Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, UHMW) is a subset of the thermoplastic polyethylene. Also known as high-modulus polyethylene, (HMPE), or high-performance polyethylene (HPPE), it has extremely long chains, with a molecular mass usually between 2 and 6 million u. The longer chain serves to transfer load more effectively to the polymer backbone by strengthening intermolecular interactions. This results in a very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made.
UHMWPE is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals except oxidizing acids; has extremely low moisture absorption and a very low coefficient of friction; is self-lubricating; and is highly resistant to abrasion, in some forms being 15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel. Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of nylon and acetal, and is comparable to that of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon), but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.

Linkam Scientific - http://linkam.co.uk UHMWPE is used to make big bundle ropes and hawsers to fix large mechanical equipment and ships, etc. Here is it being pulled apart by the TST350 tensile stage. The tensile system is used with the Linkam Imaging station to capture the images.
I couldn't find any video of UHMW being cut, so I decided to share my experience working with it. Gotta love the classy Police siren in the backround.

Drove to work just to find some time alone
I called ahead; no one answered â'cause no one's there
I'm fine, just tired and hiding from things I can't explain
Knowing it's our nature to try,
we're fighting off this ultra-high
It should be cold, it's the clouds that keep it warm
Let's say they never clear: can you last without the sun?
I'll bet you can't; I know you better than I know myself
