Germany: Pirate Party leads 'toilet brush marchers' through Hamburg
The Pirate party led a march of toilet brush-brandishing protesters through the centre of Hamburg's police-imposed "danger zone", Saturday. The toilet brush has come to be a symbol of the protest movement after a policewoman reportedly arrested someone who had a toilet brush on their person, as she deemed the item to be a potentially dangerous weapon. The police established the "danger zones" in Hamburg following a series of clashes between police and protesters in December. European centre-left launches election drive and attacks austerity
Centre-left parties have named German Social Democrat Martin Schulz as their candidate for next head of the European Commission. As they did so, they called for changes to the austerity policies brought in to tackle the eurozone crisis. The Party of European Socialists - which groups the main centre-left parties - said the policies had led to unemployment and hardship. "During the next five years, for every action we take in the EU we must be able to simply answer the question: how will this ... German Socialists Vote For Participation In New Cabinet
Germany's main centre-left party has voted overwhelmingly to go into government with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats, clearing the way for Merkel to start her third term at the head of a new coalition. The Social Democrats' (SPD) vote on Saturday means the new government can take office on Tuesday. The SPD said that 76 percent of its grassroots members who took part in a postal ballot voted in a referendum in favour of joining a right-left coalition with the conservatives. The ballot of the Social Democrats' nearly 475,000 members caps post-World War II Germany's longest effort to form a government. Party treasurer Barbara Hendricks said a resounding 76 percent backed a left-right coalition pact after a postal ballot among its 475,000 members. The unprecedented, binding referendum, which drew nearly 78 percent turnout, marked an unqualified triumph for SPD chief Sigmar Gabriel, nearly three months after his party's bruising loss to Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) in the general election. "I have never seen my party so politically engaged in the 36 years I have belonged to it," a beaming Gabriel said, flanked by the party leadership. "It's been a long time since I was so proud to be a Social Democrat." Cabinet announcement Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), won the September 22 election but fell short of a majority. They had spent much of the past three months negotiating a coalition agreement with the SPD, a distant second in September. The leaders of the three parties will announce the 15 members of the cabinet on Sunday. The coalition agreement was due to be signed on Monday and Merkel's new government could be sworn into office on Tuesday, making her only the third chancellor in German post-war history to serve a third term. Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, one of the main architects of Germany's tough-love response to the eurozone crisis, would stay on, according to media leaks. Meanwhile Gabriel was to head up a "super-ministry" in charge of the economy and Germany's ambitious energy transformation away from nuclear power and toward renewables. Germany appeared poised to tap its first woman as defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, a mother-of-seven. Gabriel called the rank-and-file vote to rally his often fractious party around the left-right government and drove a hard bargain during the coalition talks, which wrapped up in late November. He extracted concessions including Germany's first national minimum wage, permission for dual citizenship for children of immigrants, restrictions on temporary jobs and a lowering of the retirement age to 63 for those who paid into the system for 45 years.- published: 14 Dec 2013

Both were grilled by four journalists and the debate was watched by an estimated 17.5 million people. Newspapers and viewers declared there to be no clear winner, with neither politician dealing a killer blow. The pair clashed over the Euro, tax policy and US spying but delivered few surprises. Steinbrueck accused Merkel of causing misery by imposing austerity on southern Europe. She pointed out that everything she had put through ""You voted for." Merkel is currently in a coalition with the centre-right Free Democrats (FDP.) Rainer Bruederle, the main candidate for the FDP said after the debate: "Once again since last night it is clear to me that SPD is no alternative. Bossiness is not political model. The chancellor has described the accomplishments of the Christian-Liberal coalition at best." The leaders of the smaller parties will have their own election debate Steinbrueck has said he refuses to be in a coalition with Merkel's Christian Democrats and would prefer to go into coalition with the Green Party. Head of the Green Party, Claudia Roth, gave her opinion on the televised debate: "The duel has shown that everything is possible, nothing is decided. It showed that the Greens are needed, there was a lot of old fashioned ideas in the debate. Ecology, energy turnaround, environment protection, climate protection were not even mentioned." And then there was the necklace. Made of long metal beads in the red, yellow and black colours of the German flag, it was all anyone was tweeting about. It even has it's own twitter account. Studies show that up to five percent of German voters make their decision based on the TV debate. With just three weeks to go until the election, polls put the chancellor in the lead but still needing a coalition partner, meaning the final outcome of the election is still uncertain Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews- published: 02 Sep 2013

