American Political Science Association headquarters located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

The American Political Science Association (APSA) is a professional association of political science students and scholars in the United States. Founded in 1903, it publishes three academic journals (American Political Science Review, Perspectives on Politics, and PS: Political Science & Politics). APSA Organized Sections publish or are associated with 15 additional journals.

APSA presidents serve one-year terms: the current president is Carole Pateman of University of California, Los Angeles. Woodrow Wilson, who later became president of the United States, was APSA president in 1911. APSA has its headquarters at 1527 New Hampshire Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., in a historic building that was the home of Harry Garfield, son of President James Garfield and president of the association from 1921 to 1922.

APSA administers the Centennial Center for Political Science and Public Affairs, which provides conference and research space for scholars, and Pi Sigma Alpha, the honor society for political science students. APSA also periodically sponsors seminars and other events for political scientists, policymakers, the media, and the general public.

A key part of APSA's mission is to enable political scientists to connect an environment conducive to teaching, research, and practice in all fields of political science and to ensure support necessary for the discipline to thrive. APSA conducts several annual conferences, which provides this environment for scholars and other professionals to network and present their work, along with other pertinent and useful resources. The APSA Annual Meeting is among the world's largest gatherings of political scientists. It occurs on Labor Day weekend each summer. The 2007 meeting in Chicago drew 6,900 participants. The 2008 annual meeting was in Boston and the 2009 meeting was in Toronto (September 3-6). The 2010 meeting was in Washington, DC on September 2-5, 2010. The 2011 Annual Meeting is in Seattle, Washington.

The APSA Teaching and Learning Conference is a smaller working group conference hosting cutting-edge approaches, techniques, and methodologies for the political science classroom. The conference provides a forum for scholars to share effective and innovative teaching and learning models and to discuss broad themes and values of political science education--especially the scholarship of teaching and learning.

With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, APSA Africa Workshops APSA has organized political science workshops in various locations in Africa. The first workshop was convened in Dakar, Senegal in partnership with the West African Research Center from July 6-27, 2008. The second workshop was convened in Accra, Ghana in partnership with the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon from June 21-July 10. The 2010 APSA residential workshop on Global Perspectives on Politics and Gender will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The annual residential workshops are led by a joint U.S. and African organizing team and aimed at mid-and junior-level scholars residing in Africa. They will enhance the capacities of political scientists and their resources in East and West Africa while also providing a forum for supporting their ongoing research. Each three week workshop brings together up to 30 scholars and cover substantive issues, methodologies, and reviews of research.

Norman J. Ornstein is a political scientist and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a Washington D.C. think tank. Ornstein was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota^[1] in 1948 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1974. He is married to Judith L. Harris, a litigation attorney specializing in regulatory matters.

Ornstein studies American politics and is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post and many magazines. He has written a weekly column for Roll Call since 1993, and is currently co-director, along with Thomas E. Mann, of the AEI-Brookings Election Reform Project.

Ornstein helped draft key parts of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, also known as the McCain-Feingold Act.^[2]

Ornstein is a long-time friend of current U. S. Senator and left leaning comedian Al Franken. Ornstein considers himself a centrist.^[3]

Ornstein is a member of the Advisory Board of the Future of American Democracy Foundation,^[4] a non-profit, nonpartisan foundation in partnership with Yale University Press and the Yale Center for International and Area Studies "dedicated to research and education aimed at renewing and sustaining the historic vision of American democracy".^[5] He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Law and Politics at the University of Minnesota Law School.^[6] Ornstein is also a member of the Board of Directors of the nonpartisan election reform group Why Tuesday?.

Victoria Hattam (born 1954) is an Australian-born^[1] American political scientist,^[2] noted for her research on American political economy and political development, and on the role of class, race and ethnicity in American politics.

Hattam graduated from the University of Melbourne in Australia in 1976 with a B.A.(Hons) degree in political science and philosophy. She completed her M.A. at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1979 and her PhD in political science at MIT in 1987. Her doctoral dissertation on "Unions and Politics: The Courts and American Labor, 1806-1896" was awarded the E.E. Schattschneider prize by the American Political Science Association in 1989 for the best dissertation on American government and politics. Hattam's revised dissertation was published as her first book, Labor Visions and State Power (1993) and examines why labor has played a more limited role in national politics in the United States than in other advanced industrial societies.

