The Western Hemisphere
A time-lapse of Planet Earth, created from images produced by the geostationary Electro-L Weather Satellite. The images were obtained beginning on May 14th, and end on May 20th. The images are the largest whole disk images of our planet, each image is 121 megapixels, and the resolution is 1 kilometer per pixel. They are taken every half hour, and have been interpolated (smoothed) to create this video. The images are taken in four different wavelengths of light, three visible, and one infrared. The infrared light is reflected by forests and vegetation, which appear orange in these images. Images Copyright NTs OMZ. US confirms (RFID) high-tech driver's licences
US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff confirmed Thursday that Canadians can use enhanced driver's licences when entering the US by land crossings. Canadian officials had been pressing for an alternative to passports, saying they are expensive. While Washington's decision on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is due soon, Chertoff indicated the new high-tech licences would be approved. 'Next year, we'll be implementing a rule in stages that will require ... either a passport, a passcard, Nexus card or enhanced driver's licence to cross the land border,' he said during a speech to a Washington trade symposium hosted by the US Customs and Border Protection agency. Such licences, which aren't yet available, would contain proof of citizenship. Several provinces, including Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, are keen to develop the required licences. Ontario Transportation Minister Jim Bradley said Chertoff's comments mean the provinces can take the next step in discussions with Ottawa about the new licences. A project using high-tech licences at border points between British Columbia and Washington state is expected to start early next year. Air travellers entering the US already need passports. Recent news from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) about allowing enhanced driver's licences to be used as alternative to passports for US - Canada border crossing, renewed talks around the privacy issues surrounding the use of radio frequency identification (RFID ...

WEST EDMONTON MALL ALBERTA CANADA, LARGEST MALL IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE
From wheelchair nomad diary...2003 CC With a Wendy's chilli lunch in Ponakas, the trip took us some five hours, checking in to the West Edmonton Mall Inn at 5.00 pm. That left us two hours to explore the West Edmonton Mall across the road. This mall boasts of being the biggest in North America and contains the world's largest indoor pool, with Acapulco humid climate, warm waters, sandy beach and large wave machine. There is a gigantic amusement arcade. Watching, Richard exclaimed, “That's way too scary for me, a really steep decline pulling into a ninety degree turn at ninety kilometres an hour, followed by a loop, a larger second loop, and a gigantic third loop where you are pinned by gravity upside down.” There were lots of kids' rides as well. We liked the indoor hockey rink, miniature golf course, and, of course, Bourbon Street with its bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and music halls. There were two cinema complexes boasting fifteen movies, and the Fantasy Hotel, twenty stories high. With two levels, city blocks in length, hundreds of stores sold everything one could possibly want, particularly promoting expensive name brand products such as Wedgewood and Royal Doulton china. We left reluctantly at 7.00 pm but were looking forward to greeting David and Rebecca after a long absence. DON PUGH

Haitians fight poverty with art - 15 Nov 09
As the poorest state in the Western hemisphere, Haiti has been suffering from a lack of basic resources for many years. In the town of Croix Des Bouquets, just outside the capital, 70 per cent of the population is unemployed. But a group of hundreds of artists have created a community of craftsmen - turning oil steel drums into art - in an effort to change that fact. Teresa Bo reports.
