This selection tends to be on the hot side but finishes with a beautifully played waltz by four top musicians directed by Van Phillips. Ray Starita's version of "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" was apparently short-lived in the Columbia catalogue and a version by Debroy Somers was substituted and released using the same catalogue number.

From 3rd September 1939 radio (or "the wireless") became a vital source of news and entertainment for the British public and armed forces. Dance bands continued to broadcast boosting morale and adapting to wartime conditions despite occasional shortages of available musicians. Here is a handful of recordings that illustrate just how good and varied these bands could be and how they retained an individual sound and didn't simply adopt a "Glenn Miller style" overnight. Put Your Arms... also proves that Van Phillips really could swing! Please note that I'm always looking for Van Phillips material so if you have anything - please do get in touch.
Most of these recordings come from ENSA / ORBS discs or BBC transcriptions. I've done the best I can with sound quality which varies from "rough" to pretty good. The Van Phillips is fairly distorted and My Heart Stood Still has a bad swish, is cracked and even has a piece missing out of the edge of the record so I had to rebuild the opening notes - quite a challenge! It was far too nice to miss out however. I hope you enjoy them.

British dance band is a genre of popular jazz and dance music that developed in British dance halls and hotel ballrooms during the 1920s and 1930s, often called a Golden Age of British music prior to World War II.
Thousands of miles away from the true origins of jazz in the United States, British dance bands of this era typically played melodic, good-time music that had jazz and big band influences but also maintained a peculiarly British sense of rhythm and style which came from the music hall tradition. Often comedians of the day or music hall personalities would sing novelty recordings backed by well-known British dance band leaders. Some of the British dance band leaders and musicians went on to fame in the United States in the swing era.

Many popular singers rose to fame as vocalists on recordings by the British dance bands. They are not always attributed on the record label, except for the description "with vocal refrain", but an experienced listener can usually identify the voices of these otherwise anonymous singers. From 3rd September 1939 radio (or "the wireless") became a vital source of news and entertainment for the British public and armed forces. Dance bands continued to broadcast boosting morale and adapting to wartime conditions despite occasional shortages of available musicians. Here is a handful of recordings that illustrate just how good and varied these bands could be and how they retained an individual sound and didn't simply adopt a "Glenn Miller style" overnight. Put Your Arms... also proves that Van Phillips really could swing! Please note that I'm always looking for Van Phillips material so if you have anything - please do get in touch. Most of these recordings come from ENSA / ORBS discs or BBC transcriptions. I've done the best I can with sound quality which varies from "rough" to pretty good. The Van Phillips is fairly distorted and My Heart Stood Still has a bad swish, is cracked and even has a piece missing out of the edge of the record so I had to rebuild the opening notes - quite a challenge! It was far too nice to miss out however. I hope you enjoy them. From 3rd September 1939 radio (or "the wireless") became a vital source of news and entertainment for the British public and armed forces. Dance bands continued...
From 3rd September 1939 radio (or "the wireless") became a vital source of news and entertainment for the British public and armed forces. Dance bands continued to broadcast boosting morale and adapting to wartime conditions despite occasional shortages of available musicians. Here is a handful of recordings that illustrate just how good and varied these bands could be and how they retained an individual sound and didn't simply adopt a "Glenn Miller style" overnight. Put Your Arms... also proves that Van Phillips really could swing! Please note that I'm always looking for Van Phillips material so if you have anything - please do get in touch.
Most of these recordings come from ENSA / ORBS discs or BBC transcriptions. I've done the best I can with sound quality which varies from "rough" to pretty good. The Van Phillips is fairly distorted and My Heart Stood Still has a bad swish, is cracked and even has a piece missing out of the edge of the record so I had to rebuild the opening notes - quite a challenge! It was far too nice to miss out however. I hope you enjoy them.

The Orpheans were the resident dance band at the Savoy from 1923 to 1927, and on and off thereafter throughout the 1930s. Unlike most British bands that played jazz early on, the Orpheans got it ... They also had that burnished British dance band bottom that resonates across the ages on otherwise tinny 78 records; a dual "brass bass" (tuba) -led rhythm section that vroomed like a 1927 Rolls Royce engine....
