How Indianapolis Fixed Its Parking Problems
Parking in most US cities can be a drag. If you're lucky enough to find an unoccupied spot, you still have to find enough change to fill up the meter. Then, if your errand takes longer than expected, you run the risk of getting a ticket. Maintaining parking meters is no picnic for city governments either. Coins need to removed and batteries need to be replaced frequently. On top of all that, because parking meter rates in most cities haven't changed for decades, meters typically don't generate much revenue. Things are different in Indianapolis. A couple of years ago, the city partnered with a division of Xerox to take over management of the city's parking meter system. ParkIndy replaced all the old meters with new meters that accept credit cards. Even better, drivers with smart phones can now download apps that make it easy to pay for parking, extend the parking time and even find an open spot. Sure, parking at meters is a little more expensive, but the experience for drivers in Indianapolis is much improved. The best part about this public-private partnership is that the arrangement will help the city's bottom line. The old system generated less than $100000 in 2010. In 2011, the new parking meters generated more than one million dollars. Over the course of the 50-year lease, the city will make upwards of $350 million. Approximately 3 minutes. ****PLEASE READ!!!***** For the record I did NOT put any coins in this meter..The Meter Maid did nothing wrong. And I believed I still had time in the meter. The bill has been paid. however here is the whole story.. www.nbclosangeles.com "Man who disputed parking ticket apologizes to enforcement officer after tipster admits to dropping dime in meter" "It turns out, both parties were right, and it was a stranger who attempted to thwart the ticket. A parking enforcement officer who was caught on video issuing a ticket to a vehicle that apparently still had time on the meter was in the right and the ticket was valid, according to the driver who posted the video online. "Sincere apologies to the parking officer for accusing him of cheating on the job. We were in the wrong, the ticket was valid, and it has been paid," wrote Gabriel Friedman on the YouTube video's description, which was updated Wednesday. The video, which was published Sunday, has amassed more than 200000 views. After the story aired on NBC4, a tipster contacted Friedman, writing that he was the one who put extra money in the meter after the attendant started writing the citation. "The crazy thing is that we had jumped out of my truck, and the meter guy was just walking up to your car. I had a dime in my pocket, and as I walked by your meter, the meter guy was looking away, so I dropped in the dime," wrote the tipster who wished to remain anonymous. In an interview with NBC4 on Wednesday, the tipster said that ...

UPDATE ON FEB. 20TH 2010
I took some time (very little) to write out the commentary for those of you who can’t understand German. Keep in mind I’m not a native speaker myself. There are also a few parts that make little sense because the commentary itself is a bit dodgy.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Doesn’t matter if it’s keeping straight ahead or doing wiggly lines, seems to be no problem for the skater in this video.
He definitely has a hard time balancing, but he isn’t falling.
This mega-grind takes unbelievable 40 seconds to complete.
But is this really possible without cheating somehow? We’re showing the video to a few passerbys to find out what they’re thinking.
»I don’t think this is possible. The rail is too long.«
»Well, what he does is definitely crazy, but... I think it’s possible.«
»I don’t think one can keep it’s balance for this long. Because looking at skateboarders I realised they can only grind a few meters and that’s it...«
»Could be possible actually...«
»No, this doesn’t work...« »No, not for that long.«
»He can’t go through the curves, he can only drive (lol) straight...«
The passengers are doubtful, but what do actual rollerbladers think?
We’re starting to look for some of them in the streets but realize the bad weather has given the cool guys (lol) a hard time lately.
The next skatepark is 40 kilometers (25 miles) afar from Munich.
We meet Nicolas, 17 years old, and Konstantin, also 17 years old. Both have been in the game for four years.
Short grinds on stairs, rails and quoins (lol) are part of the trick repertoire of both of them. But is it possible to grind a rail that long as seen in the video, or is it a fake? What do they think?
»Well, one could try it...«
»Well, it is definitely possible, but it is also very difficult to do.«
Both of them agree it’s possible. With a lot of practice basically everything could be grinded. It shouldn’t be that hard theoretically. (lol)
»There are two differnet spots on our skates we can grind on. One is in between the middle wheels of the frame and one is on the soulplate. That’s basically the outside edge of the boot on which you can grind a rail like this.«
If one is practicing long enough something like the grind shown in the video should be possible, we recall. As long as one isn’t losing interest in getting better, that is.
Quitting seems highly likely because slams, pain and scary moments are undoubtedly a big part of this activity. Skaters must have the ability to take a beating, and the next harsh slam can happen to them almost every moment.
»The greatest risk while attempting a grind is not locking onto the obstacle properly or having the wheels bite the rail, which can make you hit the ground pretty hard resulting in severe pain.«
»As a beginner, you’re eating shit on the regular.«
Konstantin and Nicolas both agree with each other: only the best in the world can perform a grind as seen in the video.
We’re having a closer look on the video. At the end of it the name „Chris Haffey“ is shown.
It turns out that this guy is one of the best rollerbladers in the world.
To visit him, we have to reach over the pond leaving the winterly Munich for sunny California.
Chris calls Long Beach his home.
We’re starting our quest in the largest skatepark in town. This place is crowded, but most of the kids are skateborders.
But after a while we’re spotting this group of rollerbladers in the halfpipe. (lulz) It’s obvious at first sight: these guys are on top of their game!
We’re showing them the video. Do they know Chris, the skater in the video? Have they heard of the video? (TEH ROOTZ?)
»Sure, that’s the 666 rail.«
»What does 666 mean?«
»Well, that’s the lenght of the rail. 666 feet. But I suggest you ask Chris here, he’s the guy in the video eventually.«
»Is this you in the video?«
»Yes, this must have been 8 or 9 years ago. I was 15 at that time.«
»Do you think you still got it?«
»Sure. It’s been a while, but I should be able to do it.«
We still doubt we’ve found him this quick.
But Chris convinces us in a heartbeat. Jumps like this can only be performed by one of the best bladers in the world.
The grinds in the skatepark are no big deal for Chris.
But what about t

