Tourism on Trial - Egypt
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv In Egypt security problems have collapsed the tourism industry, one of the cornerstones of its economy. As radical Islamists push for strict regulations on tourists, Egypt's population is struggling. "Before the revolution, we used to get ten buses here every hour," a stall keeper sighs. The lack of tourist business has afflicted over 3.5 million people who depend on the traffic for their income. But while they had hoped that the end of the revolution would bring tourists back, there is now another threat looming on the horizon. It may sound bizarre, but the radical Islamist Salafists believe that tourists should only be able to see the pyramids through a veil of wax, arguing "there is a religious decree against keeping them as they are". Unfortunately for the tourist industry, they hold 25% of the seats in the new democratically elected parliament. Under the Salafists public displays of affection would also be banned, as would men and women swimming together. In fact, their decrees would probably force Egypt's most famous beach resort, Sharm El Sheik, to close down. But as tour operator Abdis Salaam says, those in the industry are braced for a fight: "We will stand up against them. We are prepared to create a new revolution if our livelihood is affected." SBS

Lesson 1 What is Tourism? (Hsing Wu University)
I developed these videos as an unconventional approach to teaching Travel and Tourism English to EFL/ESL students. It's also an unconventional approach to tourism itself—hence the name Paradigmaclast. Making the videos look like the work of a faraway company rather than an individual teacher is part of that new paradigm in teaching. After all, people are more willing to listen to an expert than to someone who lives and works among them. As Will Rogers said, "An expert is a man 50 miles from home with a briefcase." I also learned many years ago, people are more likely to learn and remember a lesson if it's unusual or funny. I hope I've succeeded in making these first eight lessons unusual, funny, and useful.

Counting the Cost - The tourism business
This week we are going to take you on holiday on Counting the Cost. Tourism is the biggest service industry in the world and we are right in the middle of peak season. Between May and August - summer in the Northern Hemisphere - some 415 million tourists are expected to travel on their holidays. The top five destinations last year, in terms of number of visitors were Italy with 46 million, Spain with 56,7 million, China with 57,6 million, and the US was second with over 62 million, and at the top of the list is France with 79,5 million visitors. Down the other end of the scale though, the Middle East and North Africa took a massive hit because of the Arab Spring - losing about five million tourists last year. But we are going to focus on Egypt where there are signs of a recovery. The number of tourists jumped 29 per cent between January and May this year compared to the same period a year ago, when the revolution was still dominating the headlines. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland looks at some of the efforts being made to bring tourists back to Egypt. We also look at toursim in the Philippines, and how that ongoing dispute over the South China Sea is keeping Chinese tourists away. And of course London - the Olympics are in town and there is a packet to be made, but why are these people leaving their homes during the Games?

I was asked to go to Basilicata, Italy to participate in a Digital Diary contest for the tourism board to show one of the most untouched parts of Italy... It was a rushed week, and I had to make two videos. I had two days to put this one together, so I apologize about the little knicks here and there, hehe.
It won the Grand Prize at the competition, and I am still in shock about the whole thing. It really was like a dream!

HASTILY MADE CLEVELAND TOURISM VIDEO
twitter.com The Cleveland Tourism Board gave me 14 million dollars about 8 months ago to make a promotional video to bring people to Cleveland. As usual, I waited till the last minute and I ended up having to shoot and edit it in about an hour yesterday afternoon. I probably should have invested more time. mikepolkjr.com

It's You... Vancouver
Tourism Vancouver's new destination film uses multiple platforms to send its message -- and it's unlike any promotional piece of its kind. Incorporating a local band and original song, "It's You... Vancouver" is the world's first professionally produced destination film in music video format. The song is performed by Watasun, a Vancouver-based duo whose music fuses urban beats with traditional folk sounds. One-time buskers on Vancouver's Granville Street, singer/songwriter Adam Bailie and percussionist Reid Hendry now record, produce and sell their own albums, taking inspiration from the city's diversity, vibrancy and unity. Throughout the three-minute video, the duo perform their catchy tune while making appearances in, near or atop of iconic Vancouver attractions, including the Vancouver Convention Centre roof, an Aquabus ferry and snow-covered Grouse Mountain.
