. But we should not address human trafficking with military dimension. I don't think this is a solution, because we will just destabilise the region, we will maybe even harm the refugees. (...° At the end of the day, it's political courage, and I sincerely hope that our governments or our political leaders, Socialists and Democrats, will really, very sincerely work to help people in need. This is really something that should be in the forefront in the discussions, in the long term of course, to address all the issues that people seem they don't have reasons to address.
