Celebrating Lanarkshire 2013
Celebrating Lanarkshire is a rallying call for community groups, schools, churches, the media, businesses and everyone who loves and takes pride in Lanarkshire to make 2013 a very special year. Next February's bi-centenary of David Livingstone, one of our most famous sons, has prompted the initiative to highlight the County's achievements and milestones over the past 200 years. Civic pride organisation New Lanarkshire Limited has joined forces with both North and South Lanarkshire Councils to promote the Creative Scotland backed celebration of Lanarkshire, its people and places, past and present.

International Workers Memorial Day 2012 in South Lanarkshire
International Workers Memorial Day is observed on 28 April each year and commemorates workers who have died, been injured or made by their work. Outside South Lanarkshire Council workers gather to show their respects and commitment to campaign to protect workers both now and in the future. This year the Joint Trades Union Council held an event about Stress in the Work Place to raise awareness of the dangers of stress and key speakers from the Council and NHS Lanarkshire spoke about the ongoing work, policies and assistance available to tackle it.

Abandoned 16th century "House/Castle" ---- South Lanarkshire, Scotland
Georgian country house built around the nucleus of a simple square keep of c.1500. The tall crowstep-gabled wings to the east and west were added in 1673. The bow-fronted elevation to the south was added in the 18th century and completely encases the original keep on that side. The Scottish Baronial additions to the west date to 1851 and are by David Bryce. The original keep is now only visible along its north front and a little of its east side. It is in coursed and harled rubble and rises through 3 storeys to a crenellated parapet borne on corbels. A gabled garret storey sits above. The first floor string course continues along the 17th century wing to the east.

North Lanarkshire Connections Project
North Lanarkshire Connections is a project that VANL delivers in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council Social Work Department, Bazooka Arts and LEAF. VANL's main involvement in the project involves developing and promoting 'Timebank' volunteering to support vulnerable people in the North Lanarkshire area. The project is supported by the Big Lottery Fund over a five year period. What is a Timebank? A Timebank is a way for people to share skills with others in their community and be rewarded for it -- in time. For every hour of time you give providing a service for another participant, you receive one "time credit". What can you do with your time credits? You can exchange your time credits when you need a service for someone else. You can give them to a member of your family who needs some help, or you can save them to use in future. Who can receive time credits? Anyone can participate and become involved in Timebank volunteering. Young people can share know how in whatever interests them, the elderly and housebound can cook for events or make friendly calls. Age, ability, lack of finance, or limited mobility are no barriers to becoming a 'Timebank' volunteer with the North Lanarkshire Connections project. What type of volunteering is involved in Timebank? Here are just some of the types of volunteering services people give and receive as part of Time Banking: Shopping Sports Pet Care Gardening Listening Home Visits Cleaning Ironing Car Washing Cooking Computing ...

Champions for Change launches in South Lanarkshire
Champions for Change is Scotland's first Accreditation Award Scheme set up by the charity Nil by Mouth to challenge sectarianism in schools. It was launched at Stonelaw High school where primary and secondary schools in the Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Larkhall learning communities contributed to the event. Pupils read extracts, performed songs and dramas and watched films about the problems bigotry and ignorance bring but also highlighted some of the anti sectarian work already taking place in South Lanarkshire's schools.
