Manali village, Himachal Pradesh, India.
From our trip around North India. October 2006. Manali is named after the Brahmin lawgiver Manu. The word Manali literally means "the abode of Manu". Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world. Manali is known as the "Valley of the Gods". The Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu. Manali, (alt. 1950 m or 6398 ft) in the Beas River valley, is an important hill station in the Himalayan mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India, near the northern end of the Kullu Valley. It is administratively a part of the Kullu District. The population is approx. 30000. The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and, from there, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin. Manali and its surrounding areas are of great significance to the Indian culture and heritage as it was the home and abode of the Saptarshi or seven sages. The ancient cave temple, Hidimba Devi Temple, is not far from town. Manali is a popular Himalayan tourist destination and accounts for nearly a quarter of all tourist arrivals in Himachal Pradesh. It is visited by many trekkers who follow the hashish trail. Manali's charas is considered to be the best in India. The valleys provide natural UV lights as fields are high up the mountain and high grade grows directly from the sunlight.ala. Manali's cool atmosphere provides a perfect haven for the ones afflicted by the hot ...

Dharamsala Himalayas: Himachal Pradesh, India
©2011. Darrin Lee 11/19/11-11/22/11 I published a story on skydiving five years ago nearly to the exact days of paragliding and hiking the Himalayas of the Dalai Lama's neighbourhood. Perched on the top of the hill, waiting for the go ahead to run off the face of the cliff, and breathing heavy, thin air reaching the summit of Mt. Triund- the opening quote to that story resonated over and over in my head. "For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward- for there you have been and there you will long to return." In retrospect, the first jump out of that plane and the resultant printing of Leonardo Da Vinci's quote embarked a significant focus of direction in my life, a fork in the road of sorts. I've always been a wanderer, disappearing from my parents for an hour in Disneyworld at age 7, but for the past five years I've been running, and flying, more than staying still. From pain, from pressure, from being pulled back down. It's an eerie feeling, familiarizing your own destiny. It's the life that chose you, not the other way around- A strange addiction of endless floating, ever-changing, diffused scenery. Funny thing about gravity, it truly can be selective. Some people are just not meant to remain grounded. The surface pull is weaker in those most fortunate. A hop... a skip... a jump... and up we go. -30-

Himachal Pradesh vote projection: Congress, BJP neck and neck
Himachal Pradesh has traditionally seen a straight contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress and the 2012 Assembly election are going to be no different with the two involved in a bitter battle. The state will vote in a single phase on November 4, and the counting of the votes will take place weeks later, on December 20 along with Gujarat. Even though the final seat tally in the 68-member state Assembly will be known only then, a pre-poll survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) for CNN-IBN shows that it will be a very close contest between the BJP and Congress, with 41 per cent of votes going to the BJP and 40 per cent to the Congress. So, although the BJP is a nose ahead of the Congress in terms of vote-share, its share has dropped from 2007, when the party won 41 seats in the 68-member state Assembly. The Congress ended with only 19 seats, although it had been the dominant party in the previous twenty years.

Masroor - Monolithic Rock Cut Temples, Himachal Pradesh, India
The rock cut temples at Masroor, Himachal Pradesh. The temples were made in the era of the Mahabharata. They are cut out of a single rock with intricately chiseled figurines adorning the walls and elaborate stairways and passages weave through the complex. It includes a "Sarovar" or pond with thousands of fish that go berserk when offered cheese-crackers. The temple is not frequented by too many tourists because of its location but it isn't worth missing due to its eerie Indiana Jones look and archaeological value. And the crazy fish are worth mentioning too.

Sethukarnan's Himachal Pradesh Tour-Dharamshala, Kangra & Jwalamukhi-10 April 2009.wmv
The Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh is one of the most picturesque valleys of lower and western Himalayas with history dating back to ancient Vedic times of more than 3500 years. The Beas River contributes to the fertility of land in the district. The famous temple of goddess Chamunda Devi in Dadh Palampur is located just 24 km from Kangra and 15 km from Dharamshala. Behind the temple is a cave-like scoop where a stone "Lingam" under a boulder represents Nandikeshwar (Shiva). The temple complex is an enchanting spot with glorious view of Dhauladhar, the Baner Khad and Dadh. A vast running water pool houses the statues of Lord Shiva and Saraswathi. The arrival of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and thousands of refugees to Dharamshala in 1959 made Mcleodganj a major Buddhist centre of pilgrimage and learning. Situated towards the southern end of the town is the holy abode of the Tibetan leader, Dalai Lama, the Tsuglagkhang Complex. Namgyal Monastery is a part of this sanctum and thousands of pilgrims' travel here seeking the blessings of the leader. Bhagsu Nag Temple, located 1 km from McLeod Ganj, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Bhagsu Nag, the snake god, and to Lord Shiva. In the middle of the town of Kangra is the temple dedicated to Bajreshwari Devi. It is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. Known once for its legendary wealth this temple was subject to successive depredations by invaders from the north. Destroyed completely in 1905 by an earthquake, it ...

Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls: First electoral battle between Cong, BJP after reforms
The Himachal Pradesh 2012 Assembly elections began at 8 am on Sunday. A total of 459 candidates are in the fray for the 68-member Assembly. The election is important as it's the first after the recent reforms unleashed by the Centre, that included the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders and 51 per cent FDI in retail. Political heavyweights, incumbent CM Prem Kumar Dhumal of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Virbhadra Singh of the Congress, are jostling for the voters' attention. Both the parties have not left any stone unturned for the contest with the biggest names from both hitting the campaign trail. While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi campaigned for the Congress in the state, the BJP was represented by senior leaders like LK Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley.
