Baby Sloth Sanctuary In Costa Rica: The Cute Show
As soon as I heard about the Aviarios Del Caribe sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica I knew it would be perfect for the Cute Show. It's the world's only sloth orphanage, home to over a hundred very sleepy urchins whose lives have been saved by legendary sloth whisperer Judy Arroyo. Sloths are fantastically weird animals, the junkies of the jungle who seem to spend their lives either nodding off or scratching and occasionally eating a bean or two before drifting back to what looks like a blissful sleep. The babies are especially helpless and comical and I fell in love with them immediately. So I cut a few choice clips together to show my old colleague VBS UK producer Vida Toombs and Cute Show creator Amy Kellner and posted the video on my Vimeo page. To my surprise the clip went viral and was watched by a million people in a week. Clearly I was not alone in thinking that these animals had super squee powers. So here is my Cute Show about the sloths, the perfect prelude to a sneaky daytime nap. If you fall for these animals like I did then you can join the sanctuary's volunteer programme. Trainee sloth wranglers get to feed the sloths and help exercise and potty train the babies. The sanctuary runs on donations and voluntary help so you can do your bit by helping these vulnerable creatures whose jungle home is being slowly destroyed by pesticides, sold off to US real estate agencies and sliced up by roads and power lines. Equitrekking's Emmy nominated host Darley Newman discovers Pacific Coast beaches and the fertile farmland and lush forests of the San Carlos Valley as we ride Costa Rica. Mixing horseback riding with tree climbing and hot air ballooning, Equitrekking captures the true spirit of adventure in Costa Rica. Riding gaited Paso Fino and Peruvian horses, Darley makes a trek to the famously furious Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. As smoke billows off the flowing lava, Darley and her local Costa Rican guides ride among lava rocks from the 1968 eruption. Next, Equitrekking takes viewers to the beach, taking in Costa Rica's extreme biodiversity, spotting scarlet macaws, crocodiles and iguanas, right alongside the road. Darley lives every horse rider's dream by taking a sunset ride on the beach, before heading back to San Carlos to climb a ten-story tree! Next, Darley enjoys getting in touch with the local culture, by riding in a Cabalgata, a horse festival where hundreds and sometimes tens of thousands of local Costa Ricans open up their farms so that riders can pass through them in a wild trail ride. Darley visits a frog sanctuary to view rare frogs, like the red-eyed tree Frog, and rides horses to a spot where howler monkeys make their home in the trees. Finally, Equitrekking takes viewers to hear the rainforest wake up, flying above it in a hot air balloon at dawn.

Abandoned hayloft now small cube home on Costa Brava estate
David Pou van den Bossche's grandparents and father were born and raised in their 16th century masia (Catalan Villa) on the Costa Brava, but when David came of age, the family had grown too large for the estate. To make room for David's generation, they turned to outbuildings like an abandoned hayloft and horse stable. All of these structures were located on the northern side of the property, which lacked good solar orientation and were highly exposed to the strong winds David's sister inherited the old home of the family horse (Nino), his brother received an upstairs hallway/porch area and David was given the hayloft. Since David and his partner Estel Ortega are architects they volunteered to make these spaces liveable. Nearly windowless and covered in cement, back in 2005, the hayloft was an inhospitable storage shed. The architect couple (partners in life and in work with their firm Cubus Taller d'Arquitectura) wanted to preserve as much as possible so they stripped the structure down to its original stone and left this outer "box" nearly intact (except for one landscape window).
