The Importance of Preserving Material Culture
The Importance of Preserving Material Culture
Magnes co-founder, Rebecca Fromer, discusses the importance of preserving material culture.During the political upheavals of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Jews fled their homes and communities in and around India, North Africa, and the former Ottoman Empire. As much of this material culture was being actively destroyed, artifacts from these communities were at risk of vanishing altogether. In response, Magnes co-founders Rebecca and Seymour Fromer, curator Ruth Eis, and volunteer Rabbi Bernard Kimmel traveled to these areas, sometimes at great personal risk, to collect and preserve these materials for future generations. These unique objects were researched as part of the museum's multi-year Collection Access Project, which will enable the museum to dramatically improve the care, interpretation, and exhibition of the permanent collection. This video was filmed as part of the Museum Loan Network's "Collecting Stories: Connecting Objects" Grant and the Journeys East, Patterns of Collecting exhibition: dl.lib.brown.edu www.magnes.org Alla Efimova, Magnes Chief Curator, interviewed Rebecca and Seymour Fromer and Ruth Eis on April 20, 2006 at the home of Ruth Eis in Oakland, CA. Korean Shaman (Mudang 무당) - Objects of Worship: Material Culture in Korean Shamanism (musok )
Korean Shaman (Mudang 무당) - Objects of Worship: Material Culture in Korean Shamanism (musok )
Shamans (mudang 무당) in South Korea dance, sing, heal, and divine the future through the mediation of various artifacts. Colorful flags assist in predicting good or bad fortune, food offerings appease gods and spirits, and various costumes and paintings depict supernatural entities and are manipulated to summon those powers into the shaman's body during a ritual called Kut (굿). The material culture of musok is now increasingly being sold in shaman good stores, allowing store owners and art traders to become active participants in the production process of ritual events. Arunachal Pradesh - The Unexplored Paradise - Part One
Arunachal Pradesh - The Unexplored Paradise - Part One
Arunachal Pradesh, one of India's Eight North Eastern States. It shares its border with Bhutan, Tibet and Myanmar. Much of the land is mountainous, covered by the Himalaya in the north and west and the Patkai hills in the east. The state is also home to countless valleys and rivers, the mightiest being the Siang. The climate of Arunachal Pradesh ranges from alpine to temperate and sub-tropical, varying with elevation. The state receives heavy rainfall during its monsoon season making it the perfect home for dense forest and an enormous diversity of plant and animal life. This part of India is appropriately known as the "unexplored paradise." It is a thinly populated state positioned in the foothills of the Himalaya. Just over one million people inhabiting an area a little over 83000 square miles. Much of the Arunachal population live in tribes whose ancestors are believed to have migrated from pre-Buddhist Tibet two to three thousand years ago. Oral histories and material culture, including the traditional way of dressing and religious practices, are the strongest indicators of a Tibeto-Burman origin among many of the tribes. (Keep option: Oral histories and material culture, including the traditional way of dressing and religious practices, are the strongest indicators of a Tibeto-Burmese origin among many of the tribes.) The cuisine of Azerbaijan is one of the ancient, rich and delicious cuisines in the world. "The cuisine of Azerbaijan" is not only dishes, the technology of their preparation, but a part of material culture as well. The cuisine of Azerbaijan is the harmonic unity of culture, history, philosophy, table psychology, traditions, physiology, hygiene, chemistry, equipment, ethics, aesthetics, poetry and poetic aspects of the cuisine, as well as practical habits created by Azerbaijani people in the territories where they lived in harmony with the environment. The cuisine of Azerbaijan "born" with the genius of Azerbaijan people in the territories of its historical habitation: today's Azerbaijan Republic, Southern (Irani) Azerbaijan, former khanate of Iravan that turned into today's Armenia after forced ethnical clarification, the lands of Zangezur and Goycha mahals(districts), ancient settlements of Azerbaijanis in Georgia-Borchali, Dagestan, Derbend-the capital of one of the former khanates of Azerbaijan and there surroundings.

The Goldens WONDERS of the Bulgarian Archaeology - Rogozen Gold Treasure & more
song 1 - Elica Todorova & Stojan Jankulov - Voda (Club_mix)song 2: - Trio Bulgarka (DJ Jonney K remix).Elitsa & Stoyan - Water (Bulgaria - 5th on Eurovision 2007) From Wikipedia: The prehistoric origins of the Thracians remain obscure, in absence of written historical records. Evidence of Proto-Thracians in the prehistoric period depends on remains of material culture. It is generally proposed that a Proto-Thracian people developed from a mixture of indigenous peoples and Indo-Europeans from the time of Proto-Indo-European expansion in the Early Bronze Age.[2]. In the 6th century some Thracian tribes south of the Danube river made contacts with the invading Slavs and were later Slavicised. Thus they became one of the main ethnic elements in the consolidation of the Bulgarian nation in 8-9th century. Linguistic evidence about this is the presence of Thracian and direct Latin loanwords in Old Bulgarian and modern Bulgarian language. The archaeological research of the Thracian culture started in the 20th century and especially after World War II, mainly on the territory of Southern Bulgaria. As a result of intensive excavation works in the 1960s and 1970s a number of Thracian tombs and sanctuaries were discovered. More significant among them are: the Tomb of Sveshtari, the Tomb of Kazanlak, Tatul, Seuthopolis, Perperikon, the Tomb of Aleksandrovo, Sarmizegetusa, etc. Also a large number of elaborately crafted gold and silver treasure sets from the 5th and 4th century BC were ...
