Major Tony Hibbert feels particularly strongly that he would like to see the British Army do this to right the wrongs done to the Polish soldiers generally and Sosabowski specifically in 1944. The brave Polish paratroopers were used as scapegoats toward the end of the war because Poland was sold out to Stalin by Winston Churchill. There is also the related mysterious death in Gibraltar of General Sikorski. Many people believe Sikorski was assassinated to avoid embarassment at the up-and-coming Tehran conference of the 'big three' Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. Sosabowski versus Browning and Montgomery: It has taken 60 years to restore the honour of this great Polish hero and his Brigade, 60 years too long. On a memorial near Arnhem: "To the People of Gelderland; 50 years ago British and Polish Airborne soldiers fought here against overwhelming odds to open the way into Germany and bring the war to an early end.
