Symphonic Impression: "In the Fen Country" - Ralph Vaughan Williams (Albion Records)
Written in 1907, "In the Fen Country" was Vaughan Williams' first major work for orchestra. As the name suggests, it is a musical evocation of the large flat region of Eastern England known as the Fens, an area which includes parts of Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The city of Cambridge stands on the southern edge of the Fens; twenty miles north is the small city of Ely whose cathedral features prominently in this film.

Ralph Vaughan-Williams - In the Fen Country (1/2)
Ralph Vaughan-Williams (1872-1958) In the Fen Country, for orchestra In the Fen Country is an orchestral tone poem written by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Vaughan Williams had completed the first version of the work in April 1904. He subsequently revised the work in 1905 and 1907. It is Vaughan Williams' earliest composition not to be withdrawn. Whilst various 1920 reports indicated that the score was lost at that time, one saying "perhaps irretrievably" and another saying "temporarily lost", Alain Frogley has commented in 1991 that the manuscript score is in the British Library. Described by Vaughan Williams as a "symphonic impression", it received its premiere under the conductor Thomas Beecham in 1909. The piece is meant to evoke feelings of traversing East Anglia's often bleak Fen landscape, illustrated by the solo opening melody, the wide open spaces then portrayed by the sweeping string orchestral textures. ~Wikipedia

The Great Fen from 'Memories from the Fen' film
Working with a professional film-maker, students from Abbey College in Ramsey have interviewed, filmed and re-enacted local people's memories of growing up in the Fen. From memories of wartime, to farming on hands and knees, the full 37 mins film includes dramatisations, and archive photos and film, including footage of the large copper butterfly, now extinct in the UK. The DVD is available for a suggested donation of £5, with all proceeds to the Wildlife Trust. Visit www.greatfen.org.uk. Pipeline Through the Fens (1968) - extract
This striking documentary focuses on the construction of the hidden conduit for North Sea gas lurking under the picturesque Norfolk fenland. 'Pipeline Through the Fens' was filmed during the 12 weeks in 1968 it took to lay 43 miles of pipeline under the county. The film (made on behalf of The Gas Council) focuses on the considerable engineering achievement involved in linking sections of pipe (each one 40 feet long, 36 inches wide and weighing 4.5 tons) and burying them 9ft below the surface. The workers scrupulous care is understandable - you really wouldn't want to be trying to find a leak later on! Gabriel Medina // Hawaiian Short Film
This is the result of a few encounters with Gabriel on the North Shore season of 2011.
We just wonder what we'd see if someone filmed him full time throughout the year...

FENS Forum | Interview with Dr. Barry Dickson - The Neurobiology of Drosophila Mating Behaviours
Dr. Barry Dickson (Vienna, Austria) will be giving a plenary lecture "Wired For Sex: The Neurobiology of Drosophila Mating Behaviours" at the FENS Forum of Neuroscience in Barcelona. Behaviour emerges from brain circuits that select specific motor actions according to external sensory information, internal physiological states, acquired knowledge, and desired goals. These neural circuits are shaped to select adaptive motor responses through repeated trial-and-error interactions with the environment - of the species over the course of evolution and of the individual during its own lifetime. The mating behaviours of Drosophila are an ideal model system to explore the operating principles of such circuits, as well as the genetic programs that have evolved to build these circuits and endow them with the plasticity needed to fine-tune behaviour according to individual experience. The FENS Forum of Neuroscience is the largest international neuroscience meeting in Europe, involving all neuroscience societies members of FENS, and held every two years on even years. FENS Featured Regional Meetings are national or regional scientific meetings organized by member societies, alone or in partnership between them, which receive FENS support and label. They are organized every two years, on odd years.
