Dhrupad - a film by Mani Kaul
Dhrupad is the oldest genre of hindustani music and originally was sung in hindu shrines, however it later emerged to the mughal courts and then to the stage. This film investigates the oldest dhrupad tradition, the Dagarvani dhrupad. The Dagar family traces back its origin not to the legendary MiaN Tansen, royal court musician of the Mughal emperor Akbar (1542-1605), but to his guru Swami Haridas, who was a brahmin, later Dagars converted to islam, according without difficulties their faith with hindu spirituality. This is a documentary on dagarvani, the most influential dhrupad tradition. It features the representants of the older generation like Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.

Wasifuddin Dagar (Dhrupad Vocal) at Darbar Festival 2009
Visit www.skyarts.co.uk/darbar for broadcast schedule. Wasifuddin Dagar (Dhrupad Vocal) with Mohan Shyam Sharma (Pakhwaj) Raag Khamboji Transport yourself to ancient India with deeply devotional dhrupad singing. Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar represents the 20th unbroken generation of dhrupad singers in the Dagar family. Traditionally his family has always performed dhrupad as a duet, but Wasifuddin successfully presents the dynamic of a duet in a solo performance. Darbar Festival 2009 Described by one artist as the G20 summit of Indian music and by World Music magazine Songlines as surely Britains best festival of south Asian music, the Darbar Festival is says arts journalist, Jameela Siddiqui a place where everyone expects and gets the highest quality performances of Indian classical music. Indian classical music is arguably one of the most complex and complete systems of music ever developed. What began as Vedic chants several thousand years ago developed into a sophisticated musical system by the 3rd century. The music is based on a single melody line, which is played over a fixed drone and the performance is based melodically on particular ragas and rhythmically on talas. The music has been passed down orally. Improvisation predominates and written notation, when used, is skeletal. This series from the Darbar Festival, presented by Lopa Kothari, features ten outstanding performances from artists from the two main strands of Indian classical music, the North Indian ...

Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, Ashish Sankrityayan Dhrupad The Call of the Deep 3
Excerpt 3 (For two more excerpts see www.dhrupad-film.de ) Dhrupad the Call of the Deep is a documentary film on Dhrupad - the ancient classical court and temple music genre of North India, featuring as its main protagonist Dagar family patriarch Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar. The film documents the process of oral transmission of traditional knowledge and focuses on the complex linkages between Dhrupad and Indian spiritual and philosophical thought, literature, art and history and also on the relevance of Dhrupad in the context of the vast globalizing influences sweeping through India now. The film documents in the first person, the interaction and the complex relation between a traditional Dhrupad maestro and his young student, with one of the two main protagonists - the student also wielding the camera, focusing mainly on his master and sometimes turning it on himself. The close physical distance between the two characters necessitates a cinematic language where the camera constantly moves around, following the movements of the protagonists and ranging over parts of the body or small objects or whatever is interesting, since only a small part of the whole picture can be accommodated in the frame at that close distance. Hand gestures or mudras are used as a voice and melodic technique in Dhrupad singing, and the film uses the complex gestures and hand movements of the singers as a metaphor for the art. There is nothing in the film that is preplanned or scripted. The ...

dhrupad III
An experimental project to use sound responsive
software to the oldest form of Indian Classical singing.
Known as the Dhrupad Style, the vocal vibration
& sonarity of sound are to generate a meditational
experience.
Dhrupad unlike the more recent & popular 'Khayal'
is firmly rooted in the spiritual practise.
The mid section of the raag here is accompanied
by the pakhawaj drum.
