euronews business planet - Venture capital, a risky business?
www.euronews.com Business planet is in Copenhagen to look at venture capital. An alternative to more traditional modes of financing, venture capital funds help companies through the critical start up stages of business. In Denmark, for example, Fluxome, has benefited through venture capital and from European funds. It is now a key player in its field. Developing nutritional supplements on the nutraceuticals market requires huge investments. Fluxome, based in the suburbs of Copenhagen has been up and running since 2002. It received six million euros in its first wave of venture capital in 2006. This funding paved the way for it to bring products to market three years later. Venture capital is usually given to innovative SMEs (small and medium sized firms) in the early stages of development but is also helps business' to expand. Fluxome has received 23 million euros in venture capital over the last ten years. A cash injection which has enabled it to develop business internationally. Its first product is currently being evaluated in the US by 30 of the country's largest nutritional supplement companies. Jarne Elleholm, Chairman of Fluxome explains how venture capital has benefited Fluxome: "So you need money, as well as the good idea, to bring it all the way through. Without that they would not have been able to create a company which today has proven itself by launching its first product, has several more in the pipe-line, has 24 employees, and is selling. The European ...

We spent the first 45 minutes or so talking about industry trends (in this order): 1. The history and background of True Ventures, one of my favorite early-stage VC's (and the one with whom Om is a venture partner) 2. The strategy of GigaOm and where they differentiate in the market 3. Venture Capital funds: the different between "closed funds" (which typically have a 10-year time horizon) and "evergreen funds" which re-invest profits back into the fund DEAL OF THE WEEK Collecta Total raised: $6.55mm Read more: PaidContent Venture Financings Zynga Total Raised: $366mm Read more: TechCrunch BeachMint Total raised: $5.0mm Read more: TechCrunch TRUSTe Total raised: $22.0mm Read more: TechCrunch Connotate Total raised; $5.25mm plus undisclosed seed Read more: TechCrunch M&A; Coremetrics (acquired by IBM) No financial details disclosed Read More: TechCrunch

- Venture Capital - This Week in Venture Capital - Michael Montgomery, President of Montgomery & Co.
This week we have Michael Montgomery, President of Montgomery & Co. For more information, show notes, and an upcoming schedule, go to www.thisweekin.com. For detailed shownotes check out Mark Suster's blog post www.bothsidesofthetable.com If you don't know Montgomery & Co it is one of the premier technology & media focused investment banks in the country (and as Michael corrected me they also have a strong Healthcare / Med tech practice). For entrepreneurs who want to learn about how to work with investment banks, how to position yourself to be acquired and what the IPO markets look like this is the episode to watch. Michael is a very accomplished corporate executive in his own right having run Sega Gameworks and helped IPO EuroDisney as well as having been on the founding team of DreamWorks SKG (where he helped them raise their first $900 million in equity). Shame they didn't like his suggested name for the company: DreamWorks SKG-MM We discussed: 1. The Montgomery Conference: one of the top technology events of the annual calendar in the United States and held every March. The importance of the conference is that it assembles most of the top privately held early-to-mid-stage technology companies in the country (and some globally) as well as most VC's, growth equity funds and corporate development departments from large industry players looking at technology acquisitions. You have to be selected to present and it is typically reserved for companies that have already ...

- Venture Capital - This Week in Venture Capital - Kelly Hwang, Associate at GRP
This week we have Kelly Hwang, Associate at GRP. For more information, show notes, and an upcoming schedule, go to www.thisweekin.com. Mark Suster hosts This Week in Venture Capital. The following is from Mark Suster's post on www.bothsidesofthetable.com How VC's Calculate Valuation: We walked through a standard deal where you raise $1 million at a $3 million pre-money valuation leading to a $4 million post money valuation. The math works out that the investor owns 25% of the company post deal ($1 million invested / $4 million valuation) and assuming 1 million shares, each share would be valued at $3 / share ($3000000 pre-money / 1 million shares = $3 / share). Investors own 25%, the founders own 75%. NOTE: In the video I talked about how VC's and entrepreneurs decide the total number of shares at the first major funding round and why it's often a high number. But this example above is all entrepreneur math, not the VC's. The VC assumes you'll have an option pool. That's normal. You'll need to hire and retain talen to grow your company. Those options need to come from somewhere. The more senior members you have (say you already have a CEO, CTO, VP marketing, VP Biz Dev, VP Products) then the less options you'll need and vice versa. Industry standard post your first round of funding will be 15-20%. I say "post" funding because you'll need more than this amount pre-funding to get to this number after funding. We walk through this in the video. To view the more detailed ...
