CAPTAIN KIDD (1945) Randolph Scott - Charles Laughton
Directed by Rowland V Lee In 1699, William Kidd (Charles Laughton), a ruthless pirate who has recently captured the ship The Twelve Apostles and killed its crew, presents himself at the court of King William III (Henry Daniell) as an honest shipmaster seeking royal backing. With this backing, he recruits a crew from the inmates of Newgate and Marshalsea prisons, promising them a royal pardon at the end of their voyage. Among the new recruits is the quarrelsome, though cultured Adam Mercy (Randolph Scott), whom Kidd makes his new master gunner because of his claimed prior service with a famous pirate. CAST Charles Laughton as Capt. William Kidd Randolph Scott as Adam Mercy / Adam Blayne Barbara Britton as Lady Anne Dunstan John Carradine as Orange Povey Henry Daniell as King William III Reginald Owen as Cary Shadwell

Charles Laughton in THE SUSPECT (1944) - 1/9
In 1902 London, unhappily married Philip Marshall (Charles Laughton) meets young Mary Gray (Ella Raines), who is unemployed and depressed. Their deepening friendship, though physically innocent, is discovered by Philip's wife (Rosalind Ivan, playing virtually the same role here as in Fritz Lang's SCARLET STREET a year later), who threatens him with exposure and scandal, driving him to murder her. Thereafter, fortune seems to smile on Philip Marshall; but does fate have a surprise in store? Henry Daniell costars as Philip's ne'er-do-well neighbor. Directed by Robert Soidmak and based on James Ronald's novel "The Way Out". www.imdb.com

First time on YouTube. From a 1950 radio show, Elsa Lanchester (the Bride of Frankenstein) and Charles Laughton (Quasimodo, Captain Bligh), who were married in real life, sing Frank Loesser's delightful winter classic. One of the strangest and most wonderful versions of the song ever.

Charles Laughton & Marilyn Monroe - "The Cop and the Anthem" ('Full House')
"The Cop and the Anthem" was one of five short stories by O. Henry which were featured in the 1952 movie "Full House" and introduced by the writer John Steinbeck. Charles Laughton played a tramp who wanted to spend the cold winter in a nice warm jail, so he committed several petty crimes in order to get arrested. One of these was accosting a young lady window-shopping in the hope she'd report him to a nearby policeman. Instead she turned out to be a hooker, played in a one-minute role by a rising young star named Marilyn Monroe. Laughton's fellow tramp in this delightful short comedy was played by David Wayne. Enjoy!

Rare Charles Laughton footage (part 1 of 3)
You may have heard that, in 1948, Charles Laughton appeared in the movie "On Our Merry Way" playing a minister, but his part ended on the cutting room floor. Well, it is true... in the US. A complete, alternate print containing the Laughton part (but, interestingly, not the Dorothy Lamour one) and titled "A Miracle Can Happen" (indeed!) reached the coasts of Europe, and it's the version widely seen (TV, video, DVD) in Spain. Now here's the scene for your enjoyment. As a bonus, I'm also uploading the credits sequence of this alternate print, in which Laughton is prominently billed.

Witness for the Prosecution NHS
Sir Wilfrid Robarts (Charles Loughton) cross-examines Miss Janet McKenzie (Una O'Connor) in Billy Wilder's classic courtroom drama. Exposing her need for a hearing aid -- which she has waited for for more than six months to receive from the British National Health Service -- Robarts destroys the credibility of her ear-witness testimony.

Mutiny on the Bounty -- The Man Is Dead
HMS Bounty sails for Tahiti by way of Cape Horn...and into movie lore. Grandly filmed, Mutiny on the Bounty captured the 1935 Best Picture Academy Award and eight nominations total. Charles Laughton portrays Captain Bligh, a seafaring monster ruling with the law of fear. Clark Gable is first officer Fletcher Christian, whose will to obey erodes under Bligh's tyranny. And Franchot Tone plays idealistic midshipman Byam, torn by his allegiance to both. That all three portrayals are vividly memorable is accented by the fact that for the only time in Oscar history, three stars from the same film were Best Actor nominees. Own this on 11/16.
