Ghent - Belgium
Ghent is a city and a municipality located in the Flemish region of Belgium. It is the capital and biggest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Lys and in the Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university. The municipality comprises the city of Ghent proper and the towns of Afsnee, Desteldonk, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Mendonk, Oostakker, Sint-Amandsberg, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Wondelgem and Zwijnaarde. With 240191 inhabitants in the beginning of 2009, Ghent is Belgium's second largest municipality by number of inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1205 km2 (465 sq mi) and has a total population of 594582 as of 1 January 2008, which ranks it as the fourth most populous in Belgium. The current mayor of Ghent, Daniël Termont, leads a coalition of the sp.a, Open VLD and Pro Gent. Every year the ten-day-long "Ghent Festival" (Gentse Feesten in Dutch) is held. About two million visitors attend every yearArchaeological evidence shows human presence in the region of the confluence of Scheldt and Lys going back as far as the Stone Age and the Iron Age.[4] Most historians believe that the older name for Ghent, 'Ganda', is derived from the Celtic word 'ganda' which means confluence. There are no written records of the Roman period but ...

Festival of Lights Ghent 2011 HD
From Thursday 27 January until Saturday 29 January 2011 the Festival of Lights took place in the historical city centre of Ghent. The event spotlighted the prestigious Ghent light plan. The international network LUCI awarded the "City People Light Award" to the city of Ghent in 2004. At different unique locations lightning artists presented their work. Visitors followed a 5 km walking route where they could admire the work of about 20 national and international artists such as Rafaël Lozano Hemmer, Alberto Garutti, Pablo Valbuena and Dirk Braeckman; light designers, cultural partners and the art education in Ghent. The route followed the water along many historical places and monuments. This particular sequence was captured at the Old Post Office building (today : Post Plaza) on the 'Korenmarkt', displaying a fabulous scenic 3D light beam & sound show entitled 'on dirait que..' by Spectaculaires - Les allumeurs d'images. www.spectaculaires.fr

Ghent: city of lights
In Ghent one has to stay the night because the city is not only a pretty picture in daylight. Ghent is the only Belgian city with a lighting plan that ensures a romantic and safe nightly visit. Corners that in daytime remain undiscovered are suddonly revealed by the illumination. Gent, City of Arts and History
Short overview of the historical city center of Gent (Belgium), prominent Flemish Arts City and home to Belgium's largest University, nominated third most authentic historical destination worldwide according to a poll on 280 eminent academic experts initiated by the Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations and published in the prestigious National Geographic Traveler Magazine, known for its attractive photography and in-depth travel journalism, Ghent appears preeminently on the list, ranking third on 109 of the most authentic travel destinations worldwide with a score of 81 as the only Belgian city to comply with the strict criteria of historical authenticity and uniqueness as well as the ability to harmonize a rich cultural heritage with a lively local community. Ghent is preceded only by Austria's Wachau Valley and the area around the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada. Ghent is, however, the highest ranking city on the list. This is praise indeed as Ghent has done better than such prestigious destinations as Lyon, York, Dublin, Istanbul, Cape Town and Munich. The report further highlights: "An interesting range of cultural experiences: churches, medieval castle, museums and rich painting collections, well-preserved and -presented." "A gloriously eclectic city, with an excellent mix of old and new buildings. Needs to work on interpretation and signing to explain and thus help conserve its treasures. Much improved fabric." "Unlike its neighbour Bruges, Ghent has ...

Jan Van Eyck, Ghent Altarpiece, (Closed), completed 1432
Jan (and Hubert?) Van Eyck, Ghent Altarpiece or The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, tempera and oil on panel, 11' 5" x 7' 3" (closed panels), Cathedral of Saint Bavo, Ghent, Belgium, completed 1432 Second Life correspondents Max Newbold and Sez Zabelin, discuss the closed Ghent Altarpiece (see the next video for a discussion of the open altarpiece) on the Vassar campus in Second Life. Unfortunately, it is not a recreation within the Vijd Chapel in Saint Bavo's cathedral in Ghent. We start with the recreation so we can show how the altarpiece opens and closes and so that the listener can get a sense of the scale of the altarpiece (it measures 11'5" feet tall). After the introduction in Second Life, we illustrate our discussion with details that show the altarpiece's magnificence.
