India and Pakistan mark 65 years' independence
The republics of India and Pakistan were created in 1947 when the British Raj pulled out of the subcontinent. In what became the largest known population transfer in history, India was split along religious lines and an estimated 14 million Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs migrated across the newly formed borders. Both countries looked to the future with hopes that political stability and economic prosperity would lead to a stronger and more positive relationship. As they prepare to mark the 65th anniversary of their independence, Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman looks at how the two nations have fared.

Poison on the Platter - A documentary film
Mahesh Bhatt says: Promotion of Genetically Modified Food is an Act of Bio-terrorism!!
Renowned filmmaker and social activist Mahesh Bhatt today launched a scathing attack on biotech multinational companies and their nexus with regulatory bodies for unleashing what he describes as ‘bio-terrorism’ in the country. Speaking at a function organized to launch his new film, ‘Poison on the Platter‘, directed by Ajay Kanchan, Bhatt said, “in their mad rush to capture the multi-billion dollar Indian agricultural and food industry, the biotech MNCs are bulldozing warnings by scientists about the adverse impact of GM foods on health and environment, and hurtling the mankind toward a disaster, which will be far more destructive than anything the world has seen so far, simply because it will affect every single person living on this planet”.
Bhatt’s film makes a mockery of Government of India’s claim of not allowing import of any GM foods in the country as it conclusively demonstrates that supermarkets in India are flooded with harmful food stuff and biotech MNCs are cashing on the ignorance of unsuspecting consumers in India. “Indians are unfortunately kept in dark, and the corporations are hatching strategies to cash in on their ignorance. Poison on the Platter is, therefore, an attempt to generate awareness among consumers and kick start an informed debate on the issue”, said Bhatt.
Trials of GM foods on lab animals across the world have repeatedly shown that they cause bleeding stomachs, and adversely affect brain, lungs, liver, kidney, pancreas and intestine. They have been even linked to higher offspring mortality and causing infertility.
“Are we ready to eat a food that has the potential to stunt our growth, impair our immune system and adversely affect all our vital organs”, asks Ajay Kanchan, director of the documentary, adding that “It’s shocking that instead of protecting the interests of farmers and consumers, regulatory bodies in India are pandering to the greed of biotech MNCs like Monsanto, whose track record is littered with lies, deceptions and notorious ability to corrupt the regulatory bodies all over the world”.
“I can say with absolute confidence that there is irrefutable and overwhelming evidence that genetically engineered foods are harmful and that they are not being evaluated properly by the governments of India, United States, the European Union, or anywhere in the world.” Said Jeffrey M. Smith, Founder Director, Institute of Responsible Technology and author of two widely respected books on health impact of GM foods – Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette, adding that “this is one of the most dangerous technologies ever introduced on earth, and it’s being deployed in our food supply. It’s madness, what we need is a political willingness to say no more”.
Noted food policy analyst Devinder Sharma said, “India is fast becoming the world’s biggest dustbin for this risky and unwanted technology. We are being told that these crops are essential for feeding the growing population, but there is not even one GM crop that produces higher yields. In fact, many of the GM crops produce less than the existing crops. And yet, as many as 56 foods crops are being genetically modified in India.” In spite of a number of independent scientific studies pointing out the potentially damaging impacts of Bt crops, Government of India is about to approve the first food crop, Bt brinjal. “So far we were told that by proper washing the veggies you could get rid of the harmful pesticides residues. That may not hold true anymore, because with genetic modification, the toxins will be right inside the vegetables”, Sharma added.
In India, the only commercially cultivated GM crop Bt Cotton, has so far proved extremely harmful for human beings and animals. Hundreds of farmers working in Bt Cotton fields developed skin allergies that were not known before, while thousands of cattle, sheep and goats that went for grazing there died in no time. “What we need is a moratorium on release of any GM crop and sale of any GM seed for at least next 5 to 7 years, till their safety is not assured through stringent and impartial tests, because what’s at stake here is not just our health but our very survival”, said Dr Pushpa M. Bhargava, Founder Director, Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology and Supreme Court’s nominee in the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC).
Concluding a panel discussion following the screening of the film, Mahesh Bhatt said, “We cannot remain a mute spectator and let the biotech companies fill their coffers by using our bodies as their slaves in India. If the Government and regulatory bodies continue to ignore warnings by scientists and release any GM food crop, I won’t mind spearheading a countrywide campaign on the scale that India has not seen since the days of Independent movemen

