It became the first Indian film to gain western recognition, after it won the the Palme d'Or (Best Film) award, then known as 'Grand Prix', at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946 But while Pather Panchali and other Ray films have continued to win acclaim at home and abroad - more abroad than home - Neecha Nagar, made during the last phase of the freedom movement (1945-46) with all the restrictions the British could enforce, was never released commercially in India. The film carries the impact of that era's turmoil of a people in the throes of the independence movement. A Gandhi cap-wearing protagonist and his charkha wielding friend were subtle touches that escaped the British censors. Socialism was very much the flavour and Chetan Anand and his group were part of the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), a prominent left-leaning cultural outfit. This film was based on a Hindi story, Neecha Nagar, written by Hayatulla Ansari, which in turn was inspired by Russian writer, Maxim Gorky's 'Lower Depths' and it took an expressionist look at the gulf between the rich and poor in the society. The film depicted the sufferings and struggles of Neecha Nagar against a tyrant who diverts water supply to make profits and then opens a hospital to nurse those stricken by consuming contaminated water. It had Zohra Segal, who at 100 still continues to regale the cinegoer with her 'youthful' presence in many a Bollywood film even today (Saawariya 2008). The film's heroine is Chetan Anand's wife, Uma Anand (debut starring role), It is also the debut film of actress Kamini Kaushal and debut for Ravi Shankar as a music director. Chetan Anand directs this Indian Peoples' Theatre Association-funded, expressionist look at social injustice in rural India. The film centers on a fantastically wealthy and capacious landlord who lives in a palatial estate high up on a mountain while the poor toil and starve in the valley below. The villagers' hatred for the landlord is inflamed further by the fact that his sewage is dumped directly into the village -- spreading a variety of diseases. Fortunately, the landlord dies a terrifically painful death thanks to a drawn out series of heart attacks. MOVIE AWARDS for 'Neecha Nagar' Chetan Anand won the Palme d'Or (Best Film) award, at CANNES for this realistic and origonal debut,he went onto make memorable fare-guide, 'Akri Khat; 'Kudrat' 'Heeranja' and 'Hanste Zakhm' but could not win the international critical acclaim he got for this potrayal of destitution and social deprivation of rural india which shows fiscal and social exploitation of the rural peasants by the local aristocracy in a milestone in indian cinema,a truly visionary film-maker who remains truly under-rated by both the west and the east.
