Mysore Dasara 1968 (Original).mp4
Mysore Dasara 1968 (Original).mp4
The Dasara festivities were first started by the Vijayanagar Kings in 15th Century, after the fall of Vijayanagar Kingdom, The Wodeyar's of Mysore continued the Dasara Festival by, Raja Wodeyar I (1578-1617 CE) in the year 1610 at Srirangapatna. The Mysore Palace is lit up on all the 10 days of Dasara. The festivities begin with the Wodeyar royal couple performing a special puja to Goddess Chamundeshwari in the Chamundi Temple located on the top of Chamundi Hill at Mysore. This would be followed by a special durbar (royal assembly). It was during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in the year 1805, when the king started the tradition of having a special durbar in the Mysore Palace during Dasara; which was attended by members of the royal family, special invitees, officials and the masses. This tradition has been continued even now with the current scion of the Wodeyar family, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar holding a private durbar during Dasara. The ninth day of Dasara called as Mahanavami is also an auspicious day on which the royal sword is worshiped and is taken on a procession involving elephants, camels and horses

Private durbar at Mysore palace
Private durbar at Mysore palace
This is a rare video clip featuring the present scion of mysore royal family, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar ascending the golden throne of mysore in traditional attire amidst the ancient practice of announcing the arrival of the king to the court. Following this, Mr. Wadiyar received tributes from the courtiers and other members of the royal family, at the private amba vilas(durbar hall) of mysore palace, marking the symbolic and ceremonial beginning of the navratri festivities. Also Mr. Wadiyar offered special prayers to invoke the blessings of the almighty in the presence of other members of the royal family and family friends. A tradition inherited from the Vijayanagar kings, it was adopted by Raja Wadiyar, who ascended the throne in 1610. He decreed that the Vijayanagar rulers practice should continue to be held in all its pomp and glory. The tradition continues to this day, lending a royal touch to make the Mysore Dasara more alluring. Every year tradition and history gets unfolded when the scion of the Mysore royal family conducts the private durbar for nine days at the durbar hall of the Palace. The ritual is held daily, with the scion ready to ascend the precious jewel stone-studded golden throne. The golden throne weighs 450 kilo and is believed to be 4000 years old. It has passed on from Parikshith Maharaja to the Wadiyars changing different hands, including Vijayanagar kingdom. ***For more videos visit www.royalsplendourofmysore.com

An Homage to Sabu
An Homage to Sabu
Selar Shaik Sabu (often mistakenly called Sabu Dastagir) was born in 1924 in Karapur, Mysore, Kingdom of Mysore, then a Princely State of British India, Sabu was the son of an Indian mahout (elephant driver) and was discovered by documentary film-maker Robert Flaherty who cast him in the role of an elephant driver in the 1937 British film Elephant Boy, based on Toomai of the Elephants, a story by Rudyard Kipling. Sabu is perhaps best known for his role as Abu in the 1940 British film The Thief of Bagdad. In 1942 he once again played a role based on a Kipling story, namely Mowgli in Jungle Book directed by Zoltán Korda. After World War II, unable to secure the equivalent roles in Hollywood that British films had offered him, his career went into decline with rare gleams of glory, such as his supporting role in the classic British film Black Narcissus (1947). Family: Married 1) Bibi Ferreira, 1947 (divorced); 2) Marilyn Cooper, 1949; two children. Died: Chatsworth, California, 2 December 1963 of heart attack.
