2/8/2012 - Contenders are really beginning to separate themselves from the rest as we move into the bulk of the NBA season. Mainstays like he San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls aren't surprising anyone by leading their respective divisions, but there are some interesting upstarts showing life from the darker corners of the league.

At 18-7, the Philadelphia 76ers boast one of the top winning percentages in the NBA despite having recently struggled through one of the toughest stretches in the franchises history.

12/23/2011 - The NBA Preseason may have only lasted about a week, but it still provided enough action get fans excited about the start of the season Christmas day. It's hard to find to predict a team's outlook after only playing a pair of games, but it does allow for some takeaways.

Last week's excitement over the Los Angeles Clippers signing of point guard Chris Paul coincided nicely with a dominant performance over the crosstown rival Lakers. Paul and Blake Griffin seemed to have already gelled, making them a dangerous duo to continue to build a franchise around. In addition to the loss, the Lakers' woes continue as star guard Kobe Bryant suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist, making him questionable for an opening day matchup against the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 25. The timing could not have been worse for Bryant, as his wife has filed for divorce just as the season is set to begin.

12/16/2011 - The NBA Preseason is finally underway. It's been a busy week in the NBA as a potential trade of star point guard Chris Paul has hogged the headlines. Paul was originally tentatively traded by the New Orleans Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers, but the move was nullified by league commissioner David Stern after it was contested by several owners. On Dec. 14, the Hornets and the Los Angeles Clippers agreed to trade Paul and two future second round draft choices in exchange for Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and the Minnesota Timberwolves' first round pick in the 2012 entry draft.

After a dicey offseason and lengthy lockout, the NBA finally released an abbreviated regular season schedule on Dec. 6, 2011. Marquee matchups on Christmas day between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers vs. Chicago Bulls had preciously been announced. The NBA has added two additional games on Dec. 25, pitting the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Orlando Magic and the Golden State Warriors against the Los Angeles Clippers.

On November 26, 2011, the NBA and the National Basketball Player Association reached a tentative deal that brought an end to the NBA lockout. The lockout lasted 149 days and resulted in the cancellation of the first six weeks of the regular season. According to the NBA, the tentative deal will bring a 2011-2012 season comprised off 66 games. The season is scheduled to begin on December 25, 2011.