AutoWed Wedding Vending Machine by Concept Shed
This is our AutoWed Wedding Machine - yes it is as cruel and mechanised as it sounds, with the emotions of a parking meter, yet somehow putting in your $1, getting a pair of plastic rings and a personalised wedding receipt still feels special when you share it with the one you love. Aesthetically its part parking meter, part Cadillac, part cathedral and a little bit steam punk.

HavvAda Island
HAVVADA: A new land and a vision
commissioned by turkish developer Serdar Inan
A century after the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed; Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan presents the Canal Istanbul project and offers to re-visit the map of the city. One billion cubic meter of soil may be carved out of the main land in order to create the canal. Turkish developer, Mister Serdar Inan, proposes to reconstitute the soil to create an island off the shore of Istanbul and a home for a new community. Mister Inan commissions New York based designer Dror Benshetrit to draw his vision for the project; one that blends innovative design ideas, state of the art technology and cultural legacy with inspirations from the work of chief Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan.
Like the Nurai Island in 2008, this project came to Dror as the most-unexpected chance to investigate the idea of the living environment at a scale his mind had never touched before. Dror chose to look at the intimidating project as an opportunity to think about urban design and the life of a community. He spearheaded a reflection group to explore ideas. The team of experts included the Buckminster Fuller Institute, Buro Happold, Shoji Sadao from Fuller, Sadao & Zung Architects. Six months of rich interdisciplinary dialogs have allowed him to draw a radical urban design vision that aims to make the island a home for a new community with the highest quality of life and a positive environmental impact. Dror's vision for HavvAda is one that raises question rather than one that intends to bring answers.
The vision unveiled in Istanbul on September 29, results from Dror's fascination for structure and spatial geometry. With HavvAda, he stretches physics principals that he has long investigated such as the Quadror geometry. He offers to revisit concepts and ideas for urban environment, such as urban design theories, including the Garden City by Ebenezer Howard and studies of Buckminster Fuller's legacy in structural engineering. Today, Dror has drawn a landscape that will keep adapting to the dynamics of the site.
A green island made of 6 hills of different sizes circling the downtown center of the land. Each hill up rises on top of a mega structural sphere that supports the residences on the hillsides and a community life at the center. The diameter of the island is 3 km long with a 1 km diameter valley in the center.
Each hill is drawn as a mega-dome structure inspired by engineering and structural principals studied and implemented in architecture since ancient times and further developed as a geodesic dome in the last century by Buckminster Fuller.
The design proposed for most of the island relies on compression and tensional integrity; it maximizes the material utilized to build the structure and infra-structure of the island. The urban planning optimizes the slopes of the hills and their panoramic view on each side for greater residential areas.
Traditionally, communities have built their residential areas around the center of the town where political decisions or trade was made, and spiritual and religious temples were built—the community would grow around those centers with extended skirts of residence buildings and neighborhoods. The center valley of the island offers ideal space and planning for parks and recreation centers. Some of the buildings are covered with green living-roof. They fade in the natural environment in an organic way, while contributing to the constant energy recycling of the island.

John Hickenlooper "Change" 2003 Mayoral Campaign Ad
In 2003 increased parking meter rates were a source of citywide outrage, and Candidate John Hickenlooper highlighted the issue an example of the "fundamental nonsense of government" he sought to correct. Pledging to lower parking meter rates if elected, Candidate John Hickenlooper promised to "make change" - both literally and figuratively. Hickenlooper even wandered the streets of Downtown Denver, change belt attached, "making change" for people trying to park.
