Benin.
Benin / the Republic of Benin, is a country in West Africa. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north; its short coastline to the south leads to the Bight of Benin. Its size is just over 110000 km2 with a population of almost 8500000. Its capital is the Yoruba founded city of Porto-Novo but the seat of government is the Fon city of Cotonou. A democratic government between 1960 and 1972 was followed by a self-proclaimed "Marxist-Leninist" dictatorship between 1972 and 1991, which was highly repressive and led to economic collapse. Multiparty elections have taken place since 1991. About a third of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 per day.Main income sources are subsistence agriculture and cotton.

Where will the pope travel to next Benin's
September 26, 2011. (Romereports.com) Even though the pope just got back from his four day trip to Germany, his eyes are already set on his next international trip to Africa. From November 18th to the 20th, the pope will visit the country of Benin to meet with African bishops. Two years ago, their Synod took place. So, during his visit, the pope plans to deliver the post Synodal exhortation to the group, which it use as a guide in the coming years. During his visit, the pope will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Benin's evangelization. He will also honor the life and work of local cardinal Bernardin Gantin, who served as the Dean of the College of Cardinals for much of John Paul II's pontificate. Benin (formerly, Dahomey), officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in West Africa. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Its small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin is where a majority of the population is located. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is located in the country's largest city of Cotonou. Benin covers an area of approximately 110000 square kilometers (42000 sq mi), with a population of approximately 9.05 million. Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with substantial employment and income arising from subsistence farming. The official language of Benin is French, however, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken ...

Amadanyo - Fine Baby
Voices From the Mangrove is a musical and dramatic celebration of cultural themes from Nembe, Nigeria, located in the Niger River Delta region of Southern Nigeria. The Niger River Delta comprises of estuaries of tidal rivers that flush into the Bight of Benin (part of the Atlantic Ocean). The rivers encompass a wide area of lush mangrove forests, considered to be the second largest in the world. Themes of this music center around a man from this region (Amadanyo) and the songs he has written to illustrate his experiences living in two worlds: America and his homeland, Nembe. Fine-Baby: A love story illustrating the interplay between a young man and a beautiful girl-he is seeking her attention while she is flaunting her beauty (called "making yanga" in Nigeria). He never gets anywhere despite his best efforts.

togoland
Togoland was a German protectorate in West Africa from 1884 to 1914, encompassing what is now the nation of Togo and most of what is now the Volta Region of Ghana. The colony was established during the period generally known as the "Scramble for Africa". The German explorer, medical doctor, imperial consul and commissioner for West Africa Gustav Nachtigal was the driving force toward the establishment of the West African colonies of Togoland and Kamerun. From his base on the Spanish island possession Fernando Po in the Bight of Bonny he traveled extensively on the mainland of Africa. On 5 July 1884 Nachtigal signed a treaty with the local chief, Mlapa III, in which he declared a German Empire protectorate over a stretch of territory along the Slave Coast on the Bight of Benin. With the small gunboat SMS Möwe at anchor, the imperial flag was raised for the first time on the African continent. Consul Heinrich Ludwig Randad, Jr., resident agent of the firm C. Goedelts at Widah, was appointed as the first commissioner for the territory.

"The supremacy of Sudanese Islam over Negro society is less a reality than a semblance"
"ventured to doubt whether the whole of Persia contains a single true Musulman"! "Interview with Abolhassan Bani Sadr (First president of Iran) Part one: www.iran-bulletin.org AM: On the issue of individual and private freedoms, what limitations do you consider necessary? Specifically what are you views on the freedom to dress, freedom of sex, and the freedom to chose non-traditional, non-sharia forms of families which these days in many modern societies have become social and political issues of the day? Bani Sadr: I have provided detailed answers to your question in my book women and marriage. As I explained freedom has no limits. Any limit is a negation of freedom. Therefore sexual freedom is that freedom that does not place sex as a means of producing a relation of power, and its measure is love." Perry Noble The following description is the nature of religion in most African societies. books.google.com Blyden, the Negro eulogist of Islam in Africa, acknowledges that its "oriental aspect has become largely modified by shaping many of its traditional customs to the milder and more conciliatory disposition of the Negro ... In succeeding a debasing heathenism it has in many respects made compromises, so as occasionally to present a barren, hybrid character". These confessions shatter his contention that Islam has not made "degrading compromise with pagan superstitions" books.google.com As we see the northern lobe of Africa from the Bight of Benin to Abyssinia, with ...

Gelede at SICA 2011
The poem by MO Okogie in 1965, aptly describes GELEDE (or EFE) DANCE. Okogie writes: Gelede is another masquerade of repute Here in the western Coast of the Bight of Benin: He is grotesque in shape and he is less fleet of foot He is cumbersome, ugly, and hefty, within. There he goes in the street and is followed by children: He is waving on hand his horse tail in response To the adulations and praises of women Whom he eyes with his head one way bent in askance. He is out on the day after his midnight play: For donations he dances and shakes his jingling feet: He is bugbear to those at some distance away Who are not his men but commoners of the street. There are singers of women and drummers of men When he dances at night in the Gelede way. It is good to see him, as dancers were often Beat the ground to the music and twist in the play. Note: The poem was cited in: Taiwo, O. (1965)(Ed), "Collected Poems for Secondary Schools-Book", (Revised Edition), Macmillan Education Limited, London, page 13.