Hattam taught at Yale University from 1987 to 1993, and was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation from 1997 to 1999 and a member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton for 2000-2001. She joined the political science faculty at New School University in New York in 1993 and is presently an professor and chair of the department.

Hattam is president of the Politics and History Section of APSA for 2006–2007 and is a member of the editorial board of the journals International Labor and Working-Class History and Studies in American Political Development.

Hito Steyerl has produced a variety of work as a filmmaker and author in the field of essayist documentary video. Her principal topics of interest are media and the global circulation of images. In 2004 she participated in Manifesta 5, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art. She also participated in documenta 12, Kassel 2007, Shanghai biennial 2008, and Gwangju and Taipeh biennials 2010 and was the subject of numerous solo exhibitions ^[1] throughout Europe. In addition, Steyerl holds a PhD in Philosophy, is a professor for media art at the University of Arts Berlin and has taught film and theory at (amongst other institutions) Goldsmiths College and Bard College, Center for Curatorial Studies.

Frances Fox Piven (born October 10, 1932)^[1] is an American professor of political science and sociology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, where she has taught since 1982.^[2] Previously, she had been a member of the political science faculty at Boston University.

Life and education[link]

Piven was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada,^[2] of Russian Jewish immigrant parents,^[3] Rachel (née Paperny) and Albert Fox, a storekeeper.^[4][5] Piven immigrated to the United States when she was one and was naturalized as a United States Citizen in 1953.^[2] She was raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. She attended P.S. 148 and Newtown High School.^[6] She received a B.A. in City Planning in 1953, an M.A. in 1956, and a Ph.D. in 1962, all from the University of Chicago.^[2] She attended on a scholarship and she waitressed for living expenses.^[6]

Career[link]

Piven was married to her long-time collaborator Richard Cloward until his death in 2001.^[2] Together with Cloward, she wrote an article in the May 1966 issue of The Nation titled "The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty" advocating increased enrollment in social welfare programs in order to collapse that system and force reforms, leading to a guaranteed annual income.^[7][8] This political strategy has been referred to as the "Cloward–Piven strategy".^[9] During 2006/07 Piven served as the President of the American Sociological Association.^[10]

While at Boston University, she and her political science department colleagues Murray Levin and Howard Zinn refused to go back to work after the settlement of the 1979 American Association of University Professors strike. Clerical and support staff had also gone out on strike at the time of the AAUP, and Piven, Levin, Zinn and others refused to cross their picketline. The "B.U. Five" were threatened with dismissal by B.U. President John Silber.^[11]

Silber later backed down, and Piven and the others eventually returned to the classroom.^[12] Piven eventually left B.U. for C.U.N.Y.

Activism and legislation[link]

Throughout her career, Piven has combined academic work with political action.^[13] In 1968, she signed the “Writers and Editors War Tax Protest” pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the Vietnam War.^[14] In 1983 she co-founded Human SERVE (Service Employees Registration and Voter Education), an organization with the goal of increasing voter registration by linking voter registration offerings with the use of social services or state Departments of Motor Vehicles. Human SERVE's initiative was incorporated by the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, colloquially known as the "Motor Voter Bill".^[2]

She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and serves^[15] as one of the eight honorary chairs of that organization.^[16]

Some of Piven's major works include^[17] Regulating the Poor written with Richard Cloward, first published in 1972 and updated in 1993, which is a scrutiny of government welfare policy and how it is used to exert power over lower class individuals;^[18] Poor Peoples' Movements, published in 1977, an analysis of how rebellious social movements can induce important reforms;^[19] Why Americans Don't Vote, published in 1988 and a follow up book Why Americans Still Don't Vote published in 2000, each of which look at the role of current American electoral practices which tend to discourage the poor working class from exercising their right to vote;^[20] The War at Home published in 2004, a critical examination of the domestic results of the wars initiated by the Bush administration;^[21] Challenging Authority: How Ordinary People Change America, a look at the interaction of disruptive social movements and electoral politics in generating the political force for democratic reform in American history.^[22]