Road Back to the Frozen Four (69 minutes)
History
[edit]Partridge and his academy
The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Good morning, brothers and sisters. I am delighted to be with you once again in New York City. We just got back last night from spending a little time with our True Parents. I caught up with them on the London leg of their tour and accompanied them on to Switzerland, before we returned to New York yesterday. Again as I traveled with our True Parents and saw the European members who have long awaited the arrival of our True Parents in their countries, I realized how richly blessed the American members are. To have True Parents at the London event was an amazing experience for all the brothers and sisters in London, and likewise in Geneva, Switzerland, as well.
I always find myself wondering why is it I who has this privilege to accompany our True Parents as their daughter as they travel around the world, to see them up close and personal, getting a rare look into the lives of the extraordinary man and woman we call our True Parents.
My younger brother, the international president, Hyung Jin, asked me to give the introduction to True Mother because she was addressing Parliament at the House of Commons. It was a profound experience because, as we know, the English House of Commons is the mother of all parliaments and has a longstanding tradition. When Mother arrived at the House of Commons, one of the lords, Lord King—that’s his real last name—gave us a private tour of Parliament, talking to us about the history that is more than 600 years long. I felt I was entering the history books. We went into the hall where Queen Elizabeth opens parliament every year, where she prepares herself in the robing room before she enters. We were able to look at all the different portraits that hang in the gallery.
Lord King was talking to our True Mother about what an incredible day this was, that True Mother, a significant woman in her own right, could come to this Eve country of England and grace the parliament with her presence. When she spoke, of course, she delivered our True Father’s address, and she did so in a most loving and profound way. I believe that everybody who heard her speak could not help but be moved.
Later that evening True Father addressed more than 1,600 British people and poured out his heart. The interesting thing about that event was that Father was so excited about giving his address. After reading almost every line of the text he would ad lib and explain what he meant by what he had just read.
We were making our way through his address, but quite slowly. He was well into an hour before he got to Page Three. True Mother and I were thinking it would be close to midnight by the time he finished, but he got so animated and inspired in addressing the British people. He must have felt that the brothers and sisters and guests had embraced him wholeheartedly, because, and I’ve never seen this before, at some point he jumped through all the remaining pages to the end and said, “May God bless you!”
In the beginning we thought it was all a joke and after saying “God bless you” Father would go back to Page Three or Four and run through the remaining text. But he said, “God bless you,” and stood there beaming. We realized it wasn’t a joke; he wasn’t returning to the text; he’d finished for the evening. True Mother joined him on stage, and we had a wonderful picture with the Ambassadors for Peace who presented True Parents with a marvelous gift, and then True Parents took their leave.
I was delighted that even though my eldest son, Preston, and his wife Krista were smack in the middle of their exam schedules, they were able to get away. They caught the last segment of True Parents’ address and were able to greet them. It was three generations together celebrating this event with our brothers and sisters, so it was extremely profound. Preston’s Korean name is Shin Myung, and the Chinese character “myung” is the same as in Father’s name. We call my father the big Myung and Prezzy the little Myung. For Father to light up in seeing his little Myung as they were greeting each other was a beautiful and moving moment for me.
Then True Parents continued on to the next destination, Geneva. We were scheduled for two events there. In the morning Mother was scheduled to address the World Council of Churches. Everything is so sensitive, and this whole question of whether the World Council of Churches is going to include the Unification Church as part of its club is a big question for a lot of people. In the end True Mother’s participation in that event was canceled, so she sent a representative to talk about True Parent’s good work and about why the Council should reconsider its stance in keeping our True Parents out.
If it is truly the World Council of Churches, it should sponsor and support all faiths. It should support all the good work our True Parents have done over the years and allow

Javed: UK Viceroy's Analysis of India
Javed Chaudhry - host of Kal Tak program in Pakistan - describes the assessment of India by the acclaimed Lord Ripon, Governor General and Viceroy of India during 1880-1884. According to Lord Ripon, the fundamental weakness of Indians was lack of unity, and this weakness - despite India's tremendous strengths in resources and manpower compared to Europeans - prevented her from escaping colonialism and poverty. As per Javed, Lord Ripon's advice is fully applicable to modern-day Pakistan; the country suffers from an acute case of disunity and has virtually no chance of progress until it fosters unity among its disparate people.
