Sambar Deer Hunting with my German Short Haired Pointer
Hunting for Sambar with Bella my pointer. The vid gives an idea of how my dog works with me. Although she is sometimes out of view of the camera she is nearly always within my sight. The thicker the bush the closer to me she works but if it opens out I let her roam about more. No Deer in this vid but videod a hind feeding later (crappy effort, I was too busy watching the deer not the camera) but I might put it up. Bella goes into a good point at the 2min 15sec mark but it turns out to be a fox that had recently passed through. You will see what she thinks of it. We worked from this table top down to the ferny wallow in Wallow vid 1

Sambar Deer pair in the dark at Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. A World Heritage Site, the park hosts two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses. Kaziranga boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. Compared to other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, crisscrossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, and the park includes numerous small bodies of water. Kaziranga has been the theme of several books, songs, and documentaries. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest. Sambar Deer feeding in Panna National Park
The Sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to southern and southeast Asia. Although it primarily refers to R. unicolor, the name "Sambar" is also sometimes used to refer to the Philippine Deer and the Rusa Deer. The name is also spelled sambur, or sambhur. The appearance and the size of sambar vary widely across their range, which has led to considerable taxonomic confusion in the past; over forty different scientific synonyms have been used for the species. In general, they attain a height of 102 to 160 centimetres at the shoulder and may weigh as much as 546 kg, though more typically 150 to 350 kg. The Sambar inhabits much of southern Asia, mainland Southeast Asia, southern China, Taiwan, and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. Sambar prefers the dense cover of deciduous shrubs and grasses, although the exact nature of this varies enormously with the environment, because of their wide range across southern Asia. Home range sizes are probably equally variable, but have been recorded as 1500 hectares (3700 acres) for males and 300 hectares (740 acres) for females in India. Sambar primarily live in woodland and feed on a wide variety of vegetation, including grasses, foliage, browse, fruit, and water plants, depending on the local habitat. Sambar are nocturnal or crepuscular. The males live alone for much of the year, and the females live in small herds of up to sixteen individuals. Indeed, in some areas, the average herd consists of only three or four ...

Sambar Deer Stalking - muddy stag.MPG
Tracking a muddy stag from his wallow. Bella was a bit too keen at times on this one because I had videod a honking match with a spikey for 15 minutes earlier this day and also had her nose to nose with a hind the day before but I declined the shot as we had a couple more days to hunt so she really wanted to find this one, I eventually had to stop videoing as I wasn't paying enough attention to hunting carefully. We caught up with him about 45 minutes after I stopped filming and he turned out to be a big bodied deer with about 22inch antlers. After stalking to within 30m of him he bolted and we eventually lost him in the thick stuff.
