Hoon is a derogatory term used in Australia and New Zealand, to refer to a anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily and/or dangerously. In New Zealand, the term "boy racer" is also widely used. Another slang term, revhead — derived from "rev", an alternate term for RPM — is sometimes used in place of hoon. However, "revhead" can refer to any car enthusiast, while hoon is always pejorative. "Anti-hoon laws", while they generally concern road vehicles, sometimes also target anti-social behaviour in motor boats.

Hoon activities can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tires. Those commonly identified as being involved in "hooning" or street racing are young and predominantly male, although increasingly female, drivers in the age range of 17 and 35 years.

Hoon control laws are beginning to be extended to dangerous and annoying hoon behaviour using boats and other vessels, particularly jet skis. The State of Victoria, Australia passed legislation in late 2009 to control hoon activities using recreational vessels.

Etymology

At the turn of the 20th century in Australia, the term "hoon" (and its rhyming slang version "silver spoon") had a different meaning: one who lived off immoral earnings (i.e. the proceeds of prostitution – a pimp or procurer of prostitutes).

Linguist Sid Baker in his book ''The Australian Language'' suggested that "hoon" (meaning "a fool") was a contraction of Houyhnhnm, a fictional race of intelligent horses which appears in ''Gulliver's Travels'' by Jonathan Swift.

Hoon, when used in relation to people in motor vehicles (or associated with car culture), may be onomatopoeia. One may speak of a car, or its driver, or its occupants in general as "hooning down the road" .

Anti-hoon legislation in Australia

The term "hoon" has obtained a semi-official use in Australia, with police and Governments referring to legislation targeting anti-social driving activity as "anti-hoon laws". The term has even begun to appear in the titles of legislation, for example the Transport Legislation Amendment (Hoon Boating and Other Amendments) Act 2009 of the State of Victoria.

In Western Australia, the ''Road Traffic Amendment (Impounding and Confiscation of Vehicles) Bill 2004'', which was passed by the Parliament of Western Australia in June 2004, empowered the Western Australia Police to confiscate and impound vehicles found to be engaging in excessive speed or noise. The law was used to impound a Lamborghini that was being driven by a mechanic without the owner's knowledge. The police claim that the law does not permit them to release the car under the only legal course of action available to the owner, that of "hardship". The police claim that if he has the money to own the car "he can afford to hire a vehicle", leading the owner to claim that the law is the equivalent of "mandatory sentencing without trial". The Western Australian Police Minister, Rob Johnston, "admits the laws are unfair but says he stands by them". Former Western Australia District Court Chief Judge Antoinette Kennedy described the minister's reaction as an attempt to use "the politics of envy". After all 'Hoon' related offences, the plaintiffs license is cancelled thereby forfeiting any time spent on the licence, eg. If said driver held 'P Plates' and was charged under hoon legislation, the driver would return to the start of the time period and not pick up where they left off.

In the state of Victoria, hoon-related offences include burnouts, doughnuts, drag racing, repeated driving while disqualified and high-level speeding were added to Section 84C of the ''Road Safety Act 1986'' in July 2006. Victoria Police have impounded an average of ten cars a day under the laws, with over 5,000 vehicles confiscated and impounded two years after their introduction. By contrast, the hoon boating laws of Victoria currently center on offences involving dangerous behaviour and do not yet reference offences relating to public order or amenity.

In Queensland, the ''Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000'' allows members of the Queensland Police to impound the vehicles involved in proscribed offences. The laws relating to confiscation of vehicles for offences such as street racing, time trials and burnouts were strengthened in 2002. Further laws introduced in July 2008 provided for the confiscation of vehicles for repeat offenders involved with drunk driving, driving while suspended or driving with illegal modifications. Offenders can lose their vehicle for 48 hours for the first repeat offence, up to three months for a second repeat offence, or permanently for a third repeat offence. On 11 August 2008, a number of confiscated vehicles were auctioned by the government, The remainder were crushed and sold as scrap metal.

