Although PLOS and others have shown that open access publishing is financially sustainable, we continue to seek financial support from donors and granting agencies to further our organization’s broader mission to lead a transformation in research communication. Current projects at PLOS are supported by grants and gifts from the William K. Bowes, Jr. Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Financial support also enables PLOS to fuel OA advocacy through institutional outreach and events such as Open Access Week. These gifts also fund innovation and partnerships, an important part of the PLOS mission as the rapid rise of OA research drives the need for online tools to harness, process, and build on this knowledge.
In addition, PLOS relies on the continued support of the broader research community, patient advocacy organizations, the librarian community, policy makers, and more.
Even today, only a small percentage of the scientific, technical, and medical (STM) literature is available via OA. Reaping the global benefits of OA requires an ongoing commitment by leading researchers to publish their work in OA journals – and equally dedicated scientists to review the increasing number of submissions. Since 2000, PLOS and its advocacy partners have made great strides toward gaining global acceptance of OA. However, there is still a good deal of work to do before we realize the full potential of comprehensive OA.