WRAP Security ahead of federal elections preps polls open vox pops 2009 News
Germans were deciding on Sunday whether to return the nation s first woman chancellor to a second term in office following a lacklustre election campaign centered largely on economic issues and a rash of last-minute threats by Islamic extremists. Security was tight in Berlin following a series of threats by Islamic groups apparently seeking to sway voters by threatening retaliation if Germany does not pull its 4200 troops out of the NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission in Afghanistan. But on the city streets there was little expectation of any real threat to voters. Chancellor Angela Merkel is hoping enough of the nation s 62.2 m million eligible voters will support her conservative Christian Democratic Party to give them a solid enough standing to form a centre-right coalition with their top partners the Free Democrats. One of the final surveys before voting began at 0600GMT on Sunday indicated the conservatives could capture 33 percent of the vote while the Free Democrats were supported by 14 percent in the poll by the Forsa institute. That would give them a razor-thin majority in parliament and allow Merkel to break with her partners of the past four years the left-centre Social Democrats - Germany s other traditional main party. In the Forsa survey they received only 25 percent support from the 2001 people questioned. Despite its predicted status as the third-strongest party both the Christian and Social Democrats have ruled out a coalition with the Left which burst onto the political spectrum in 2005 after ex-Communists banded together with defectors from the Social Democrats disenchanted by their party s swing to the centre. Germans each have two votes in the parliamentary election - one for a directly elected representative and the other for a party. Half of the seats in the lower house of parliament go to the directly elected lawmakers one for each of the 299 constituencies. They are elected by a simple majority. The other 299 seats are allocated to candidates elected via party lists. The party vote is critical because it determines the percentage of seats each party wins in the lower house. The Social Democrats in power since 1998 are facing historical lows. Many analysts have argued they could benefit from a period in opposition that would let them regroup. Both Merkel and her main challenger Frank-Walter Steinmeier of the Social Democrats ignored the threats in their parties final rallies on Saturday and instead focused on the key domestic issues of jobs and economic recovery. Two videos surfaced Friday - one by al-Qaida and another by the Taliban - threatening retaliation for Germany s military presence in Afghanistan. The Taliban video showed top German landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and Munich s world-renowned Oktoberfest beer festival. President Horst Koehler urged Germans go to the polls recalling that the right to vote was not something to take for granted. sibility for the use o- published: 04 Nov 2013

Germany's young SPD Social Democrats reject Merkel coalition
Leaders of Germany's centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) have suffered a blow after the party's youth section voted "no" to plans for a "grand coalition" with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives. The country's future government depends on the unprecedented say of the SPD grassroots. Many youth members fear the party would simply be gobbled up in a coalition by the more right wing Christian Democrats (CDU). "I want to send a warning to my party. Rejecting the coalition agreement Johanna will not mean more justice in Germany, rejecting it will mean less social justice for millions of people," SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel, told the "Jusos" -- the young Social Democrats -- at their Congress in Nuremberg.- published: 08 Dec 2013

European centre left launches election drive and attacks austerity
Centre-left parties have named German Social Democrat Martin Schulz as their candidate for next head of the European Commission. As they did so, they called for changes to the austerity policies brought in to tackle the eurozone crisis. The Party of European Socialists -- which groups the main centre-left parties -- said the policies had led to unemployment and hardship. "During the next five years, for every action we take in the EU we must be able to simply answer the question: how will this help to create jobs?" said Schulz. "What more can we do to give a real chance for our children?" Italy's new prime minister Matteo Renzi also appeared at the conference in Rome -- and repeated a pledge to keep finances under control, allowing it to push for new growth-orientated policies. He also said that he wanted to ensure that the European Union is "a real social union, as much as it is an economical union." "Economic freedom cannot outweigh social rights," he said. Speaking from Rome, euronews correspondent Sandor Zsíros said: "At the end of his speech, Martin Schulz said that he's confident that the European Socialists will win the elections in May. The latest polls show that the left has a small lead over the European People's Party."- published: 02 Mar 2014