In New South Wales, the word "hoon" is actually contained in the name of the legislation: the ''Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Car Hoons) Act 2008'' enacted in July 2008 introduced new measures against street racing and offences, and increased fines. Previous legislation provided for the vehicles of repeat offenders to be forfeited to the Crown, but the Car Hoons Act allowed the confiscated vehicles to be utilised for crash testing by the Roads and Traffic Authority, for educational and deterrence purposes as well as to test the effect of certain vehicle modification on the roadworthiness of the car.

In South Australia, the relevant legislation is the ''Criminal Law (Clamping, Impounding And Forfeiture Of Vehicles) Act 2007.'' The legislation was amended in December 2009 to direct the courts that when recording a conviction for a 'prescribed offence' that the court must also make an order that the motor vehicle specified in the application is forfeited to the Crown. At this point the Police Commissioner can choose to either sell or dispose of the car. i.e. crush it. At the end of 2010, 62 cars had been impounded by the courts. None were worth more than $1600 and many were not even capable of reaching 150 km/h.

Notable usages

Former Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton was described as a "hoon" by a magistrate as he fined him A$500 after being caught by Victoria Police performing fishtails and burnouts in his Mercedes-AMG C63 two days before the 2010 Australian Grand Prix.

Other connotations of the term

In both New Zealand and Australia, the term can have other related connotations. "To go for a hoon" can mean to travel or do something in a carefree manner. "To hoon around" can also mean to mess around or to act irresponsibly. A hoon tan describes where one arm is tanned from being out the drivers window, whilst the other arm is white from being inside the vehicle all the time.

2005 is a professional rally driver with the Monster World Rally Team. Block is also one of the co-founders and recently appointed Chief Brand Officer of DC Shoes. Vermont SportsCar prepared a 2005 Subaru WRX STi for Block to compete. His first event of the rallying season was Sno*Drift, where he ended up finishing seventh overall and fifth in the Group N class. During the 2005 season, Block had five top five finishes and placed third overall in the Group N class and fourth overall in the Rally America National Championship.

2006

In 2006, Ken Block along with his DC rally teammate Travis Pastrana signed a new sponsorship deal with Subaru. Block gained his first Canadian rally win at the event. In the X Games XIV rally competition, Block finished tied for third place with Dave Mirra. This occurrence was due to both competitors having issues with their car. Block, who made it to the semi-finals of the event, had a radiator problem after landing the car awkwardly on a jump. With both bronze place competitors in damaged cars unable to compete, the medals were awarded to both of them. Next up for Block this rally season is three World Rally Championship events.

2010

On January 6, 2010 the Monster World Rally Team announced Ken as their driver for selected rounds of the World Rally Championship, in which he will be campaigning the Monster/Ford Racing Focus RS WRC 08. His car will be prepared and run by the North of England based M-Sport, who also prepare the official Ford WRC cars. He will be simultaneously running in his sixth season of the Rally America Championship in an open class Ford Fiesta, as well as his fifth X-games. Ken will also be the first ever American driver to campaign for the World Rally Championship. On February 27, Block won the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood (Rally America) for the 5th consecutive time. This broke the record held by John Buffum. Ken is currently being trained by former Ford factory driver Markko Märtin. At the Spain rally, he won his first 2 points in World Rally Championship.

2011

On March 23, Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were taken to hospital, having rolled their Ford Fiesta RS WRC during the shakedown stage of the 2011 Rally de Portugal in Faro, Portugal. A representative of the Monster World Rally team later stated that both men were fine.

Other motorsport activities

On October 15, 2009, it was reported that Block was close to a deal to join the World Rally Championship in a new Ford team. Long time co-driver Alex Gelsomino is also reportedly involved in the deal. Former Subaru WRC driver Chris Atkinson has been reported to be lined up as Block's team-mate in the all-new Monster Energy Drink Ford World Rally Team.

In 2005, Ken Block along with his DC Shoes associates participated in the Gumball 3000 Rally. For the event they sent out three modified 2004 Subaru WRX STi's sponsored by DC Shoes.

In 2006, Ken Block competed in the One Lap of America competition along with Brian Scotto. They were teamed up in a 2006 Subaru WRX STi and finished forty-fifth overall.

In 2006, for the Discovery Channel show ''Stunt Junkies'', Ken Block jumped his Subaru WRX STi rally car and a max height of .

