Volvo Ocean Race - Southern Ocean Big Wave Footage
The fleet of boats in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 have taken a beating just over 10 days after leaving Auckland, New Zealand for Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. Massive 10-meter waves and powerful winds as high as 40 and 50 knots in the Southern Ocean have wreaked havoc on the fleet, breaking one team's rudder, causing de-lamination to hulls and structural damage to several boats. Four boats in the fleet of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 have had to initiate repairs on their boats out at sea. One of them, Chinese-entry Team Sanya, has already returned to New Zealand, where the boat is being shipped to the United States with plans to restart the race from Miami for Leg 7 in May. Overall race leaders Team Telefónica, currently in third position, announced that they will need to make a pit-stop in Ushaia, Argentina, for repairs before continuing on to Itajaí, Brazil. CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, currently third in the overall standings, have slowed their boat speed and are headed for Chile, where they will stop in Puerto Montt to fix structural damage. Fifth-place Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing was forced to carry out considerable repairs out at sea on Friday due to hull delamination and are currently assessing their options. Meanwhile, current Leg 5 leaders Groupama sailing team and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by Berg are steadily making their way towards Cape Horn -- the only two teams yet to suffer serious damage on this 6700 nautical mile leg from Auckland to ...

Southern Ocean Sky
Clouds and sky both show illuminating changes during this time lapse video from the south of Australia. In the foreground are scenes visible over a rocky coastline toward the Southern Ocean. Dark clouds flow across the sky, sometimes from different directions, sometimes blocking background starlight, but other times causing stars to appear to flare as they move in front. In the first sequence, looking toward the southwest, a nearly vertical band of zodiacal light is seen at sunset just before the band of the Milky Way Galaxy appears to settle into the sea. Soon the unusual dark patch of the Coal Sack Nebula can be seen on the Milky Way band, near the famous Southern Cross. Later, looking toward the southeast at about 2:10 in the video, Orion can be seen rising appearing nearly perpendicular to how it rises in northern skies. The composite video, winner of an award STARMUS astrophotography competition, took over a year to compile in 2009 and 2010 from over 30 hours of exposure. Mini-mystery: what are those lights moving along the horizon? Image Credit & Copyright: Alex Cherney (Terrastro); Music: Redmann

Climate change threatening the Southern Ocean
CSIRO scientists are observing changes in ocean temperatures, ocean chemistry and global sea levels. In this vodcast, we meet four marine scientists from CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Flagship who are conducting research for the Australian Climate Change Science Program on the how increased carbon dioxide in the air affects our oceans. The scientists explain the evidence for ocean warming and acidification, the increase in strengths of major warm-water currents, changes in the productivity of marine ecosystems, and shifts in the distribution and abundance of species. For more information about our oceans and climate change go to www.csiro.au For more CSIROvods go to www.csiro.au

Volvo Ocean Race 2008 - Ferocious Southern Ocean Plays Havoc With Volvo Ocean Race Fleet
Puma and Green Dragon boats have suffered significant damage by an unforgiving Southern Ocean in the early stages of Leg Two of the Volvo Ocean Race. Meanwhile, the threat of piracy still looms large for the eight boat fleet on the 4450-mile stretch from Cape Town, South Africa, to Kochi, India. Available clips include shots of the teams sailing on Leg Two of the race, as well as soundbites with Kimo Worthington, GM of Puma Ocean Racing. Read more on www.adonnante.com

Welcome to the Antarctic Ocean
The coldest, windiest place on Earth, holds 60 percent of the fresh water on the planet. It is home to the enormous elephant seal and the ferocious leopard seal. New expeditions to the Weddell Sea produced more than 700 new species, including giant carnivorous sponges.

The Great Ocean Road: Australia's Southern Coast
Recorded January 11, 2007. The Great Ocean Road is a 150 mile stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. The road was constructed to provide work for returning soldiers and dedicated as a Memorial to those killed in the First World War. It is one of Australia's great scenic coastline drives. Much of the road hugs the coast tightly, offering outstanding views of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. Between Anglesea and Apollo Bay is a particularly scenic stretch of road which passes through many towns where mountains meet the sea. The main beach in Lorne offers great views of Louttit Bay nestled in a natural amphitheatre of hills, and Teddy's Lookout is not far from the main street. The section near Port Campbell provides access by foot or helicopter to some of the most scenic coastline in the world, because of its striking and dramatic natural limestone and sandstone rock formations. These formations have been created by erosion from waves and rain and include Loch Ard Gorge, the Grotto, London Bridge (renamed to London Arch after the 'bridge' partly collapsed), and most famously the Twelve Apostles. This video begins at Torquay and continues as we drive west. Next we make stop at Bells Beach and Port Campbell. We then see some koala bears at Kenneth River. After a stop at Apollo Bay we make it to the highlight of the day, the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. At the Twelve Apostles I go up in a ...

Earth
Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them.
HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Ocean Sky
At a star party in August 2009 I took my first long exposure photograph of the night sky. I was so thrilled with the results that I dedicated most moonless weekends since then to photographing two things I love the most in nature - the night sky and the Ocean.
Taking a series of images and combining them into a time lapse video sequence made it even more interesting. I have since experimented with all-night time lapses, panning motion, etc. But most importantly I've enjoyed the journey immensely.
This time lapse video is the result of almost 1.5 years of work, 31 hours of taking images during six nights on Southern Ocean Coast in Australia.
Ocean Sky was awarded the overall winner prize at STARMUS astrophotography competition:

PURE BRONTE
Another massive winter swell hit Sydney's coast over the last week generating monster sized waves putting on an impressive display of power and beauty along the coastline.
People spend hours and hours perched atop the cliffs at Bronte (pronounced Bron-tee) marvelling at the sheer power of waves crashing ashore observing surfers taking on the huge swells. What do people think about as they look out onto the huge swells rolling in and crashing up against the shore? Always wondered.... it appears to be quite therapeutic for so many people.
As it was a southerly swell generated by a huge low pressure system off Australia's southern most point in Tasmania only a couple of Sydney's city beaches are rideable in these conditions.
Bronte, my favourite beach and local, being one of them.
This is PURE BRONTE.....

Time Lapse From Space - Literally. The Journey Home.
Producing time-lapse video onboard the International Space Station while orbiting 250 miles above the Earth at 17,500 miles per hour helps people follow along on our missions, not as spectators, but as fellow crewmembers. -- Ron Garan, NASA Astronaut, Expedition 27 & 28
