Anders is a name in Scandinavian languages, the equivalent of the Greek Andreas ("manly") and the English Andrew. Anders is the German and Dutch word for different.

In Sweden, Anders has been one of the most common names for many centuries. According to Statistics Sweden, as of December 31, 2002, it ranks 4th among the male names. The great frequency of this name at the point in time (around 1900) when patronymics were converted into family names is the reason why 1 out of every 30 Swedes today are called Andersson.

The name day of Anders in the Scandinavian calendar is November 30, and in the old peasant superstition that day was important for determining what the Christmas weather would be. If it was very cold on November 30, there would be much sleet on Christmas (and vice versa).

In Denmark (but not in Norway or Sweden), Donald Duck's name is Anders And.

The equivalent of Anders in Basque is Ander, which is also a very common name.

Peter Arend Stoffer (born January 6, 1956) is a Canadian politician.

Stoffer is currently a member of the New Democratic Party caucus in the Canadian House of Commons, representing the riding of Sackville—Eastern Shore. He represented Sackville—Musquodoboit Valley—Eastern Shore after the 2000 election, and after the 1997 election, he represented the riding of Sackville—Eastern Shore. (Riding changes are due to redistribution.) Stoffer is a former airline employee and union activist who was also vocal on environmental issues.

Stoffer is the Official Opposition Critic for Veterans' Affairs. He is a former critic for Fisheries and Oceans, Shipbuilding, Seniors, Amateur Sport, Canada Post Corporation, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and National Defence.

Stoffer is a populist and has been an advocate of Third Way policies championed by Tony Blair. He is affiliated with the internal party reform group NDProgress that successfully pushed the NDP to adopt a 'one member one vote' system to choose its leader, and which has called for limits on union influence within the party.

Background and elections[link]

Stoffer was born in Heerlen, Netherlands, where his parents worked in the coal mines. After the mines closed down in 1956, they decided to move to Canada. His father became a mail carrier, and later worked as the head of a center for the disabled.

In 1997, Stoffer won his seat by a mere 39 votes. Subsequently, however, he increased his margin of victory, in the 2004 election, his plurality was over 6,000 votes. In 2006, he took 53 per cent of the vote, the second placed candidate was over 12,000 votes behind. He was the only Nova Scotia NDP Member of Parliament elected in 1997 to have retained his seat, other than McDonough. In the federal election of 2008, Stoffer received 24,290 votes or 61.5 per cent of the total votes cast. He was more than 16,000 votes ahead of the candidate in second place.^[1]

Stoffer lives in Fall River, Nova Scotia with his wife Andrea, his two daughters (Jasmin and Amber) and his dog Angel.

On Parliament Hill[link]

In Ottawa on Parliament Hill, Stoffer has been consistently voted “Most Fun MP to work for” by The Hill Times newspaper, and is known for the “All Party, Party” – a non-partisan fundraiser for various charities.

In 2006 Stoffer withdrew his own private members bill aimed at preserving Canada's neglected heritage lighthouses, in order to support similar legislation, Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act introduced by Conservative Senator Pat Carney.^[2]

Stoffer has been critical of MPs who cross the floor and has repeatedly introduced a private member's bill banning party-hopping by Members of Parliament. His proposal, requiring MPs who leave their party to either resign and contest a by-election or sit as independents, was included in a list of demands issued by NDP leader Jack Layton in October 2005, in exchange for continued NDP support of the Liberal minority government. After David Emerson's controversial decision to cross the floor, he has revived this idea.

In 2010, Maclean's Magazine named him "Most Collegial" in its annual Parliamentarians of the Year awards.^[3] This is the second year in a row that Stoffer has received the award, which is voted on by fellow MPs.^[4]

2003 leadership election[link]

During the 2003 NDP leadership convention, Stoffer was the campaign co-chair to Lorne Nystrom, a former long serving NDP MP from Saskatchewan. Days before the leadership convention, Stoffer let it be known to the media that his second ballot intention was to move to support Manitoba MP Bill Blaikie. While Nystrom was viewed as a long shot to begin with, many attribute Stoffer’s comments as killing any hope Nystrom had of winning over delegates at the convention, as his campaign co-chair was already talking about switching allegiances. At the convention, Toronto city councillor Jack Layton was elected on the first ballot.

Robert J. "Rob" Anders (born April 1, 1972, in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian politician He is a member of the Conservative Party of Canada and has represented the riding of Calgary West since 1997.

