A solar term is any of 24 points in traditional East Asian lunisolar calendars that matches a particular astronomical event or signifies some natural phenomenon. The points are spaced 15° apart along the ecliptic and are used by lunisolar calendars to stay synchronized with the seasons, which is crucial for agrarian societies. The solar terms are also used to calculate intercalary months in East Asian calendars; which month is repeated depends on the position of the sun at the time.
Solar terms originated in China, then spread to Korea, Vietnam, and Japan. This is exhibited by the fact that traditional Chinese, Hanja, and Kanji characters for most of the solar terms are identical.
Because the Sun's speed along the ecliptic varies depending on the Earth-Sun distance, the number of days that it takes the Sun to travel between each pair of solar terms varies slightly throughout the year. Each solar term is divided into three pentads (候 hou), so there are 72 pentads in a year. Each pentad consists of five, rarely six, days, and are mostly named after biological or botanical phenomena corresponding to the pentad.

Gavin Conibeer discusses his current GCEP project dealing with Hot Carrier Solar Cells and high efficiency solar cell technology. He focuses on the different generation of solar cells and the possibilities in terms of efficiency. His team is trying to address and limit the losses by thermalization by developing Hot Carrier Solar Cells which try to limit the thermalization loss and capture the extra energy that is lost. Conibeer is the deputy director of the School and Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia. -

Organic solar cells make use of low-cost organic polymers for photovoltaics. Although these solar cells may appear to be quite different from solar cells made with conventional inorganic semiconductors (e.g. they make use of exciton generation rather than electron-hole generation), this tutorial shows that the essential device physics is readily understood in terms of familiar solar cell fundamentals. As a certified solar installer in the United States, I have installed many solar hot water systems and have found these type of systems to be the most efficient in terms of design, installation, and receiving a return on your investment.
The average cost of a solar hot water system for a residential home is about $3,500 to $5,500. Most come in around $4,500. Once the customer has the solar hot water system turned on and it is active, they will qualify for a 30% Federal Tax Credit. Once this 30% Federal Tax Credit is used, the solar system's Return on Investment (ROI) is less than 5 years for the average residential home. A solar hot water system is designed to last 25+ years, with many last more than 30+ years.
Solar hot water systems last so long that the biggest hurdle is cutting trees down that block the solar panels, in some cases trees that didn't even exist when the solar system was installed. This is how long solar hot water systems can last!

A solar hot water system is designed to last 25+ years, with many last more than 30+ years.
Solar hot water systems last so long that the biggest hurdle is cutting trees down that block the solar panels, in some cases trees that didn't even exist when the solar system was installed. This is how long solar hot water systems can last!

The Solar Team has flown to the country to prepare for the landing and followed the backup plan pre-established by the Mission Control Center. However, the aircraft doesn't have additional wheels, as it normally does for better stability, which might cause the wing to drop. HB-SIB landed safe in Nagoya (instead of Honolulu) at 2349 local time Japan (1449 UTC). André achieves a record-breaking flight in terms duration, this is officially the longest flight in a Solar Airplane! Stay tuned for the next update on takeoff for Hawaii #futureisclean!