Ken Block also holds the world record for the world's fastest snow cat, a modified Subaru STI called a Trax STI.

On September 14, 2010, Block's third Gymkhana video, featuring a Ford Fiesta, was released on YouTube. The video got more than seven million views in its first week.

On August 16, 2011, the fourth Gymkhana video, ''The Hollywood Megamercial'' was released on YouTube, featuring Block driving around the Universal Studios backlot.

Ken Block is featured as a driver in Codemasters Colin McRae: Dirt 2, along with his Subaru Rally Team USA Impreza. In Dirt 3 he is seen as a driver and Gymkhana teacher, his Monster World Rally Team vehicles are available in the game.

Emraan Anwar Hashmi ( }}; (born 24 March 1979) is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films. Some of his successful films include ''Murder'', ''Gangster'', ''Jannat'', ''Raaz – The Mystery Continues'', ''Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai'', and ''Murder 2''. He has established himself as one of the successful actors of the industry. He is one of the most popular Indian film actors in Pakistan. Early life

Hashmi was born to Anwar Hashmi and Maherah Hashmi. After briefly changing his first name to Farhan, he decided to keep his original name.

Career

2000s

Hashmi entered in Bollywood at the age of 18, as an assistant director on ''Raaz''. Hashmi made his film debut in 2003 with the film, ''Footpath'', opposite Aftab Shivdasani, Bipasha Basu and Rahul Dev. ''Footpath'' did not do well at the box office.

In 2004, Hashmi and his co-star Mallika Sherawat shot to fame with the thriller, ''Murder'', which went on to become a super hit at the box office. It was Hashmi's first release of the year and his second film. It became the tenth-highest grossing movie of the year.

In 2005, Hashmi appeared in several films such as ''Zeher'', ''Kalyug'', which did moderately well at the box office. He became notable as the "Serial Kisser" for his sex scenes in films.

In 2006, Hashmi's film, ''Gangster'', opposite Shiney Ahuja and debutant Kangana Ranaut, was a semi-hit at the box office. His performance in ''Gangster'' earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role in 2007.

In 2007, Hashmi had three back to back releases; ''Good Boy Bad Boy'', ''The Train'' and ''Awarapan''. All failed at the box office.

In 2008, Hashmi had only one release, ''Jannat'' opposite debutant Sonal Chauhan, which had a 100% opening making it a critical and commercial success.

In 2011, he starred in Mohit Suri's ''Murder 2'', a sequel to the 2004 thriller ''Murder''. The film opened well and was declared a blockbuster. His latest film ''The Dirty Picture'' was released on December 2, 2011.The film received positive reviews from crictics and was declared Blockbuster by Box Office India by end of its 4th week.

Hashmi is working on multiple films such as ''Shanghai'', ''Jannat 2'', ''Raaz 3'' and ''Play''. The actor is notably famous for having many hit songs in most of his films.

Personal life

Hashmi graduated from Sydenham College in Mumbai, India. Pooja Bhatt, an actress turned writer and director, and director Mohit Suri are his cousins, while producers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt are his uncles. Hashmi married his long time girlfriend, Parveen Shahani on 14 December 2006. He became father to a baby boy on 4 February 2010 and named him Ayaan.

''Esha Gupta'' is an Indian film actress. She won the Miss India International title in 2007. She represented her country in the Miss International 2007 contest. Gupta will be making her film debut in the Bollywood film ''Jannat 2'' in 2012.

Career

Modelling (2007-2011)

Esha Gupta is Miss India International 2007 winner and Kingfisher girl who also featured in the Kingfisher calender 2010. Esha Gupta started her career in modeling before moving onto Bollywood. She was doing her Mass Communication studies before taking part in Miss India contest. Gupta is a trained Kathak and Jazz Dancer.

Debut & Breakthrough in Films (2012-present)

Launched by the Bhatt camp, Esha Gupta debuts in Bollywood with Jannat 2 opposite Emraan Hashmi in the lead role. Later, Gupta signed ''Raaz 3D'' alongside her Jannat 2 co-star, Emraan Hashmi and Bipasha Basu. Gupta has also started filming for her third film, which is her first film outside of the ''Vishesh Films'' banner, ''Chakravyuh''.