Early life[link]

Anders graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Before being elected he worked for the Republican Party on the 1994 senate campaign of Jim Inhofe in Oklahoma as a professional heckler, which earned him the label of "a foreign political saboteur" from CNN.^[1] Before 1997 he had also served as the director of Canadians Against Forced Unionism, an organization related to the National Citizens Coalition.

Parliamentarian[link]

Anders was first elected as the Reform Party MP for Calgary West in 1997, at age 25. The seat had been vacated when the former MP for the riding, Stephen Harper, resigned unexpectedly in 1996. Despite his relative youthfulness, Anders was already a veteran political organizer, and was able to win a hotly-contested nomination in one of the safest Reform ridings in Canada. Along with fellow newly-elected MP's Jason Kenney and Rahim Jaffer and advisor Ezra Levant, Anders was part of an up and coming group of young Reformers which pundits dubbed the "Snack Pack" due to their relative youth.

Anders was a supporter of Stephen Harper's successful 2002 bid for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance, providing significant assistance with the campaign's phone-banking.

Anders was formerly a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. He was removed from that position, partly based on his tendency to fall asleep during meetings.^[2][3] He has been reassigned to the House-Senate Standing Joint Committee on Scrutiny of Regulations. He is also a former member of the Reform Party (1997–2000) and the Canadian Alliance (2000–2003). He is a former Official Opposition Critic for National Defense and former Co-Chair of the Standing Joint Committee on Scrutiny of Regulations.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has indicated his support of Anders, stating that "Rob is a true reformer and a true conservative. He has been a faithful supporter of mine and I am grateful for his work."^[4]

In 2011 Rob Anders began to lobby for the government to stop funding the CBC.^[5]

Controversies[link]

Anders was the sole parliamentarian to vote against making Nelson Mandela an honorary citizen of Canada in 2001, which prevented the act from passing unanimously. He defended his actions by stating that Mandela was a communist and a terrorist, causing widespread criticism.^[6] As a result, during the past two federal elections, Anders has been the target of a mostly unsuccessful non-partisan "Vote Out Rob Anders"^[7] campaign in his riding, but his popular vote percentage has increased every federal election since he was first elected in the 1997 Canadian federal election. Until 2006, his percentage of popular vote progressively increased from 51.79% in 1997 to 58.7% in 2006. His raw numbers in the popular vote dropped in 2004 by less than 2000 votes over his 2000 election but rebounded in 2006 to his highest vote total to date. Voter turnout in his riding for the 2006 election was the highest in Alberta [1] at 69.9%. In 2008, Anders' share of the popular vote declined slightly to 57.4%.

Anders has been a consistent critic of the human rights record of the People's Republic of China. He has described the PRC as "the worst human-rights abuser in the world," and compared the 2008 Beijing Olympics to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He argued that "China is the wrong choice to host the Games... I absolutely 100% think it compares to the Berlin Olympics in 1936." Anders highlights that the fact that Falun Gong practitioners are not allowed to participate in the Olympics is comparable with Adolf Hitler's issue with Jewish participation in the 1936 Berlin Olympics." Anders has also said that no Canadian politician should attend the games, nor should any Canadian athletes be used as "propaganda tools." His comments were criticized by local Chinese trade association as well as fellow Calgary Tory MP Deepak Obhrai who disclaimed Anders "was speaking as an individual and his comments are not reflective of government policy." ^[8]

In 2010, in a card supporting Canadian troops, Anders wrote: "When in doubt, pull the trigger".^[9]

Anders' decision to become involved in the newly formed Wildrose Alliance Party of Alberta has generated controversy, as the Wildrose Alliance Party is hoping to defeat the current ruling Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta. Ron Liepert, Alberta's Minister of Energy, accused Anders of campaigning against him.^[10]

In February 2010, nineteen members of Anders' Calgary West riding association resigned en masse, citing interference from the Conservative Party. The 32 member board had been planning to ask Conservative Party members at the riding's upcoming annual general meeting whether they wanted to hold a nomination contest. The party's national council intervened, saying it had already declared Anders as the candidate for the next federal election, and threatened to take control of the annual general meeting of the constituency association. The resignations brought the total number of board members who had resigned over the course of one year to twenty-four.^[11]

Current activities[link]

In 2003, he voted for a Bloc Québécois proposition which stated that the Québécois form a nation and could withdraw from any federal initiative. He was the only non-Québécois to vote for this proposition.

Community involvement[link]

Anders has devoted his time to a variety of right-wing organizations. Some of these include lobby groups and think tanks such as Focus on the Family, the Canada Family Action Coalition, and to several causes opposing the Government of China's policies regarding Tibet and Falun Gong.
